    Hi Rich, great finger exercise.
    I need to work on my left hand and these exercises are brilliant, thank you.
    and as you say, it's easier to understand if you put the exercises on paper on your own instead of just printing out a PDF.

    Hey Rich, it was my comment about the pinky strength I think you’re referring to. Thanks for addressing it in a longer video. These are some great exercises and I can feel them helping already :)
    Personally, I’d like to see more videos about your approach to harmony and expanding on triads/chords on the bass. From what I’ve noticed in your playing, a big part of your style is in your articulation and dynamic expression. It would be great to have some more content about that as well.
    Thanks so much!

    Great as always Rich. This got me playing the diminished in 3 note ladders. Ie 123,234, etc. So starting from A on the E string the third note would be Eb on the A played with the 2nd finger. Then we drop down to C on the E 4th finger still, and then shift up a fret and play the Eb with the first finger. So kind of a spider like pattern using fingers 124. Going down is the opposite but uses fingers 134 instead. Definitely a good strengthening and speed workout.

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  Před 3 lety

      Yes! You've got the right idea. You can take this approach with any exercise by experimenting with different groupings. (5 note ladders is 🔥.)

    The simplicity of your approach is perfect. Combined with your never ending enthusiasm, these lessons are truly wonderful. The way you are moving through the four fingers in the first exercise sharply reminds me of a LH strengthening technique called Caterpillar Crawls that my mentor from Humber College many years back, Mike Farquharson, taught me: essentially, any pattern that might be technically challenging, practice it up and down the fretboard moving (crawling) up and down the neck one fret at a time. And the way you suggested varying the fingerings you can use reminds me of a book I used extensively way back: Left-Hand Gymnastics for Electric Bass by Scott Reed. The only missing element was that melodic/musical thing you referred to here. Thanks again for the ongoing inspiration!!

    Mr Brown, does the thumb behind the middle finger technique make the hand hurt after a while? I know my hand isn’t placed in a natural way when it’s positioned like that. I know a lot of old school teachers swear by this, but it seems so unnatural to me.
    I know I need to get more relaxed to start with, so maybe that counters it?
    Anyway , I want to give you a big THANKS for your tutorials, as they are simple, honest, have no bs, no lame jokes every 10 seconds or flashy shenanigans like much ‘’teachers’’ you see on YT. Stay that way !
    Just your tone advice video made my bass sound 100x better already.
    Have a great day!

    @jackcoots852 Před 3 lety

    Gotta say Rich, these are the most helpful exercises, and I have had other bass lessons. None have come through as clear as your teaching style. It's also great to see that you can flub up once in a while. Now I know you are human. :) Quick question, is it always best to practice with your shoulder strap? If so, what is the purpose?

    • @richbrownbass
      @richbrownbass  Před 3 lety

      Good question, Jack. I always use a shoulder strap, but I think that might be out of habit at this point. The strap can give you more stability, and it can help to set the neck just at the right angle for your playing style. Ultimately, I don't think there are any wrong answers as long as you're as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

      I hear you, Nigel. You can still plant the thumb and use more of the wrist/forearm while playing these exercises. This way the fingers can stay closer together. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.

I have tried doing exercises with only the ring and middle finger but it hurts after a while so I stop and take a break. I suppose it'll get easier with time, that's my hope. On a more positive note, I'm very happy with my right hand and muting techniques. Practice and time methinks.
