CHOP CHOP HANG ON HAULOVER INLET!

  • A couple hours spent filming at Haulover Inlet on a late December Sunday afternoon. The inlet was choppy and the weather was great, a perfect combination for a novice captain to be lured into the inlet and over their skill set and boat’s capability. But alas, the small boat captains were cautious and the adventurous captains knew how to handle a boat in the chop of the inlet.

    For those who don’t know what they are looking at:
    This is an inlet, where boats come in an out from the bay to the ocean or from the ocean to the bay. This narrow spot squeezes the water into a tighter area pushing the water in faster. As high and low tide begin to come in, the water is squeezed even tighter, causing these big rough waves you see which can destroy your boat if you’re not careful. It may not look that bad, but if you lose control of your boat, the water will push you directly into the rocks or capsize your boat.

    I like to tilt the motors up to raise the bow (so it won’t dip under) and stay on the back of the wave and slowly follow it in.

    • @shingnosis
      @shingnosis Před 5 lety

      Just be careful not to be caught off guard by a following wave, a fast following wave can sometimes sneak in under your transom and lift it. Then your bow will typically cut either way going down the wave and you'll end up swamped from behind or capsized to the side. Raised motors and bow up is good but it's safer for most people to travel with good power a bit faster than the waves, and to stay on the power to keep the bow up.

    what's the correct way to pilot your boat through waves like this? Should you try to match the speed of the swells or something?

    • @SCCreations
      @SCCreations Před 6 lety +1

      If your going with the current, matching speed isn't enough. You must overpower the current to maintain control of the boat. The current / waves coming at you should be taken head on and as slow as you can being carefull not to poke the nose of the boat into the next wave or belly flopping your hull. Stopping is usually not an option. It could be the camera lens / angle, but it seemed some of these boaters were way to close to each other... Includeing the CG.

    Is it always this bad here? Or just when the tides going out?

    • @ZipZapPower
      @ZipZapPower  Před 4 lety +1

      mostly it is calm, about 95% of the time.. only "rough" when outgoing tide meets incoming swell with onshore wind. It can be flat calm during a strong outgoing tide without the swell. The current dissipates about 300 yards straight out, and about 50 yards to either side, so even on a choppy day in the inlet, a small boat can hug the side, and be on calm water in under a minute.

    yer that's pretty mellow .. check out grey mouth or kawhia bar crossings... not sure if there's any clips on u tube but iv seen some kooks there before it gets pretty full on sometimes up to 5 km of navigating barreling waves in a zigzag pattern in good swell . tests ya and some people get scared n try turn the boat around and end up getting barreled hopefully ends up on u tube one day!

    Is it just wavy here at the inlet, and out in the ocean not as bad as what we're seeing here? I'm also guessing inside the intercoastal, not as rough either? Don't make fun of me, I'm a inland lake boater lol

    • @patrickmccrann991
      @patrickmccrann991 Před 5 lety

      The channel causes the water to be squeezed and form into fair sized swells even in calm water. During winter, the swells can get big enough that even larger boats can have trouble exiting the inlet.
