I recently got brought in on a project being built on this for level design. While I am not in love with the hardware limits that comes with the territory I have been enjoying the process
I believe that, at least for now, the closest thing to SNES and Genesis that we currently have is the Clickteam Fusion. It's great for these types of games, but very limited if you want to go beyond 16/32 bits (GBA)
major update was slopes, the community really wanted that feature for a very long time, so that became te center feature in this particular update. now, platformer levels arent just blocks and straight levels like mario anymore, we can make basic sonic levels with the slope function
Furnace is probably better but also harder to actually integrate into a game because hardware export isn't available right now for it so you'd have to convert the song file to the format the engine you're using uses yourself
Hi Mike! Thank you for bringing amazing content always! I have a question, on the docs it says that you can export to GB and HTML, does a tool exist in order to export in a .exe file to upload to steam for example??? I think it is a great tool to achieve that retro look that perhaps some people are looking for
@@nestorpiedraquesada2954 the devs don't seem that interested in expanding the engine outside of being for the GB. You can use any engine for a retro look though, Gdevelop or Defold would also work. Or maybe someone makes a branch if you're lucky.
You know, it is possible to make it into a general purpose engine. All you need is a program that takes the ROM, and takes an emulator, and auto-loads the emulator with the ROM the moment the game starts.
Linking screens together like that looks really nice. It may not work for more complex games, but it sure works on the simple ones. GB Studio does remind me of Bitsy (or one of it's clones Binsky, BitsySharp) Both fit into a trend of game engines that focus on simple worlds that might actually have started with Rogue, NetHack and Multi User Dungeon's (MUD's). These homebrew games seem perfect for the mobile crowd (Android/IOS), but do not target it directly. For Interactive Fiction (IF) there are platforms like Choice of Games that make it easy to play these simple games. Would a GB Studio store on Android be a good addition to the PLATFORM?
Does it allow you to write your own scripts too or are you limited to the gameplay styles they've created for the engine? It seems very impressive and user-friendly, Im just curious about how flexible it is if you have a unique idea

Man, the scene layout for this engine is ingenious. Hopefully other engines adopt this format, preferably GDevelop.
As a GBS dev its incredibly flexible and easy to work with. Definitely worth developing for

This seems like a really solid option for making stuff for game jams.
First came NES Maker, now we have GB Studio. I hope we get a SNES Engine sometime soon.
There's a big technological leap between any of those and the snes but that could happen
I believe that, at least for now, the closest thing to SNES and Genesis that we currently have is the Clickteam Fusion.

Im literally searching for a GBA studio lolmao
@@EderRSWclick team can’t make actual 16 bit games I’m pretty sure it can just make games that look like it
Unfortunately proper SDKs don't exist for it unlike Famicom & GB
Yes, I wouldn't mind having a a version of this to make NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis games or just a general purpose engine. This is pretty cool!! 🎮
I love playing with GB Studio. The limits on animation frames and sprites is a major challenge when trying to create interesting combat variety.
Probably the best way to make a cozy starter game, with web builds, Analogue Pocket and roms, GameBoy games will always be trendy
The only game development environment that’s really “clicked” with me
Man this looks so cool! I'd love to make a very small de-make of my actual game for funsies, but I should probably just work on the real thing.
major update was slopes, the community really wanted that feature for a very long time, so that became te center feature in this particular update. now, platformer levels arent just blocks and straight levels like mario anymore, we can make basic sonic levels with the slope function
wow yeah I would love if this just became a general purpose engine
I guess that's the easiest way to make homebrew games for gba/nds/3ds today.
Nope it does only gb and gbc games.
@@Snowman0147 good enough. gba can run gbc, as well as nds and 3ds can run it too.
@@gokudomaticThough if you or anyone else wants a dedicated Game Engine for making NDS games I would check DS Game Maker.

@@LostPostProductions good point. but I see it's not as user friendly as GB Studio.
I hope for an NES Studio soon.
You mean NES maker?
It already exist but it costs money.
@@brahillms1374 I am happy to pay the $36.00, but it is Windows only. :(
Just recently started making GameBoy music with this. It's pretty useable and like 2 minutes from google to making music. Recommended!
Have you also tried LSDj?
Furnace is probably better but also harder to actually integrate into a game because hardware export isn't available right now for it so you'd have to convert the song file to the format the engine you're using uses yourself
LSDJ and Furnace are Better than HUGE Tracker
But using it is fine since it's the only one compatible with GB Studio
I wish that they would someday support the gba as well.
The music implementation seems very nice. Trying to make mod files back in the day wasn't all that fun while I was using it two years ago

Tools exist to bundle a web app into a normal app. This probably isn't the tool to create steam apps though
@@gamefromscratch Thanks! I see, perhaps on another update they could take that into consideration

@@DarkerCry yeah I was curious bc the tool kit is amazing, so I'd like to use it for more games
@@nestorpiedraquesada2954 yah I really like the UI for it, it's actually kind of a shame it's only meant for GB.

Hopefully It's possible to do ASM...
Great video! What software did you use for the particles?
Kinda wish you did more tests with these engines than just reading a changelog tbh
Cool
I wonder if they would ever expand this to support NES development
As far as that goes, I definitely recommend NESMaker. However, it's nowhere near as intuitive as GBS
It there a way i can buy lots of Gameboy Color or Gameboy motherboards in any condition.
Btw, I'm curious why use single image for tile map, or this is just for example only?
It's the nature of the hardware. It was capable of drawing large backgrounds and then for ground sprites.
Is it downloadable on iPad?
If they make something like this for mobile development, would be amazing
Edit: the world link is amazing
They use the name "Game Boy" on their site, has Nintendo sued them already?
free fan made engine for a nintendo device I wonder why?
Is it just me, or is the audio with very potato quality?
Just me, my laptop is becoming a potato
So everything is free, None of this stuff cost money, Sprites don't? It's all free?
Not as niche as batari BASIC - a BASIC compiler (not interpreter) for the Atari 2600 :)
Never knew a Atari VCS Parallel to Family BASIC would be a thing
I prefer 3D gameplay with jumps and clibming.
Does anyone have any good turn based rpg tutorials? I havent really been able to find more than a couple of older videos
