  • In the first of a new subset of The Pakistan Experience, it is our honour to present the TPE Roundtable on Films with directors Sarmad Khoosat, Iram Parveen Bilal, Jami and Saim Sadiq.
    We discuss the current state of our film industry, the idea of a film fraternity, censorship and what it takes to make a film in Pakistan.
    Sarmad Khoosat is the legendary director behind hits like Humsafar, and he starred in and director the artistic masterpiece, 'Manto''.
    Jami is one of the most foremost directors in Pakistan, with his movie, 'Moor', widely being regarded as one of the finest Pakistani films ever made.
    Iram Parveen Bilal is an independent film maker, whose film Josh received critical acclaim in Pakistan. Iram runs a script writing mentor program in South Asia called Qalambaaz. Currently about to release her next feature ILL MEET YOU THERE (urdu title: Bismil) that was in comp at SXSW2020.
    Saim Sadiq has a MFA in film from Columbia University. His first short film, Darling, won the coveted Best Short Film award at the Venice Film Festival.
    TPE Roundtables looks to bring industry leaders to discuss the current state of any field.
    The Pakistan Experience is a podcast looking to tell stories about Pakistan, and Pakistanis, through the lost art of conversation.

    Just started to watch the podcasts few days back.... Started with Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed's podcast...and then went on to binge watching Tariq Ali and Jibran Nasir's podcast.... All the podcasts were very interesting and intriguing....Keep up the good work!!
    And just a small suggestion.... do some more podcasts on the dying cultures and languages in Pakistan majorly Punjabi... This issue really needs to be raised and educate people to be proud of their culture and mother tongue(including the Sindhi and Balochi too). Though I remeber you did one with LUMS professor.. that was kinda good too.... but do more on this issue not because I hate Urdu but just to educate people in taking proud in whats their...I love Urdu btw.... and above all Let us all serve humanity together.

    Speakers are constantly mentioning that pakistani population is lower than India's. I think thats a defeatist view in a way that Telugus, Tamils, Malayalis, Kannadiga's population is way lesser than pakistan but their film industries are thriving. And moreover Hindi movies doesn't have a market in South and East. All it requires one blockbuster and an excellent marketing machinery.

    What is wrong with the Pakistani film industry is....that first, it's trying to resurrect out of the ashes left by Sultan Rahi's (I blame late Zia ul Haq also) Gandasa culture, and second, the ones who are trying to resurrect it, the subjects they are picking are sooooooo serious that they do not read with a common Pakistani. Critically acclaimed movies are good for winning awards but they do not provide entertainment to a common man. They are already terrified of news channels and their family concerns. They need light comedies, romance, mystery, horror, thriller, the typical commercial film, with better quality. Parallel cinema should have a presence, but it should not be hovering over general perspective of 'entertainment'. Why movies like 'Punjab nahi jaon gi' did so well? People want to spend some light, fun, happy time in the cinema, not to become bipolar by watching gravely serious cinema. At least not at the start of this second chance.

    • @zulmawani1416
      @zulmawani1416 Před 4 lety +1

      Sobia Makhdoom I entirely agree with you about the sheer entertainment value of these films that the vox populi not vox elitus(?) crave. In the early stages of Indian cinema , not Bollywood, Raj Kapoor in a memorable interview stated that the Indian audience was an ideal audience for they did not ask for much, except to be entertained for a couple of hours so they can temporarily forget about the travails of their daily existence. Pakistani cinema desperately need to learn this lesson.

    • @zulmawani1416
      @zulmawani1416 Před 4 lety

      Malik Shoaib I don't know about "parallel " cinema but there definitely is a genre of cinema which does not mimic the mainstream. In India it used to be referred to as "Art" cinema but nowadays it is more common to refer to it as Independent productions as distinct from Bollywood. Netflix too recognizes these different genres and posts these productions under a separate rubric. In USA too there is now Independent film productions and the Hollywood actor, Robert Redford even has a separate film festival for these independent films. I do not know what Irma(?) was smoking but some of her remarks were beyond the pale! Please tell her to stop messing with her hair, it's very irritating 🇨🇦

There should be drama, action, comedy, music and dance in two and a half hour film. The recent hit "Punjan Nahin Jaongi" is a real Pakistani film. The films like "Cake" looks like PTV (Pakistan Television) long play.

    One advice: NEPALESE film industry is more stable than yours. It produces good amount out of aristic and commercial cinema...Why don't pakistan dub it and play in pakistan..Literally those film already did there business... You will get in way cheaper to run your cinema during off period.
    Plus you can collaborate with them to produce cinema. A joint production can cut down the cost.
    For fact: Nepal has 130 screen, 100 cinema producing each year with 3 cr population. And nothing is banned in nepal. They play english as well as indian movies.

    Sarmad's point of view on censorship is very simplistic and problematic, and it lacks self-reflection. Saim's, on the the other hand, is much more contemporary and intelligent. There is a wider culture of (self)policing and (self)censoring our opinions that Sarmad does not take into account. And he is talking about questioning stereotypes: huzoor, you directed Humsafar, a play that glorified consanguinity (cousin marriage). More than 60% of marriages in Pakistan are consanguineous (cousin marriages), which give rise to an increased rate of birth defects in children. As a result, Pakistan is producing a highly disease-ridden population because of cousin marriages, and here is a play that glorifies it. Redemption is sought in regressive values that the society holds dear and important, not in questioning these values, not in moving towards progressive values. So, on the one hand you are decreasing the cultural space for expression yourself by kowtowing to the preconceived notions of the society. And then you realize that the cultural space has been decreased when Zindagi Tamasha gets banned. I wish he could have reflected on his own complicity in reinforcing these regressive values. There is, of course, historical depth to the way these regressive values became so dominant in Pakistani society and until people like him who are opinion makers in Pakistan reflect on their own complicity, there is very less hope for any substantial change.

    No Place for cinema in Pakistan.
    Becoz of being a Islamic religious beliefs effecting major censorship Problems to tell a honest unbiased story. Pakistan entertainer industry must stick to Age-old tried & tested hit formula like Comedy,Gisa pita family drama & 90 s Bollywood inspired movies which Pakistan has mastered the art...
    But to upgrade Pakistan cinema they need to change mindset & get ride of deadly Combo mulla/ miltary/ elite group from Pakistan govt which are governing them making hell for Pakistanis 😬 though it's a far far distant dream to come true ..May be another 50 yrs later🤐😲 ....kya hmmm it's doubtful seriously😥

    Loved all the guests' insights, except that "Jami" guy. Not even a single thing he said was good, also his talking style is rubbish.
