I love watching Northern Soulers dance - they're amazing! I remember being told how they used to get through loads of Johnson's baby powder so their shoes would slide on the dance floor. We have a friend who is 70 and he still goes to Northern Soul gigs - he guest DJ's at a lot of them - and he still gets on the dance floor! When Wigan was still open my Mum wouldn't let me go - she said I was too young to travel that far (100+ miles). By the time I was old enough sadly, it had closed down! So it's really lovely to watch videos like this - thanks for sharing on CZcams!
I was 15 when this was all happening and I wasn’t allowed to go either but made up for it since now live in Egypt an they love it but can’t dance to it😂😂
There was no powder on the dance floors , when I was dancing, from 73 to 78. It must have come in much later. Probably to make up for poor dance technique
I Went for the first an only time in 1977, I was only 18, but if I'd gone before, underage, I thought there might be a chance of being kicked out, I made sure that I was legal before I went there, if I'd known what I know now, I would have been there most weekends.
Changed my mind Richard Street in my opinion was with the Monitors at this time then obviously thr Temptations great track whoever sang this danced Wigan and Blackpool, thank you for post can't stop this feeling over 50 years later!
It was previously unreleased. Someone found an acetate of it in a Motown storage room. Nobody's even sure if it's actually the contours. Motown had so many hits this was just lying around unused.
Weatherspoon dean I know their style! This must be an acetate. Hit!! I'm sorry I dont know the singer. Possibly Sylvester Potts? Not Dennis Edward's if anyone knows. Please post
If you want to, you could. There's still loads of Morthern Soul venues, I'd go myself, but at 66 years old, maybe couldn't do the backdrops and spins like I used to. Still, great memories.
Gavin Stearn blessings my friend, still treasure my copy, the banter awesome and its "memories" on here, travelled more than doctor who lol, hope you and the family are all good, stay well xxx
i love this. hope to god the four tops version is found. the tops should've worked with william weatherspoon and james dean way more often. their songs have a beautiful soaring sound. just listen to their work with jimmy ruffin and the contours and the fantastic 4.
That is a bumper ! I could hear Jackie and Otis ,give this a go.I still love the unidentified voice on this track though. Bouncing all over the floor KTF

Beverly, we always kept the baby powder in our bowling bags too. Made your approach to the foul line...s m o o t h. You never stood on your head on dry floors that way. I can see it works well for dancing too.
Apparently Ian Lavine did a studio piano over dub on the Intro, he thinks its The Contours - not sure I agree with that, but its a bloody belting track who ever it is :-)

@@shellymorris7594 That's brilliant that Northern Soul is a big hit in Egypt 50 years after it was in Britain! Keep the Faith Shelly! ✊🏻

@@paulwoods2785 The talc was for the sticky floors not bad dancers. Some dancers slide so it helped them do that.

SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE must know who the lead singer is? Beautifully sung with real soul and the obvious pain of personal experience.
