At the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the tiny town of Stavrovo is at the epicenter of a great history. Its location, the proximity of the front line, the railway, crossroads of several roads led to the city a large garrison of the Germans. But in the city there is an underground, consisting mainly of yesterday's schoolchildren.
This is the story of the confrontation between two young people, two life positions - the Komsomol member Alexei and the traitor Dmitry. Both are young, both read the same books in childhood, went to the same school, and loved the same girl.
But the first, without hesitation, gave his life for what he considered sacred - for the Motherland, and the second selflessly tortured and killed his own compatriots, neighbors, acquaintances, former classmates.

An EPIC movie! A master piece with outstanding acting performance giving a true historic documentation about the inhuman cruelty and insane suffering caused by a war we shall never forget!
This is a great Russian Film about a Russian who collaborated with the Nazis. He is discovered in 1956. The film is about the investigation to confirm he is the traitor using flashbacks that are easy to follow. The plot seems simple but the film is complex and intense. The Female Russian Major is such a great actor she steals the movie. All the actors are great especially the villain portrayed by two actors as a young man and an adult Bravo Russian filmmakers, you produce wonderful films ! The film has good English subtitles that are easy to follow.

Especially now adays
No doubt in anyones mind, the people of Russia and the Former Soviet Union suffered greatly before, during and after the war. A long suffering people deserve justice. A great film this and thank you for presenting it and the skill of all involved. Cruelty should NEVER be rewarded and ALL our hopes, rest on the hope Justice is served. Understanding where one comes from helps in getting them where they need to go.

I think the story was so well portrayed , directed and edited , subtitles were not necessary . Pictures and cast spoke volumes even when there was no lines to say . A truly superbly made film , very deep and emotional .

A very difficult story to tell, but told very well. Some recent Russian films seem rather brash, but this one is profound and absorbing.

Many thnx for making this movie available. An emotional journey, strong on psychology. Many friends of my father who worked in forced labour in Nazi Germany, owed their life and their liberation to soldiers from the Red Army. This kind of movie makes us remember that.

It's a great movie! Imagine the impact of someone who betrayed his own country & his people.' After so many years the main character still knew him & his 100% sure that it was him.' My favorite scene was when her mother said that "He is not my son, He is the traitor."
Japanese invaded my country during WW2 & some of my people became a traitor & most of them was also killed by the the Japanese Soldier's after they are done using them.'
Russian WW II War Dramas are usually done quite well; this story is no exception. Real good movie. I wish I could understand the language, but subtitles in English are fine. The Soviet People endured quite a lot against the Germans and played a very great role in Hitler's ultimate loss. An American living in Hopkinton, Mass., USA.

I agree 110%. Wish I could speak it. My uncle was a German soldier in Stalingrad. He spent 5 yrs in the Gulag. He could speak Russian, and he had no hard feelings. He admired them. He said its hard to learn a peoples language and not admire them. And what a lingo!! A whole new alphabet!

I think its so especially heartbreaking for the mother because I think that was the only son that made it through the war. Can you imagine that? Three of your children and your husband are dead, and one is alive but its... the traitor Dmitry Pronin.

This is the best Russian movie I've seen. Mind you, I haven't seen a bad one yet.
It really moved me...too many suffered during the Japanese occupation, salute to all brave men and women who fight and died in our country.
I respect the Japanese because they could still fight those Russian though physically Japanese people are much smaller than the Russian.

He has reason to hate the Communist system, for the killing of his father without trial. But to show brutality of this horrific level to people in his neighborhood, people he grew up with, is unjustified and the guy is certainly a demon. This could be an imaginary story but very beautifully told. I liked it.
