Strangely, some of the games which you most associate with the PS1 actually had N64 releases so for todays video lets take a look at the ones I most associate with being ps1 franchise exclusives - let me know yours in the comments!

I actually agree with the reviews calling Ridge Racer 64 one of the (if not the) best racing games on the N64. I poured countless hours into it :D the handling is sublime once it clicks and the races were genuinely intense.
It was interesting that although Sony owned Psygnosis, they were kinda still independent so still just doing their own thing. Apparently Sony nearly sold them due to this, but ultimately decided against it.

Micro Machines 64 Turbo is absolutely amazing. There’s an 8 player mode on it - one person uses the c buttons, the other uses the d-pad and the vehicles are on autopilot. It was such a disaster and an absolute mess but we were crying with laughter.
Another game that blew me away - Resi Evil 2. How Angel Studios were able to put it all onto one cartridge without much compromise is incredible.

Franchises I always wanted during the N64 era
    1. Street Fighter/Capcom Vs series - - Never understood with a franchise being sprite based never made it onto the console.
    2. Darkstalkers - Same as above.
    3. Dino Crisis - With the N64 version of RE2 somehow existing would have loved to have seen this on the console.
    4. Dark Forces/Jedi Knight II - Cheating here but with the N64 being home of many Star Wars games, I would have loved to see the adventures of Kyle Katarn adapted for the console.
    5. Klonoa franchise - I feel this guy would have felt more at home on the console of platformers.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN Před 2 lety

The N64 use of the cartridge format may had play a role in some of those games not receiving the N64 treatment. For one the controller is weirdly shape which makes playing fighting games very treacherous to control. Dino Crisis came out close to the end of the N64 lifespan so Capcom didn't had much time to port it to that instead opting for the better Dreamcast platform. My other guess is that Nintendo probably don't want to see too many 2D games on N64 instead encouraging third party to bring 3D games for that system.

I think it would have been great to see ports of some japanese 3D fighting games for the Playstation, like Bloody Roar, Streey Fighter EX, Rival Schools or Dead or Alive. I know the N64 was hard to work for some of the genres japanese devs like to work with, like visual novels, jrpg's, shoot em ups or 2D fighting games, that being the reason why it got so little support from that country, but I don't see any issue for it to run any of those 3D fighters, in fact in the west the managed to bring stuff like Mace or MK4 just fine, so it's even more puzzling.

The Playstation version had a completely different feel to it. I would have been curious to see if an N64 version would have had a different feel as well.

Its because NFS High stakes on the PSX used a different but much superior engine than its pc counterpart. The Aspect Ratio and the Car models on the PC version were kinda messed up.. BTW: EA saw so much potential in the engine of High Stakes PSX, that their used this engine for the Development of the PC Version of NFS Porsche. The PSX port of NFS Porsche on other Hand was developed by Eden Games and used the V-Rally 2 engine. Thats the reason with it kinda looks and feels like a reskin of V-Rally 2...

Honestly I wonder if Beetle Adventure Racing was "NFS 64" all along. If we ignore the wackiest features on tracks, it's very reminiscent to the first few NFS games. I also remember a video showing the debug menu of the game (I don't remember if it was a proto or the retail version), and it had the Need for Speed name on it. Wouldn't be surprised if they added the Volkswagen vehicles in middle of development.

I got Megaman 64 very later in the Gamecube era.
It was my first Megaman game, I alreally knew about the super fighting robot due to the old Megaman animated series and Battle Network came around the time I beat it.
I have lots of memories and enjoyed the game. Also the fact that you can play with the d-pad was a blessing since I remembered that the very few controllers I had, all of the joysticks were useless.

Can so relate to the sentiment of actual racing over combat in an arcade racer. Always preferred that style whenever the games gave us the option to switch off or weaken the combat and concentrate on mastering the courses instead. Extreme-G comes to mind, not sure if Wipeout had that option...
Also, I miss the times when PC games and console titles were so vastly different in style, the golden age of console gaming. Now they are basically all the same with a few exclusives and it boils down to which system you already own and where a game is on sale.

Playcontrol on Wipeout 64 wipes the floor to any other Wipeout -game on any system.
Shame it didn't quite push the system visually, as it used engine from PSone -game.
Ridge Racer Type 4 is the best game on PlayStation. It is one of the few games that have N64 -quality gameplay. While RR64 is faster to race, type 4 has better, wider tracks. I love everything on that game (type 4), even menus & career mode presentation.
(N64 - version might use the same engine as type 4, as it lacks N64 style effects like lens flares, while having that same motion blur on replays)
Both, Wipeout 64 & Ridge Racer 64 had (ofcourse) more vehicles on screen at once than on PSone, but that is not necessary way to make a better gaming experience.
Destruction Derby -games are mess on Playstation. Pop-up, screen tearing, distortion, - you name it. Those games are just not for me. I don't even care N64-version, that is technically far superior. So in theory, N64 -version might actually be underrated, but i don't care.
I also don't care that Nightmare Creatures 2 on N64 that was not released in Europe. I would much rather had O.D.T, but Sony declined simultaneous PSone/N64 release of the finished game from Psygnosis.
For some reason i liked a lot that earlier Strike -game on SNES, but isometric games felt, well, somewhat old on N64. More like GBA stuff, in my opinion.
It was surprice that Resident Evil 2 and Micro Machines 64 were released on N64, though.
But what the hell happened to Mini Racers, that i would much rather had...

By the time Wipeout 64 dropped, Psygnosis got bought out by Sony, thus resulting in later installments being exclusive to PlayStation consoles onward. Around that time, I've heard about Wipeout 3 on the PS1. Wipeout 64 was definitely a solid game nonetheless, and the graphics were nice to me.
I disagree with you on RR64. It was definitely a solid gaming experience to me. The graphics on that one looked like something on the Dreamcast. But the engine noise of some of the cars sounded like 18-wheelers or a city transit bus. A few of them sounded like actual V-8 engines of a car. I still, for the life of me, can't beat the Ridge Racer Extreme Extra track. Reiko Nagase from RR Type 4 is basically featured on there for in-game advertising via menus. But RR Type 4 is my favorite in the franchise. I also loved RR3D on the 3DS and RRV on PS2. I can also say that R: Racing Evolution on 6th gen consoles would be a good addition to the Ridge Racer franchise even though they used licensed cars.
Nightmare Creatures definitely gives me nightmares, which in all honesty, I played the game in the dark.

It was a more realistic skateboarding game than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater & was developed by Z-AXIS & Rockstar Games... you know, the same Rockstar Games behind Body Harvest, Space Station Silicon Valley & of course Grand Theft Auto... In Thrasher there is a time limit & if you go past 0 a cop, homeless dude, or even an angry dog will chase your punk-ass with a weapon & the camera goes to a 1st person view from the chaser's perspective. Although the soundtrack would have had to been compressed & it was rap music [which I can't stand AT ALL], it would have been interesting to see how Rockstar would have pulled all of this off on a N64 cartridge. the controls would have had to be re-worked because Thrasher required the 4 shoulder buttons to perform spins & more advanced grind, flip, grab & manual tricks. It might have worked, it might not have, who knows? but I would have LOVED a Thrasher 64 & in fact, a Game Boy Color port was planned but eventually cancelled.

I thought the main reason why the PS1 had better textures was just that PS1 games came in CD, while N64's cartridges didn't have much space in comparison to a CD, so less space available: lower resolution textures.
