nobody ever explained offset like this guy. i understood it instantly and i’m pretty stupid
Don't worry you are in the vast vast majority
My friend could have used this video 4 months ago before he messed up his car....
@@elixtido1448 i know
@@CS-zn6pp how did he mess up his car?
😂😂😂😂😂
This has been the most valuable information I've received in my day and it's only 10am.
Only Brad could pump so much value and information into a CZcams short. Bravo!
A lot of people completely forget/don't know about the center bore CB measurement. Very important!
Your review of these wheels was a big reason I went with this exact wheel setup in black for my JK. Keep up the amazing content
Right on, glad it was helpful!
I have watched videos that are like way longer and I could not understand offset and backspacing, but the way it's explained here is so simple and exact.
Thank you!
😅 I agree! Finally I get it now
Literally never heard someone discuss this.
My favorite part of this is, I love KMC wheels but I have collected definitely old school KMC's understanding this math is imperative to making your vehicle look amazing
Love this channel and my grandpa loves this channel too. I love nature and exploration and jeeps
Thank you! So glad you are both enjoying the content!
This just demonstrates it perfectly.
I always knew the result but not how it was actually measured. Good info efficiently explained.
Thanks. Always got the backspacing and offset mixed together.
A very neat mixing of metric and imperial units there...
Brad, you just blew the confusion on wheel backspace out the window; Sempe Fi my friend !
Happy to help!
Thanks for explaining it, I do not know what to do with that information, I have a bone stock GX470, I do like those METHOD rims in gold though.
So glad I learned about this when I was going to buy my rims I was going for a little poke out for an aggressive stance and my ride looks sooo good now! =)
Offset in MM. backspace in inches. P metric diameter tire with an inch diameter wheel. It’s a wonder how the wheels go ‘round.
....and percentage for tire aspect ratio!🤣🤣
@mikebythesea2972 what does backspace in inches look like when purchasing a wheel on a site? Can you give me an example?
I don't understand, but I appreciate your attempt to enlighten.
Best explanation of offset I’ve ever seen!
Yep. I put zero offset KMC on my 2021 Tacoma. Westcott lift install next week.
This is the first video I've seen from you in well over a year. Wtf CZcams
Said another way, " if you can't explain a complex topic in a SHORT YT Video then you don't understand it well enough"
Thanks Brad
Literally easiest explanation I’ve seen
Thanks. A video that explains this quickly and to the point. Well done.
Glad it was helpful!
thanks, Chief.
You bet
i thought backspacing was from the hub surface to the mounting surface of the tire (inside of lip)
Simplest explanation by far.
Another thing that can be a problem is sidewall deflection. If you have a tire with too much wall or a wheel that isn’t centered in the wheel well, the deflection can cause rub. A low tire can shred a fender.
Thanks for the great info.
He goes from metric to imperial in a heartbeat.
Must be Canadian.
I do this a lot in my shop. But then, I only live 3 hours from the Canadian border. So, the only conclusion that can be drawn here is that being Canadian is contagious!?
Lots of material wood, drywall and glass sheet in particular comes in imperial and metric sizes ie you'd order sheet size in imperial but the thiçkness is metric 48 x 96 3mm
@@skxj I order a subway 305mm nothing needs to be Imperial and metric in the same sentence.
just saying.
@@MussaKZN I think being Canadian and growing up learning both through school imperial at first then metric from 1977 onward is why it doesn't seem strange to me. I'm glad I know both systems. When I go to subway I order a foot long rather than a 305
Haha but I'll have try that next time.

Can’t forget to include the width of the wheel in addition to these measurements to be able to assess how far the wheel will “stick out” compared to factory or any other wheel you might have.
My first car was a 1978 Monte Carlo. This was in 1991. Back then in the south Florida high school, the G-Body cars were popular, more so as low riders. Ok the back story is there. I had my 1978 MC slammed and I had 15x8 reverse (offset) KMC Spoons on 195/50/15 tires. Back then it was the only way to get the proper stance on a G-Body low rider.
Well said 🤙
You added the thickness of the ruler to your measurement. It's probably only 1.5-2mm but it can make a difference.
Why hasn't anyone thought of doing this before? I look forward to the longer version video.
Here you go, czcams.com/video/2tdNwzfQGN4/video.html
Go further and tell them about proper offsets and steering axis inclination, unless they dont care how hard they chew out tyres taking corners.
Good informative video thanks
The military made a good man great... thank you for your continued service to the off-road community.
La mejor esplicacio q he mirado👍👍
20+ years ago, it common to add 1/2 inch in wheel track
Offset and backspace. They're the same answer to different formulas.
been wondering if I could do 37s on my 392 wheels without rubbing on the sway bar or arms
If you have the right wheels you will clear the sway bar and arms just fine, but without a lift and the correct bump stop you might get into your fenders a bit.
@@TrailRecon might go to 35s and a small lift, I really like the factory 392 wheels
Wheel width is just as important in this calculation; it’s actually used to derive backspacing or compare offsets between wheels
Some mfg makes an adjustable mockup type wheel, so you can play with different offsets, backspacing, etc.
Just had a conversation with a buddy a few months ago
Spot on.
Thanks. Finally
Wondering if upsizing the rim width while keeping the same offset will fill the gap between the wheels and the fenders or if the additional width will go on the suspension side? Thanks!
Thanks bro
Question: with backspacer mounted what is the measurement between the outer rim and the mounting plane? It should be equivalent to negative offset. Correct?
Why are we using two different distance measurement systems for the same application?
Okay so if the wheel has a “0”offset & backspace of 4.4 inch’s what size & width is the wheel you have there?
My other question is, if I was to purchase me a wheel that’s 18x8.5 for the front & 18x9.5 for the rear, but I want my wheel to stick out of my fender close to half way with a 4.5 backspace what wheel size should I get & I always see a lot of +22 +30 15 or 20 without the + how do I know it’s a negative offset if it doesn’t have a - beside it?
Hello,
I have a Subaru Outback.
The factory rim size is 7JX18ET55.
I want to change the rims to 17 inch
Subaru comes with the following sizes
7JX17ET 55 or 48.
I can't find any rims that size
but 8JX17 ET38 or 7.5JX17ET55 and with the 18 inch 8JX18ET30.
My question is can you mount the rims that are not exactly the same size or not.
Thanks
My measuring tape also has tenths of an inch
Great presentation!
My only criticism is that, mm and inches are mixed. 12mm, 38mm, 4.4 inches.
That's probably because he has one of the very few tape measures in the USA with both metric and imperial.
@@nigelskinner8799 I actually have one of those.

@@TrailRecon I know. It’s a pain. Good job, though.
OK, I have a Jeep so which is best to have or does it depend?
So I’m looking at getting a set off wheels for my sl500 20x10 offset 38 but I saw on a wheel chart it’s recommended that with that wheel size I use 23 offset. How can I remedy this ?
This is why i just keep the OEM wheels on my car so that i dont have to worry about this.
This. This is the video.
which is better
back spacing always looks better. Originally when mag wheels were developed that was the look everybody wanted. I think wheels with no back spacing are a waste of money. I don't like that look at all. I think that's a factory look. Also, the reason everybody wanted mags was they wanted to increase the width of wheels. Tiger paws were one of the first wide tires and then Goodyear custom wide treads. And with new aftermarket fender flares everybody can go wider.
Is this what is referred to as "centerline"?
What's that convert to in imperial units?
how did you get 4.4 inches with a tape measure
actually the last statement is incorrect. Backspacing is the distance from the back of the wheel to the inside of the lip.Where the bead seats.
Backspacing is the measurement from the mounting surface to the back of the wheel, and I'm pretty sure that's what I said.
Hey I’m curious on your opinion on spacers are they safe or no ?
I've run spaces in the past and I consider them a temporary solution until you can sort out your suspension and wheel combo to not need them. I've never had issues with them when installed properly.
Are we all going to skip over the fact that this man looks like an older Alan Harper from 2 and a half men?
Pick a unit of measurement, Metric or Imperial. Why are you using both?

I put on four tires today by myself basically blindfolded and I have no idea what you're talking about
millimeters and inches in perfect harmony... little by little USA little by little...
Metric, metric, IMPERIAL.
Is it 4.4" because the rim width is 8.8"?
Or maybe rim is 8.5 with 0.3 being taken up by the Bead?¿?
All metric until the end, when you switched to imperial. That's what crashed a Mars lander.

Why do you use millimeters and inches I’m confused
I'm with you, but you'll have to take that up with wheel and tire manufactures!

when you realize you should have used a dry-erase marker...

But you didn't mark the center. You are off by the thickness of the ruler. Jus sayin.
Wheel offset
Now you've thrown it off balance. Lol
Still don't get it 😮
All you need to know is the wheel size and it’s backspace. It’s that fn simple. There’s no need to know offset BS.
