Is there a different technique for flat feet runners? Could you give some advice on running with flat feet?
Knee pain. I did 1) Hip Abduction exercises 2) Foot Strike under my body, midfoot landing (I used to overstride and forefoot landing) 3) shorter stride. No more problems.
1:20, no need to thank
Lowering your head and running in such a way that keeps your head from bobbing helps too. Involves bending your knees more and slightly lowering your center of gravity. The Tapps make really good points here too. Really like this channel, great place to learn about parkour and athleticism as a whole.
Hey, I will sure try the lowering my head, etc. pointers. I have a swimmer- type body, so I don't wanna lose so much weight, but running will help me save a bit of time, instead of putting on kinda heavy rollerblades and safety gear more. Thanks, chao.
Landing impact is under the hip. That's the best and most simple advice I've heard when researching. Thank you!
For those who are interested in this, Born To Run by Chris McDougall is an absolute must-read - it's absolutely fascinating in terms of history, context and so on, but also gives a considerable amount of practical advice along these lines! Here's one: make sure to run three strides every second; it sounds like a lot, but again, it's about moving lightly and taking your weight off your legs as soon as you put it on.
I think what goes along with this is that you need to use your posterior chain more for running. So push off from the glutes and hamstrings, rather reach forward with your legs, lifting your hips and groin. I learned this the hard way. Heel striking does actually result from trying to increase your stride by reaching your legs forward.
Lol I was literally going through the problem where I was worried I was going to hurt myself if I started implementing running into my workout, and then this video popped up in my feed. Thanks so much for the video guys!
Love your videos, they helped me to start getting more exercise :D
Beginner runner here prepping for my first 5K thanking you for these tips!
If you really want to run, #1 don't be running on concrete or any surface that doesn't have some give. Grass, or dirt is much more preferable. The hard surfaces like concrete increase any damage from impact alot more. If I ever chose to run I prefer staying away from sidewalks and stuff.
That's bs. Do run BAREFOOT on hard smooth surfaces in order to learn proper technique.
(Barefoot running on grass is tougher if your feet are stiff, but it's also good to release that stiffness. It won't teach you how to bend your knees, relax the feet and shorten stride to minimize strike impact, though.)
i have a bad knee and lowerback. did this and yes i feel less pain. nice thxs guys
You made a mistake saying in the thumbnail "DO THIS"
Thanks for the upload bros. Short runs with longer strides is recommended for greater health benefits in a shorter period of time, However for a beginner or for a regular runner using different techniques is of greater benefit for challenging your body.
I agree, a shorter stride will help. I've run well over 100,000 miles. Never had much joint issues since I corrected a patella tracking problem when I first started running. I run fore-mid foot strike (Never be a heel striker - two words: plantar fasciitis), in well cushioned shoes with minimal rise, on softer surfaces. Never concrete and minimal asphalt. I run off road now. Who''s gonna make it? We'll find out in the long run :-) Best!
Docinaplane thank you.
Docinaplane ultra marathoner?
No, I did it the easy way, 10-12 mile runs most every day. I've never run a marathon because with the race and time off, I actually run further over the week. I run for life and don't like taking time off. I've done 1/2s and once ran 35 miles just because :-) Once I got into shape, it felt so good, I never wanted to lose that. I run in the early mornings. As a surgeon, I am very awake when I get to the hospital, . The ultramarathoners I've known don't do so well health wise. I may be born to run, but I'm not crazy, lol
Docinaplane omg that's so cool
Docinaplane and what kind of movement do you recommend for asphalt or concrete running?
the best way i had learned was to find some soft ground and run bearfoot
great video on running form thanks! best one yet!
Love the short-haired look u suit both options 🙂
Great video wish I'd watched this video months ago as I've almost damaged my knee using wrong technique!
i never watched / filmed and watched myself running, but just from the top of head, i would say, i intuitively did the short strides from the get, though more out of conservation of energy to run more than 5 minutes but retrospectivly thinking about it, i never had joint pain after running, and i started at around 95kg last year .... some neurological health probs and winter shattered my motivation but i recently, early may, restarted running... did around 10km over around 60min this morning ... and might have gone longer, if i had the time
yup
Gratz 600k subs
I hate running but I know how good it is so I do it anyway. I found that skating has helped a bit with my stride, but admittedly I have been pretty laxed lately on the running.
thanks it's very useful
I'm waiting for next video
please upload daily video
thamks for the video i had realised this recently because i had been getting shin splints because of longer strides but now i modified my running and my pain went away
Thank you! A few years ago I was so ashamed of some big dude outrunning me, trying to catch the train I'm a tall guy myself and with 100kg landing on the heel feels like getting slapped at the back of the head... I started running on tiptoes to compensate the impact, but I couldn't hold that position for too long.
The best thing I have found that helps with my knee pain has been wearing a CBD infused knee compression sleeve made by hemp symmetry. Its great for knee pain!
This is good to know. I'm a big guy weighing in at around 300-305 lbs granted I've never looked overweight badly just a bit pudgy ya know I'm around 5'11 6ft tall or so and I've always done long strides. Really destroys my ankles in particular
I always looked more like I was launching myself with every step instead of running like a normal human being lol thanks guys this'll help a lot
Could you show some exercises to learn how to spin in flips like front 360 or b twist
Interesting suggestion. I have traditionally been a heel striker but have been trying mid/front foot impact. I also always tried to lengthen stride as I though it was more efficient and its what I see professional runners do. Since seeing your video, I have been trying the shorter stride. It does seem to lessen impact. It seems less efficient, though, more steps more energy spent. Also, I think shorter stride could lead to more bouncing. I had to catch myself on that. But it does seem to lessen impact.
lol I've been shortening my stride b4 this vid and can tell you its true!
Great timing :O
thanks for your help
Great tips guys!! I personally like the shorter hair Thomas! Looks good!!
You guys r awesome thx
Hey brothers!
Can we get a L or V sit to handstand tutorial video please?

Help me! thank you. please do reply sir x
Dear Tapp Bros. Please make a video on how to develop a mid foot strike while running and also about benefits of running. By the way...long hair or short hair..you guys are too good.
Offcourse using smaller Tapps while running is allways better 👍🏻😉 Great info brothers 👊🏻
Thank you so much! Definitely will add these tips to my repertoire.
Love the background nunchucks!
Thomas' long hair is an exceptional one, from the look of it, his long hair was so soft and good in texture!
Which other exercises are effective for cardio and cutting bodyweight ?
Thanks for your answer
Awesome channel btw ! :)
Hiit cardio, working out on a empty stomach, and keto diet and your welcome.4/16/19
To everyone who is critizing this video for the title is an ignorant. As silly as it might seem, most people do not know a proper form on how to run. Running is not just about moving legs and feet forward, it's a lot more than that. Those who posted those ridiculous comments critizing this video obviously don't have good running form.
ur videos r nice i luv them
i tried running on my heels for a long run, felt fine, next day my feet were stiff. couldn't run again for a year.
Running barefoot on the ground will almost immediately make you run with better technique, and implement what's discussed in the video. It helped me tremendously. I do it with jump training too. A lot of the shit we do with shoes on becomes almost impossible barefoot. After you develop good running and jumping mechanics and coordination, then put the shoes back on and hit the pavement.
how about a vídeo on how to deal with people that forbide traceurs, doing parkour in parks or other places? Like a teatralization?
How do you run faster if you are recommending a shorter stride length to reduce injury? Thank you.
✨Brilliant video✨ 🐐
since you made the video on running, i would like to know how fast one must run to loose some fat, gain a good physics and stamina?
What I learned is don't play basketball on concrete. I've know so many dudes I used to play with at the park that need hip & knee replacements in the mid to late fourties. May seem like that day will never come when you're a teenager, but days go by quick and that shit comes faster then you think. Stay away from running or excercising on concrete cause it'll tear you up.
Great! Thanks!!! 🚶👣
Hey tappbrothers, can you do a tutorial for parkour backroll?
Running barefoot is a good way to learn natural technique. just take it really slow at first, and if you feel pain, that's your body telling you to adjust your technique. And be sure to watch your step. Happy running!
Do you a video about how feet "should be" landing? Some people land differently than others. Ive read some of the "best" runners land on the outside of their feet first, then kind of roll inwards. Should my feet have a certain mobility first before i run?
When I take my foot to back I feel like my quads are tearing and cramping
wow dudes, great tips!
EDIT: you guys look cool with long hair or buzzed heads!
@Tappbrothers could you please suggest me how to survive Flat foot issue, after 2k my foot is getting bigger, feeling very much pain.
how is the most healthier to run heels or front of the leg?
What if it's not the joints that hurts? I have a problem where it's more of my heels that hurt. Not sure if it's the heel bone or the tissue below it. I did try out those five fingers shoes and ran hard on concrete a while back. I'm wondering if that could be the cause of the pain. When I'm sitting it doesn't hurt, only when I start standing and walking would it hurt. I tried recently to start jogging again and try to avoid landing on my heels. I can feel the pain still but it doesn't hurt as much . Any thoughts?
Thanks for that useful tip, and definitely short hair bros... Stay awesome :)
what exercises can I do for increase force in your legs (for side flip trick)
What that's my coach !!!!!!
good video
Hey I am 13 years old and can do all different vaults and wall runs I can presicion jump as well what should I try next?
yes just let your body fall and let the leg catch you as you fall, so let the weight of your body propels you instead of your leg, your leg is just to push up and support
I have a general question, I'm 22 and currently am enrolled in a police academy. I've never noticed anything wrong with my hip until I started righting my motorcycle. The pain was an ache while riding. While doing flutter kicks and legs raises I feel and hear my hip pop multiple times and it starts to hurt after a while. One Vader said to go to a chiropractor and just get realigned but I've never heard of that before. Any thoughts?
Zachary Oeller do go to the chiropractor, because it will really help with your hip and even your spine as well.
should I apply this when I sprint as well, or just when running, thank you for the video btw
I run from heel to toe in a fluid motion and none of my joints hurt
hey TappBrothers, I find your videos hard to understand :( It might be something to do with information structure.
As in this video - are long or are short steps better? Check mark for short ones, I saw.
Otherwise, early on I was inspired by an older classmate boxer who ran with short steps and I found it epic and effective in a difficult environment. And fun too. So I kept doing it :)
ive been trying to work on this for months now😂
how do you increase your stamina? do you just run more and get used to it?
perfect
Nice class 👍👍👌👍👌👍👌👍👌
Best tip: get proper running shoes with good cushioning and proper arch support, if you need it.
Can you teach the proper method of breathing while running?
Easy but takes time to master at first. Do not breathe steadily, huge mistake many new runners do. You want to take a quick breathe every time your foot hits the ground. The way you want to do this is by exhaling (or inhaling but for this example let's say exhaling) when your foot touches the ground, then exhale when the other foot touches the ground, then inhale on your next step, and inhale on the next step. Repeat this process. Inhale twice, exhale twice. Repeat throughout.
ss10 Thanks
how does one quantify joint pain into percents?
would this help me run without getting shin splints
How can I increase my speed? please make a video
Jumps. Vertical, horizontal, lateral, on to boxes, with resistance not weight, don't complete lengthen your leg when behind you. Pull with ball of foot when hitting the ground. And look up the company " Stack" they have a lot on all this.
Leighton Ki thanks men this will be healpfull :D
deadlift and squat
I recommend checking out the channel overtimeathletes
Gibran Maulana If you do proper strength training, and you can implement those benefits into running, you'll be faster. Squatting all day won't make you fast, if you don't knkw how to use your body. Jumping is good, but actually running is what will make you run better
Best way to run is to run with the front off the foot. not your heels
Søren Kaas It's true, if you know what you're doing. But unfortunately many beginners misunderstand it, and literally run on the front of their feet, destroying them in no time.
In natural environments i often find that this forefoot stuff is mostly optional, you change your foot placement depending on the environment and speed (but still not that direct heel impact stuff that many runers do)
not true, many marathon runners run differently, some on the heel first, some on the front foot first.
watch the nike 2 hour marathon documentary if you dont believe me
solbanan that may be true but the best/right way to run is to use the front foot first
Sprinting uses the front/toes of your foot and when running longer distances you use more of your foot(heel, toe)👍🏼
Havak True, but optimally your heels barely touch the ground
i came here to get into parkour and have that as a hobby and i really really want to get into it but i cant even do one push up so maybe i'm just worthless all around
What do you bench
How to increase speed ? Easy exercises for it ???
i can give you answer for it, when u run , run Tabata, that will help you really much and fast
i didn't explain it: you run 20 sec sprint then you walk 10 sec. It is hard in start to get used to, but for increasing speed is golden
Peter Markstone I agree Tabata is very effective
Sahyl practice it. It's more a skill, practice running a distance as fast as you can as much as you can possibly give. The more tired and sore you get the less you can train, if you look at speed as a practice then you just repeat it lots and your body adapts to what you're doing.
Sahyl Sprints. Run as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Rest for one minute. Repeat this as many times as possible; up to 8 times.
what about jumpers knee treatment
A lot of people who dont know more in depth about running or track will think this is for speed. Just to make it clear, this is directed towards distance running, not sprinting. Sprinting is completely different from running, and the same tips do not apply. This won't help you run faster, but rather easier and more efficiently for longer distances.
heel striking is very hard on your body as well, imagine you are barefoot when running
Looks much better short hair man 👍🏻
Hey i have a question!
Recently i have been learing parkour ,but i have to keep on taking week long breaks as my feet and knee caps hurt when i run ,i am in shape and have decent upper body strength but am limited by this. Any fixes or advice ?
Omiae same here
overuse and misuse. take consistent rest days and pay as much attention to technique as possible. go slow with increasing joint impact. being quiet is the best thing to make sure you are doing it correctly. take a break for a month if it continues and then go reaaally slow. you don#t wanna irreparably damage your body
I had same problem. Whenever I did squats with weigts or doing parkour, my knees hurted. In my case it was bad form on more than one front. Turning knees inward while squating, and "heavy" steps during running (heavy impact on joints).
What helped me for parkour:
-warm up properly not just few secs, but real warm up
- runnig and falling more on balls of your feets (stronger calfs) and making it more like spring (mechanical part) movement, even when you can fall with strong legs without problem, make it more like spring (it even looks smoother - bonus). And trying to avoid heels in every case possible.
- try to walk barefoot and on balls of your feet
Hope it can help you
I had this same problem. I found out that the source of my problem was that I had really flat feet. I went to a sport shoe store and they helped me find the right shoes for me. I haven't had and knee or foot pain since.
Toughen up? XD
Seriously though, if its not excessive pain (and even then) you should still try to push yourself. The human body can do things most people don't realize (albeit with consequences in the extreme cases). I have bad knee joints but I just make sure to stretch them out really well before and after and just roll with it even though I'm aching afterwards its not damaging my legs its just annoying like allergies.
you looking cool man. 😊😊
Nice video bro
well what about increase stride cadence? Try to reach 180 or more, it will shorten naturally your stride. And then if you want to increase your speed increase stride length but maintain cadence. Ask to Olympian...
I experience shoulder pain while running. Any tips?
Random Dude Learn how to breathe properly, abdominal breathing is the best way to breathe when running
short looks way better
where did the parkour vids go???
You can you it *TODAY*
Either way, long hair or not, you both still look great. I don't mind the change to be honest haha
hey im a little small but im strong im 13 how can i learn parkour fast i am really interested please help
What about sprint?
hey i live in crandall
By the way, Jonathan can keep his long hair tied, while Thomas can wear a headband and still keep his hair long.
4:21 is that small black thing on your wall a centipede?
No its a black hole
