    Part of the joy of Taskmaster is not just when they do really well, the epic fails are some of the funniest moments. Definitely worth watching a full episode to get a proper idea of how it works.

    There was a US version, but the chemistry between Greg (The titular Taskmaster) and Alex (sidekick/creator of Taskmaster) is so integral.

      There is a Swedish version as well (and probably many others) called "Bäst i test". However, "Greg" is a big lady here, she's okay :) But it's our "Alex's" chemistry with the guests that makes it fun to watch. I actually like it a lot, despite being on state tv (much like BBC). Halv of the tests, as we call them, are more or less copied from the English original, half of them are made up. (The "Talk to a swede" task became "Talk to an Icelandic person", for instance.) The celebrities each complete tasks with no knowledge of how or what each other did until they review the footage together in the studio. The ultimate prize at the ends of the series is a gold bust of Greg. Each week's winner picks up the 'prize tasks'. Each week contestants are asked to bring in something based on a theme (something blue, something scary etc). Rules of Taskmaster - 5 contestants (same ones for a full season) compete in strange and wonderful tasks set by the Taskmaster (Greg). Each task is adjudicated by Alex (who may be dragged in to help). Round 1 - contestants are asked to bring a themed "something" into the studio - these then form that weeks prize. Greg awards points based on originality, back story etc - 5 best, 1 worst. Then follows several filmed tasks. Each task is unknown to the contestant before opening the envelope. The filmed tasks are played back to the studio (first time that the Taskmaster (Greg) has seen the efforts). These are also scored by Greg - some are easy to score - e.g. quickest to do the task, who can send an object furthest in an allotted time etc. - others are more subjective and comedic input, uniqueness etc may add to how Greg scores them. The final round is a live challenge in the studio. Scores are collated for each show - the winner takes away the things collected in Round 1. Scores are also collected throughout the season to produce a season winner. There are many series of Taskmaster so a real goldmine of reactions available - ENJOY - Just got to the end and your question "Why don't we get comedians together in the US like this?" (paraphrased) - US Ego??? Most of the contestants on this show are comedians, comic actors/writers, comic presenters with the occasional DJ, TV presenter etc. (these can be the funniest as you are not expecting them to be as funny as the others).

    One of the amazing things about Taskmaster is that it's almost entirely down to Alex Horne. It's his baby, and he put in a ton of work to make a go of it.
    I think Katherine Ryan's first nursery rhyme, the one about the peanut being crushed by the train, might be a Canadian/border regions kind of thing. A wonderful children's host, Fred Penner (think "Canadian Mr. Rogers" sorta thing. Canada's had a lot of really amazing kids' hosts, mostly through public television) sang it on his show (I think) and on one of his albums (definitely), and everybody knew it. There is always a prize task in every episode. Each contestant brings something in to fit the category (similar to the rest of the tasks), and they score points based on how good their item is. But then, at the end of the episode, the winner gets to take home all of the prizes the other contestants brought in.
    So the prize task is a risk vs reward thing... bring something that will help you win the task, but don't bring something too ridiculous that it will cost you a lot if you don't win. But sometimes the contestants going overboard on the prize task is the biggest source of entertainment. The biggest one in my mind was bring in the most important document, and 2 contestants brought in Guinness world records and one brought in their wedding certificate. Although as far as I can see, the more costly and/or sentimental prizes are generally returned through common courtesy, although there's no guarantee of that and the show certainly doesn't act like they'll get them straight back again.
    Also, the overall season winner gets a trophy of the taskmaster's head
    (TBH I'm not 100% on this info because I mostly just watch CZcams clips rather than the actual show but I think I'm right)

      @denewst01 Před 2 lety +2

      iirc they actually sign a waiver to say that the prizes they're giving up are genuinely being given up, though as a friendly courtesy thing anything really important will generally be given back

    You've hit the motherload here. This is cult viewing, and there are so many episodes to trawl through. Each season/series has the same participants throughout, for about 10 weeks. Each episode has a winner, points are tallied up throughout the series to produce an overall winner. No tasks are ever repeated, each is unique. Points are awarded for each task, 5 to 1, sometimes no points, depending on the Tasmaster's mood. He has final say and awards points accordingly.
    What you've watched here is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope you enjoy it.
