Operation Deny Flight, a formation of no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina began in April of 1993. There were numerous violations but NATO forces were only giving warnings until 28 February 1994. The Serbian entity, Republika Srpska sent six of its J-21 Jastreb and two J-22 Orao combat aircraft against two weapons factories controlled by Bosniaks. For the first time, NATO fighters would go beyond just warnings. Not since the Korean War was a USAF pilot credited with so many victories in a single day. This incident also saw the involvement of Scott O'Grady who would later become famous (or perhaps infamous) after being shot down over Bosnia.

I thought the F-16 Stick was in reality fixed: with inputs of pressure to direct both pitch and roll of the aircraft.
@@Mthammere2010 You are right. The TQS is the Thottle Quadrant replica. They are different things.
Congratulations bro on becoming an ambassador of thrustmaster, well deserved.🍻
Thanks a lot! I will finally be able to upgrade my graphic card thanks to this :)
Man, i remember this watching it on the news. I was a kid back then but had strong interest in aviation so it left me with strong impression as i imagined dogfights ware still happening on a scale where multiple fighters ware involved. I think that the serbs claimed one f16 shot down just so save some face. I felt a little bad since in Macedonia we still felt as Jastreb's and other planes produced in Jugoslavia as "our" plane.
Yeah, it was pretty big news at the time, I remember it well too. It took a few days of uncertainty until things became clear.
Congratulations on becoming an ambassador of Thrustmaster man! I think that it is a strong fact of acknowledgement of you as a prominent person in the flightsim community. And it is definitely true and well deserved by you. Also big thank you for another great video on such an interesting and not widely discussed subject. I would really like to know more about the aerial part of this particular war.
Thank you very much for the positive feedback! This piece of hardware was reviewed by many channels already when it came out. But they are almost all the major YT channels somehow connected with DCS. It felt nice to be in that company. As for this historical topic, it's definitely not exhausted yet.
Congrats man,
You are blessing for us aviation connossiuers.

Hello from Western Canada
Nice new toy👍 your title citing Banja Luka really got my attention as I spent 6 months there.
Thanks for the comment! That is how this incident is usually called although it didn't happen right over Banja Luka but relatively close to it.
@@showtime112 yes, it's often the case with air and sea battles.
Another cool video. I'm not very familiar with this particular engagement, so thanks for featuring it. Also, congratulations for becoming a Thrustmaster ambassador! That TQS unit looks incredibly mouth watering. I used to have their original TQS as well as their 2 sticks based on the f-16 control stick (the f-16 and the f-22 sticks), released back in the late 90s. Solid kit, they were. Too bad they're no longer usable today due to the disappearance of the joystick port. I'd really like to get these new gears, but too bad they're way beyond my budget. Anyway, keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to your next video.
Oh, you are a true veteran 😀 Yes, these modern high-end controllers are out of reach of most people and without this sponsorship, I probably wouldn't be able to afford them anytime soon. But I love the TQS, sometimes when I read something on my PC, I just put my left hand on it and it feels great 😀
Why is it unlikely that the J-22 & J-21 ever will be modelled in a simulator? There must be some Jugoslav Air Force enthusiasts out there, actually quite a lot I'd imagine!
Well, it could happen but I wouldn't bet on it. I think the best chances are that these types appear in War Thunder someday. They need to introduce new types all the time and they might run out of options 😁 My plan was to use F-80 which is far more similar to J-21 in appearance and VSN released a mod for DCS. But I had some issues with the textures and it looked all wrong.
@@showtime112 WarThunder does release these very non-gameplay relevant planes once in a while, like the Po-2 fx, so maybe. But as long as they're not really a modding platform it will probably take some time!
Another excellent presentation of a famous incident, with a helpful geopolitical historical summary for context. Feelings are simmering again in that region, and with a war already close by, I hope peace can be maintained in that beautiful part of world….
Thank you for commenting!
EXCELELNT. Another of your contribution for Aviation History. Keep the good work and THANKS for this video.
Thank you once again! Nice to hear from you.
@@showtime112 Thanks to you. In the past days I retired as an airline pilot, after 43 years flying Boeing and Airbus jets and more than 23,000 hrs. Thankfully no accidents and incidents. Now I can enjoy your vieos and follow you more closely. Greetings from Mexico City.
@@pablopeter3564Well, I wish you a happy retirement! It will probably be difficult not to fly anymore but it had to come someday. You can always try simulations if you don't do them already 😃
Thanks. For some reason I always find scenarios where one or both sides resort to using older technology in a modern conflict the most interesting.
I agree, these generation overlaps are quite extraordinary.
Reality is indeed stranger than fiction and harsher than video games.

Exactly, those are the most successful USAF fighter pilots in the post-Vietnam era.

I read an article about Su-9B Fishpot's landing on their own.
In 2 separate incidents, Su-9s land on their own, after ejection of pilots.
Research and if possible made video on them.
I hope, you will be good.
It could be interesting and we have Su-9s in War Thunder. Now, showing the airplane without the pilot and canopy is a bit of a problem because I think the airplane isn't animated like that. I'll investigate it.

@@planemod8399 Oh, that's right. Thanks! Not well researched on my part but I would have hopefully figured it out before making the video.😁
That AMRAAM probably cost more than the plane it hit...
Jastreb is basically late WW2 plane, more or less. No RWR, no chaffs, no flares... No real electronic whatsoever... Rather slow... And no air-to-air missiles. This can hardly be called a combat...
It was designed for a specific purpose and battlefield conditions.
@@showtime112 Imagine if MiG-21 were used instead...Or MiG-29's...JNA obviously didn't want to risk so they sent much cheaper jets
It is not JNA, it was republika Srpska entity, and they had only this j-21 aircrafts, basicaly Galeb trainer but single seater.
Aircraft have performances like F-84 .
Perfomance level of J-21 is just like F-84.
Good for 50-60s but for 90s?
It is like shooting at Baloons !!!
It still had guns and could carry bombs. It's more like shooting down a drone. A drone that happened to have a pilot in it.
I'm currently reading *Combat Aircraft: Conflict in the Balkans* by Tim Ripley and this incident intrigued me.
Nice joystick!
Some call the F-16 the Viper... Others the Falcon.. I prefer the Falcon... Because the Falcon is a bird of prey... That's exactly what the F-16 is... Just like the F-15 Eagle..
Well, it took me a long time to get accustomed to 'Viper'. Not to mention 'Lockheed'. When I red about this plane back in 1980s, it was General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. But pilots seem to call it Viper so I guess that's what it is. But Viper was actually considered as the official name. I mentioned that in my 'Five Things You Didn't Know About F-16'. It's in my 'Hundred Videos That Nobody Watched' category 🤣
@@showtime112 Much the same as the UH-1. Bell it's manufacture called it the Iroquois and the army tagged it the Huey...
Excellent video, but the F16s were part of the 555th "Triple Nickle" Fighter Squadron😊
Not at that time. The airplanes were transferred to the 555th in July 1994.
Thank you for this story. I didn't know this incident, unfortunatly the serb pilots had not not got a chance to avoid the american F-16 controled by Nato.
Furthermore their planes were too old for hoping to fight properly against modern planes like the F-16. On 1999, with the Kosovo's affair, the serb used their MIG-29, but no one had chance too against the US AIR FORCE.
They assumed that if caught, they would get away with a warning, like every time before. But it's hard to judge how long such behavior will continue.
Viens de voir sur TV maintenant. Le 3e ,Zarič s'est éjecté mais trop bas: hors enveloppe ou parachute pas ouvert??

How F-117 stealth bomber was downed in Serbia 🇷🇸?
Because the Serbs didn't knew it was stealth . . . 😂

Oh man, the Balkan war... after reading here and there about Yugoslavia, one can only wonder, forcing those different Balkan nations to live in a country together was such a bad idea, creating it was such a british deliberate mess, dismantling it was such a typical American clusterfuck project... and the rest of Europe, an entire country fell apart right in front of their eyes as they were just sitting there eating their potato salad, so many lives lost back then for no good reason...
It was a pretty unsuccessful project, that's for sure.
Its all a project for the western Empire to play around with countries and their peoples lives
i never know the difference between "NATO" and "American" military operations. the only NATO member participating in the banja luka incident was the USA, btw cool video
Several NATO nations contributed aircraft to the operation although naturally, Americans were the most numerous. Thanks for the comment.
They took off with full flaps?
It's a mod and AI was taking off there. Not everything is fully realistic.
17:55 Zarič May be éjectéd at low level and killed. Out of envelope éjection or parachute didnt open?
Thanks à lot mate for vidéo.😊 and to add my name for help for search👌
Yes, one of them (I believe it was Zarić) ejected but didn't survive due to ejection seat limitations. Unfortunately, I couldn't really replicate that in DCS as F-84 pilots always die when hit by missiles. You're welcome, sources you provide are very useful.

Hello Showtime 112. I could not agree more with you when you said the infamous Scott ogrady. I cannot agree with the american presence or it's European alliance in that war. Thank you. My salutations from Tijuana BC Mexico.
Another great show but infamous has a negative conatation so I don't understand why Scott O'Grady is... Keep up the great work. 💙
O'Grady came under a lot of criticism because for one thing, he got shot down without really doing anything to avoid it. Furthermore, he forgot good parts of his survival training (such as to not wave your pistol when the rescuers come to pick you up as they can shoot you). Crying at a press conference didn't exactly help either.
Ok but, infamous? I think that's overstating reality. Infamous means something bad. Criminals are infamous, not fighter pilots who make mistakes. It's just too harsh in my opinion. I mean, O'Grady didn't go rogue or anything like that.
I was part of Deny Flight. The stuff they sent up was awful, but their ground forces were also horribly antiquated. If the Soviet Union had attacked the West, these guys would have been nothing more than a speed bump on the way to Russia.
Thank you for sharing!
For somebody who chose a military career you are remarkably ignorant, Yugoslavia, speaking about the state which existed during the 1945-92 period, was never a Warsaw Pact member state, and the equipment used at the time of Yugoslavia's dissolution in 1991-92 by the Yugoslav Armed Forces and eventually taken over by the various warring factions included Soviet, Western and locally developed weapon systems like the J-21 Jastreb, something also mentioned in the video. The equipment of the Yugoslav military had therefore not very much in common with the equipment available to the militaries of the Warsaw Pact member states.
@@maximilianmax6996 LOLWUT? For someone commenting on something I didn't say, you are remarkably stupid.
What happened to the attack on the factories, was it a success?
Serbs consider it a success. The Bosnian Muslims say it didn't do that much damage. You know, the usual :)

Do you know how this works? Have you ever recorded a video and put it on YT yourself? Do you know how much of time and money it takes to properly research a historical event and then reenact it?

@@PappaBear_yt So what
What exactly made Cpt. O'Grady "infamous"?
Many people think that we didn't perform very well when he was shot down in 1995. The SAM attack was a surprise but he did literally nothing about it. He even forgot some of his survival training, for example he was holding his pistol when the rescue helicopters landed to pick him up which nearly got him shot by them. And of course, that crying on the press conference didn't help either.
@@showtime112 Yup. He also got all Republican and "Jesusee" after the incident and started mumbling nonsense how "God" saved him from the Serbian Ninjas who were hunting him on the ground as if he was stuck in the jungles of Vietnam for months, not the Bosnian woods for few days. He tried to run as a Republican in 2012 for a Republican-safe seat in the Texas State Senate but I guess "God" didn't vote for him because his campaign fell through (and coincidentally the incumbent Republican who held the seat for years failed to endorse him). With the lack of Go'ds support, O'Grady turned to the even greater power - Donald Trump, and offcially went MAGA -bat-shit-crazy in 2020 citing lunatic conspiracy theories (with no shred of evidence, of course) how Trump didn;t really lose the elections, Biden is eating children in the basements of DNC owned pizza chains, Killary is raping small puppies in Benghazi with the CIA's help...and the rest of the usual Trumpnards' greatest (s)hits. I think that should be enough for making him "infamous':)
