Luminiferious is, I think, front to back their most impressive record. But Blessed Black Wings got me into them when I was a dopey teen, and they were the first metal band I got into that sounded as rough around the edges as they do. I know it's sluggish in places but it's so sloppy and chunky and evocative. I love it
High on Fire is basically like a sludge/stoner/doom metal version of Motorhead. Matt Pike is musical genius in both this band and Sleep. First three albums are the best. HOF are at their best when they combine the sludge of sleep with the riffage of Celtic Frost. Eyes and Teeth, Madness of an Architect, Anointing of Seer, Bloody Knuckles, Steel Shoe, To Cross the Bridge - those are some of my favorites. For some reason, their thrashy frenetic stuff like Snakes just doesn't do a lot for me. Those Celtic Frost grooves are just savage - they do that style way more justice than any Scandinavian black metal band ever did.

Death Is This Communion’s light approach to production is something I go to more frequently but I can’t deny that Luminiferous fucks HARD. Also appreciate Jeff Matz for the push to more Turkish melodies and sonic textures as those have given more flavour to the usual pummelling. The other half of Sleep, OM has a similar thing going on with their last couple of albums albeit in a more meditative way and less freakin’ releases.

I got into them starting with Snakes. Probably the best starting two song punch in the whole lot. Since then the albums improved. I’ve recently got into their older stuff which is a grittier ride. The first album with the two b-sides improves on that one. Southern Lord included them in the reissue in 2012.
Dood, dig ya channel and agree with much of what comes out that gob... but, '10,000 years' from their debut is one of their heaviest and best riffs.. But hey, that's me.
Very consistent band overall. My personal favorite is Death Is This Communion, but I also like their early work a fair amount as well. Great distinction on Death is this Communion. That record always sounded different than all the other records to me. And in a good way-it's always been my favorite HOF record. But I am pretty optimistic about this new one based on the single.

High On Fire rocks! Perfect for both rocking out or staring at the wall tripping out to. That being said, Mike Pike's original band Sleep is even better at both! Had one of my best trips listening to Sleep.... Everything flowed into me and I became the Univverse!

My only problem with snakes for the divine is the production is very weak & muddy. Doesn’t sound as heavy even tho we all know damn well they’re playing heavy as hell

De Vermis Mysteriis is my favourite album, the stand-out track is Bloody Knuckles it has one of their most vicious and memorable riffs.

Honestly you can't go wrong with anything from "Blessed Black Wings" and beyond, but I'd specifically recommend "Luminiferous" since its my favourite.
