      Question;
      We have property in Western NC at 4000ft and the rolling lawn we have was once a Christmas tree farm that had been cleared. Seems we are down to pretty hard packed soil and the lawn has been taken over by wild tall grasses. While that is nice, is it possible to see similar results following this method or does this mean we would have to add a top soil layer since that area was cleared?

    Your lawn system works. I live in the Mid-Atlantic region and this past September/October I followed the instructions in your previous videos and my lawn looks FANTASTIC! In fact, my neighbor was so impressed they wanted to know who I used for my lawn service. Anyone who is considering trying this out but is a little intimidated, it isn't that difficult to do at all. The only "issue" I had was that I took a day off of work to make sure I could rent an aerator from Home Depot due to high demand for the rental on the weekends. Thanks for the great tips.

    Great video. My lawn's much, much smaller, so (I hate chemicals), I cut it short in the spring and then used a mower blade with vertical tines on it because most of the weeds were broadleaf. It took out 90% of the weeds and the new grass did the rest.

    It's taken me 5 years to get my parents' front lawn somewhat reasonable. My Dad was sick so the responsibility was mine to do it. We don't have any herbicides here at all none of them legal. But finally it's looking good. I found aeration is OK but dethatching and scarifying does more than aeration. Scarifying even more so since then I seed and fertilize.Top dressing is hard to find so it's just me and a rake. All weeds pulled by me by hand 1,000s of dandelions. All all my tools the dethatcher scarifier was my best investment.

    I tried something different this fall with Tenacity. I was reading somewhere that you can apply it after the first early frost. The weeds take that as a sign to suck in nutrients and toughen up for winter. Applying the Tenacity at that point (not what the label recommends) means they really take in that stuff. We had a warm fall and it is early December and my lawn is still pretty green but I do see the weeds I sprayed turned white. We will see what happens in the spring.

    Nice video! I did almost the same steps as you, but didn’t have as severe weed issues. The one thing I did different was that I spread a few bags of granular humic acid at the same time as I seeded. I have a lot of clay just under the sod surface so the humic acid encourages the grass roots to penetrate deeper which mean less watering. Doing aeration, overseeding and humic acid granuals every 2-3 years is a great way to have the best lawn in the sub.

    About the only time I'd recommend sod is with St. Augustine, and even then you need a good soil base. When I was a kid someone talked my dad into putting down sandy loam and sod on top, and that was such a bad idea! It took 20 years for the sod to get a good root in, and before it had you couldn't set foot on the lawn if it was wet or the sod would just slip out from under you.

  • @johnjingleheimersmith9259

    If a seller can't maintain their yard like that, then it's often a sign you need to be extra wary and get a super detailed inspector that you trust to inspect whatever else they might have neglected to maintain.

      @LowJSamuel Před rokem +5

      Not a very reliable sign. Lots of people don't care about their yard being manicured, only cut. And lots of people neglect even mowing their yard as they get ready to sell in cases where they've already moved out into a new house or whatever. The condition of the lawn means very little.

    You started Mowing and Clean Up in the Summer, June.
    You applied weed and feed in the Summer, July.
    You applied Tenacity in the Summer, Late July.
    So all the prep was on or about the "Dog Days of Summer", when it was the hottest.
    Then Aeration and Overseeding in September. Then you watered the lawn consistently, and did not mow for 4-6 weeks.
    That means at 3:10, your results section of the video, that must have been around the first half to middle October.
    All told, the transformation took about 5-6 months. Very helpful and insightful video! Thanks!

      Just to add to your comment, since I have been here, we have deer, moose, weasels, bobcats, salamanders snakes and tons of unusual creatures. Sure, spraying nothing or doing nothing is best but just as gardeners like plants I like the grass and my kids live on it, so it's not just a showpiece. It also stays tick free by cutting low and being in the sun. It may not seem it but I use about 70% less chemicals than most other CZcams lawn channels, that's my choice My lawn isn't 100% and I am ok with that, save money and is good for bugs and bees. Our biggest need for the lawn is tick prevention, they stay off it and that's mainly where my kids and pets play with no deet on them to deal with.

    Came out awesome! I used JG Black Beauty this fall for my overseed and it made a massive difference. Excited to see how it copes with summer next year. Question though... I know the 1/3rd rule when mowing, but when you cut really tall grass like this, do you need to follow that and just make several passes or can you just do one large rough cut and then trim down from there?

      @SilverCymbal  Před rokem

      Thank you very much, so glad to hear JG has worked out for you. Its been a great seed for me over the years. So for the 1/3 rule it was definitely out the window for this mess. I do break that rule sometimes, its impossible if you are working and can't mow. I dont feel its ever caused me a big problem, but I am sure its best to try for the 1/3rd for best plant health.

    Why do you use an aerator instead of a slicer/seeder? You get 99+% germination with a slicer/seeder. Just my opinion.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před rokem +2

      That's a great question. You certainly could, this soil was super compacted and I would have need to do an extra step. The other issue I find with slicer rentals is they are often mis-calibrated and in one case years ago dumped 50# of seed in two passes! Not good but I realize if its tuned right they are great for seeding but for a regular home this two in one has worked so well for me I just keep sticking with it.

    Thanks for the videos! My neighbor refuses to properly drain his grass which sits lower than my adjoining property and grass so the root cause of the kyllinga is not addressed and is taking over my front lawn. The neigbor's lawn service sprays 'Celero' to treat the kyllinga which is harder to control than nutsedge but it seems somewhat expensive and tricky to come by. Have you ever tried Tenacity kyllinga and nutsedge?Though tenacity states it handles these two weeds I believe and have heard Tenacity doesn't really work that well on them.

    Sounds like the landscapers wanted a fast fix for you and that 100k you saved 😂
    But I’d guess most homeowners may not like a 3 to 4 month occasional work hopeful fix, that worked in your case.

    I get lawn envy when I watch your videos. You make it seems possible to tackle the projects myself. I have paid someone for years, and my lawn has gradually worsened. I've decided to do the yard this year. I have a ton of different weeds and very thin spots all over my grass. Can I seed and fertilize at the same time in the spring? Since my lawn is well established, would you suggest using Tenacity (after seed and fertilization)? If so, how long after fertilizing? The weeds have taken. Can you recommend a schedule for the most efficient way to tackle my project? My lawn looks so bad there is only one way to go.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před rokem +1

      Thank you, for now I am bagging mainly to ensure all weeds and weed seeds come up but long term I will try to mulch at least 50% of the time.

    Thank you greatly appreciate the video. We had our lawn test results in PH-4.20 should be 6-7 my soil ppm 7.13 should be 8-16. Your thoughts mostly needed lime? Last fall added 23 bags of pellet lime 20,000-25000 sqft.

    Did you use starter fertilizer in first 4-6 weeks or did the you realize you did not need it after getting the soil analysis back?

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před rokem +2

      Initially the only fertilizer I used was the weed and feed when I did the seeding, I did use starter fertilizer to help with root development and to prevent killing the new seedlings
