I love how Shen didn't kill the Soothsayer when he had no use for her anymore instead letting her go, shows that he did still have some tie to his humanity, even if he was far too gone to stop his plan, Shen has to be the best Villain in the trilogy for his complexity.

Just some small things I adore about this film
In the first film Po’s Dad, Mr. Ping, mentioned how he gave up on selling tofu since it was a silly dream. Ever since Po achieved his dream of being a kung fu Master, Ping is now also selling tofu!
The actual fight choreography is incredible and the little callback to Po’s rapid kick attack in his dream sequence in the first movie now a reality that he pulls off against the wolves at the musician’s village
The Furious Five respect Po as an equal and friend now which shows their development
Shen wasn’t even killed directly by Po. His downfall was his own making, him cutting the ropes on the ship before getting crushed. When was said to be defeated by a warrior of black and white, and Shen is uniquely a black and white peacock. Some say Shen did it on purpose but we can all agree Shen looking up and accepting his fate was beautiful in a scary way.
How the wolves refuse to attack their own because they’re a pack
One of the pots on Shen’s conveyor belt had Tai Lung’s face smashed into it from the first movie
The dolly zoom right here 18:42
So many details in this movie that make it my favourite in the trilogy, but they’re all good!

An even smaller detail with Shen's death: Shen is not exactly a peacock of black and white, but of black, white and red (the red sun like symbols). And by being the one to bring about his own death he gets some peace, because he defies his foretold fate at least to some degree.

What stood out for me was Shen telling Po "Your parents didn't love you." when earlier Shen stated that his parents hated him.
The projection; Shen threw at Po the worst weapon he knew: not being loved by one's parents. Shen reacts to this pain by hating the world. Po reacts to this pain by running away. Until the soothsayer shows Po the path out of it: inner peace.
Nice reaction. Great analysis at the end.

Po and Tigress’s relationship in this movie absolutely wrecks me. The two hugs, the way she reaches for him when he’s hit by the canon, her grief and guilt, the way she says his name when he turns up alive, and how she pushes him out of the way the next time he’s in the line of fire. All their little conversations. I ship it, but most of all I just adore their friendship and how soft it is. Po is clearly the only person Tigress feels comfortable being soft around.
Anyway, yes, this is by far my favourite of the series, followed by the first one. I only ever watched the third movie once, and remember it being so-so. I should give it another go now and see how I feel about it before you post your reaction!

Seeing Po achieve his dream made him go for his too!
Also as I’ve had to edit anyways have this other fun fact: the line where Tigress says “your father the goose, that must have been quite a shock” about him not being Po’s dad made Angelina Jolie laugh so hard she had to step away from filming for a few minutes to calm down.

Aside from Po and Tigress, Shen and the Soothsayer are my favorite relationship in this film. There wasn't a place to bring it up in the movie itself, but it's confirmed that the Soothsayer was Shen's nanny when he was younger and this is reflected in how they interact with each other.
Despite the fact that she spends most of her screentime pushing his buttons, Shen never once attempts to hurt the Soothsayer or even actively threaten her, and once her "purpose" is served he sets her free. Despite everything Shen has done, the Soothsayer genuinely cares about him and wants him to happy. Shen has the potential path for love and redemption right in front of him, but he's clinging so stubbornly to this destructive spiral of anger that he won't take it.
Kung Fu Panda 2 is definitely my favorite of the trilogy, and Shen being such a great villain and tragically interesting character is a huge part of that

Also the Soothsayer was Shen's nanny, as his parents didnt have much time for him when he was younger, also cuz he was healthwise weakened (due to his genes, assumign cuz he is a white peacock, a rare kind which is also said to not find a mate due to the lack of colours, also white being a colour of death in china doesnt help). He did try to proof to his parents that they can be proud of him but.. it ultimately worked against him. So tragic and forced down his path with what happened.

it was less Shen giving up in the end and more him finally accepting his fate as the cannon fell to crush him
the whole time, Shen had been fighting to prevent the fate that was predicted to him and again and again his actions to prevent it only solidified what would happen; it was him attacking the panda villages that led to Po living near the Jade Palace in the first place

Also, when Po tells Tigress she's so hardcore she doesn't feel anything, she momentarily gets distracted. Is she having that realization that she really ISN'T at all as clear about what she's feeling as she always thought she was? Is she suddenly understanding she is not nearly as obvious as she thinks she is?
It foreshadows the later scene where she hugs Po. She's making it clear, obvious, she wants him to stay there because she cares about him. Because she understood then that she seemed cold and aloof and wanted no misunderstanding on the matter.

nice detail is that the one eyed wolf lost his other eye to Po's dad when he hit him with the hammer.
also, "defeated by a warrior of black and white" yeah sure, Po. but also... Shen himself is mostly black and white (+ a slight bit of red). His own cockiness and ego caused his entire future to be the way it was. And in the end, he died because he cut down his destroyed cannon. And if you pay REALLY close attention, it seems likely that Shen was cutting the ropes intentionally. His entire motivation, was breaking his destiny, so him sacrificing himself was him trying to make his own destiny. Little did he know that he still followed the exact path that the soothsayer foretold. Even the little trolling she did: "I see pain. And anger. Followed by denial". The pain: The conversation between shen and soothsayer, where shen realized that he was wrong, but now too far gone to step back; internal, emotional pain. The anger: Po appearing right before shen could set sail. Angry that he had to fight him again and anger for his henchman not listening to him. and lastly, the denial: denying that Po found inner piece ("I scarred you for life") and denial about his loss, going on untill he caused his own death. From the very beginning, the future he was trying to avoid, was the one future he created. Everything he did to create his own destiny and diverge from the one foretold by soothsayer, only solidified the foretold destiny even further. And remember what Oogway said last movie: "One often meets his destiny on the way he takes to avoid it".
Also. as a 21 year olf guy... "I am your son" makes me tear up EVERY time. Idunno why, but this one scene just always hits the right snare for me.
Also, movie 1 was about the build, strengthening and becoming one with The Body. All about Po, Tigress and Shifu accepting that Po himself was not the physical type of general kung fu masters. He didn't fit the standard of kung fu warriors and wasn't what anyone was expecting for THE dragon warrior. The first movie was also about Shifu mostly. Despite Po being the protagonist; the main conflict was between Shifu and Tai Lung, which just happend to have Po as mediator for the conflict. It was about Shifu accepting he cannot controll everything and accepting his past. This movie also heavily focussed on the now. "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. that is why it is called the present"
Then the second movie comes around and it's all about coming to terms with The Mind. Po needing to accept his past and getting inner peace. It's all about Po, which is why Shifu takes a step backwards in relevancy to this movie. And unlike the first movie, the main villain of this movie was directly connected to Po. This one delves more into the past; the past of Po, the past of Shen and even dips it's toes in the past of The Furious Five.
And I really like how the third movie follows this trend to complete the first trifecta: The Body, The Mind and The Soul. And even with the second pattern, it follows through. We had a main conflict based on Shifu with Po as mediator, followed by a main conflict based on Po. The third has a main conflict based on yet another character (connected to Po), where Po again acts as a mediator.
And the last pattern once again followed through; The Present, The Past... leaving only The Future which, while harder to understand, is key to the main conflict/story of the third.
It's very clear they wanted to tell a story in 3 parts and stuck to these 3 key elements. They clearly planned it all out and stuck to their guns, which I love. I genuinly concider Kung Fu Panda to be a perfect trilogy and my favourite movie series of all time.

Something I noticed, a lot of animated movies like to undercut a serious moment with a joke, while Kung Fu Panda, and especially the second one, undercuts jokes with serious moments.
shown first in the beginning with Master Shifu when he was talking about how awful Po being selected as the Dragon Warrior was, then saying that the problem was within his own mind, rather than actually with Po

Shen is a really well written character in my eyes, they gave him a backstory that some can identify with, yet you can see the monster he is, in a way he is a parallel to our hero (kind of like Grimmel the Grisly), he wants inner peace but cannot obtain it, letting his hate and bitterness seethe, he's the antithesis of Po yet Po doesn't hate him, in fact he tries to help him, Po by achieving inner peace has to let go of Shens deeds yet Shen can't even let go of his own destiny (like Tai Lung), his parent still loved him yet he forgot that "My parents never loved me.." and he tries to reflect his own insecurities on Po since he uses Po's parental need in a sense, Shen is not a fully sympathetic villain but he has so much character, the best I can compare him is to Kai Chisaki or Overhaul.

  • @LooDoesStuff
    @LooDoesStuff Před 2 lety +16

The soothsayer was confirmed in an old now deactivated website for the movie to be Shen’s old babysitter, and that’s why he doesn’t kill her and instead sends her away, he can’t find it in himself.
Another fun fact- the scene of Po trying to meditate with water droplets falling on his head is a reference to chinese water torture, considered one of the worst tortures in the world, where a person goes crazy after hours or days of being tied down with drops of water falling on top of their heads in an unpredictable irregular frequence
The cinematography, score and transitions during the scene that Po finds out about his past is amazing and still gives me chills until this day.
There’s symbolism within the fact that Shen is an albino peacock, as white is the color of death in traditional chinese culture. While Shen is always represented by white and red, you’ll notice that Po is always represented by yellow. That is especially evident during the montage scene of Po and the five going to Gongman City and Shen training (which is a super cool scene visually with the cell shading!)
I also love the use of 2D animation in some scenes, both to represent dreams and Po’s foggy memories, and then the switch to 3D when he finally remembers the moment he last saw his mother with clarity, giving the viewers this jarring effect of remembering that this was real and actually happened.
The animators also said that animating Shen fighting was like animating 7 different characters due to his complexity! I absolutely adore his style and how he has feather shaped blades under his real feathers and uses his peacock tail as a shield and distraction
It’s also funny that Shen chose wolves as his henchmen, as they’re very family-oriented animals. And that did end up backfiring, as they stopped obeying to him as soon as they realized that they would be killing their own as well.
When Shen tells Po that his parents never loved him, that was 100% him projecting his own feelings on to Po trying to cause him pain. It’s what he believed about his own parents. All he yearned for was to somehow prove that they were wrong about him and about banishing him by conquering more than they ever could. It’s how the Soothsayer says, the cup he chooses to fill has no bottom and nothing will ever be enough for him, none of this will ever fix the deep wounds he has and the feelings of inadequacy and rejection he has harbored. The scene where he talks about playing on his father’s throne when he was little and dreaming of one day sitting on it, only for them to make a dry cut to it getting thrown out the window like trash sent chills down my spine. He ends up destroying the entire palace and the only living memory of his parents and their legacy in the name of his quest of pure insanity.
During this whole movie Po learns to move on from his past, that he chooses and defines who he is, so Shen is the perfect villain as someone who could never move on and that was his ultimate downfall. That is exemplified in an even more literal manner when during their last fight Shen is cutting the ropes that cause his machine to fall on top of him and he just closes his eyes and accepts his own end. He’s one of my favorite villains in all of media and such a good written character.
I also love Po and Tigress’s relationship in this movie. How she was about to open up about her own painful past to him during the boat scene but got interrupted
In any way, this movie is an absolute masterpiece and I could talk about it for hours.

23:15 The wolves used to be guards at the palace lord Shen and his familly lived in. Everyone would be disrespectful and make fun of them, except lord Shen who was really respectful towards them. He basically grew up with them and since he was the only one in the palace who seemed to actually care and show some respect, they swore their loyalty to him. Lord Shen has a pretty dark and emotional backstory, sadly it was never mentioned in the movies because "its for kids".

There is a TV series about Kung Fu Panda (I think it's called Legends of Awesome) which in some episodes explores a little more into the backstory of the characters.
I understand that being for kids they didn't want to extend the length of these movies with side plots, but I wished they had explored in the movies at least into the backstory of Tigress, and maybe a little more of Shifu.

They just let him turn evil.

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 Před rokem +9

There is way more to this. Did you know that the soothsayer actually was his nanny? Cuz Shen's parents actually were unable to help him due to Shen's genetic issue of being an albino and also white peacocks are known for being unable to find a mate/express love due to their lack of colours. What also doesnt help is that white in china is the colour of death so they may have feared him before they actually feared him before his exilation.
Basically Shen had very little chances to find love, and the one time he wanted to proof himself for his parents actually made him believe they hated him.

Each movie represents a part of kung fu. The body in first movie. The mind in this movie. And the third movie, the soul. I also like how it delves in this movie into how gunpowder and weapons like guns and canons eventually almost wiped out kung fu. I also like how each movie kinda delves into different aspects of Po. Coming to accept himself in the first movie, the topic of adoption in this movie, and the third...finding balance with your adopted and real families.

I think shens cannons are symbolism for his hate, he fought, trained and bled with hatred (and what he saw as his parent betraying him by banishing him) and in the end, thats what destroyed him. He fired with red, and po turned it to gold after finding inner peace, I think this movie more. It's bold, powerful and beautiful in all ways. The one thing/detail I like about Kung Fu panda is that they kept the animals... Animals a bit. Like mannerisms. For example, the soothsayer being a goat eating shen's robe as a goat would actually eat clothing. Tigress growls, viper's hisses, etc. Even if you look at the population of more pigs, rabbits, and ducks as they tend to reproduce a lot of kids. It's a nice balance between bipedal/humanoid animals and normal animals...

23:19 - My headcanon is that One-Eyed Wolf used to be the alpha of his pack. Shen challenged him for leadership, took his 👁️, defeated him, and became the new alpha. Shen keeps him around (as a beta), because he knows the 🐺 es are more likely to take their orders from another 🐺, then from someone they instinctually feel is their inferior. He then proceeded to challenge the leaders of the other packs (at LEAST 4, judging by how many 🐺 es their are), but killed his opponent in those matches. Because, if he had a bunch of former alphas working underneath him, they might have eventually united to overthrow him. And then the infighting would've begun for the leadership of this enormous pack.

Actaully in the flash back Po had, you can see his father hitting a wolf with a hammer and for a split second you can see that the wolf that was hit has a bloody eye, you can also see him chasing after Po and his mother. Also apparently the wolves were gaurds at the palace Shen lived in but they were always disrespected by everyone expect for Shen so they swore their loyalty to him. But I guess Shen stoped caring for them one day.

You could say that Shen was actually the warrior of black and white, not Po. If you think about it, he defeated himself. His reaction to his fortune is what led to him killing the Pandas, therefore changing Po's life, setting him on the path to cross and defeat Shen. He defeated himself in the end.
Edit: And you can see him cutting the ropes holding the cannon up at the end, death was the only way out for him at that point, the only choice he believed there was.
