How to make Triangular Edges, Medieval Armor Techniques #7

  • This is a truncated version of the rerebrace video I did earlier in the week as I was asked specifically about triangular edges - some folk hadn't spotted that it was wrapped up in the 'How to make a rerebrace video'. - so in that respect there's nothing new here.
The triangle comes in a couple of different forms, the techniques used here will help you with the different types made through the ages.
Enjoy, and as usual, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask below and I will do what I can to help.

Thanks very much, not been much armouring the last couple of weeks due to illness and a blacksmithing job, but back to it next week hopefully.

Will do my best, after completing the arm harness I will be doing more five minute fix videos on specific subjects and plan to show how I made a portable forge. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm really enjoying your videos, keep making them! They're a great source of knowledge for somebody like me who makes armor as a hobby and doesn't have time for a lot of experimentation.

My pleasure mate, feel free to make some suggestions on anything you'd like to see and I will happily add them to the list and see what I can do in the future.

I'm very interested in how the armor works. For example I know how Milanese gauntlets with separate cuff and metacarpal plate are constructed, but I have no idea how much they should move in the wrist. And therefore I can't tell if the ones I've made work correctly or not. Same goes for large pauldrons and some other pieces.
Another possible example is the way a specific piece transforms blows to the wearer. For example should the gauntlets rest against hands and therefore require some padding to be safe enough by modern standards, or should they rest against weapon grip/shaft, thus requiring no padding at all.

I was talking about these with someone just the other day, they're not as hard to make as you'd imagine, but getting them to fit well is the tough part. I'll add them to the list :)

Lots of 'holy grail' things here. I've been lucky enough to handle a number of original pieces in some museums (something I'd recommend) and the first thing that struck me was just how dainty it all is. I think the expectation of the armour was different and the fighting was a little different to many of the attacks the modern 'sports' fighter is facing. I'm hoping to get a handling session again soon, so will be sure to try and video what I am fortunate enough to get my hands on - I'm hoping greaves and gauntlets for this visit.

Thanks for all your videos. I found them very interesting and informative! What carbon steel would you use if you wanted to harden the metal? Thanks again
