Shellie, your instruction on paper piecing with hexies is great. I started a grandma's garden quilt in 2021. Wish this video was out back then as many of the tips you gave I had learned by trial and error. Thank you so much for your encouragement and instructions. I love your videos, I always learn something and get inspired to keep creating.

This is one of the best instructional videos on English paper piecing. You’re using a clear and concise voice, slow enough for others to understand and stay caught up. Thank you Shelly and Carrie for taking on this quilt along.

Can I suggest a Clover 625 Dome Threaded Needle Case to store all your threaded needles it’s great for when you travel it holds up to 10 threaded needles and it won’t tangle your threads I got mine on Amazon. Thank you Shellie you are a great teacher!! I have wanted to do this quilt for a long time and when I came across this I was very excited..I did print off my own paper pieces and I started ..got to be truthful though I was disappointed that my stitching when doing the whip stitch across was slightly showing on the other side so I thought I might do the ladder stitch instead when I came across this stitch called invisible feather stitch and I tried it and boy was it a game changer..love love love it..just thought I would put that out there in case anyone else maybe having the same problem..again thank you for letting us all be included and taking your time to show us and involve everyone on here..

Hi Shellie: Just watching this video and want to let you know that I have done a lot of EPP and took a workshop last fall and the teacher taught the "flat back stitch", which is exactly what you are doing with sewing the green piece for the pathway. She also used paper tape to secure the pieces before sewing them when they were flat. I love that you do these educational videos. I can always learn something. Today I learned about cutting hexies without a template, but with the 60 degree ruler. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos. I so relate to everything you do and all the different crafty endeavors. I, too, quilt, knit, cross stitch, crochet, wool applique. Too many projects and not enough time.

I love your designs. I live, in GA. My local needlework shops are in Waynesville, NC, Annabella’s or the Tudor Rose in Clarksville, GA. Both shops carry your designs, so when I get to their shop, I buy your patterns (I’m not a pdf user if paper is available.). Elayne also has a Floss tube channel, Annabella's. I think JBW Designs meshes well with my CS likes. Due to an eye disease, Aida in a max count of 18 is my best option. Please keep designing these wonderful CS opportunities.

Dear Sweet Shellie, Thank you for this great video. I have already started hand stitching about 40 ish hex's & boy do I wished I had waited!! My papers don't have a center hole ( I ordered from Paper Pieces )so just another oops! No problem, will deal with it. I will be punching holes in the rest of my papers. I can't wait to get to the hand stitching. I think you've sold out FQ shop they are out of the 2" hexagon templates, well the Sue Daley ones. It really does look a bit intimidating stitching the whole blocks together and really appreciate your great help and instructions. Thanks, the one thing I have done in the past is use a very light thread (thinner) for the basting step. I've only made practice pieces, no finishes, yet!

You are great at clarifying just where someone would have a question. I've watched many many EPP tutorials. So many methods and I've taken away what works for me. I've seen others "flat stitch" as you have discovered. It is a method and mostly used to not allow stitches to be shown on the top side. Hi Shellie. I am using Straw Needles #11 and the Clover Desk Needle Threader. Sometimes the Needle Threader cuts the thread instead of threading the needle. If I use a thicker needle with a larger eye it does thread. But the thicker needle doesn’t slide as nicely through the fabric like the #11. I’m assuming #10 needle is slightly bigger. Have you ever used a #10 needle? Do the Daly needles thread better? Does a #10 go through fabric well?
Thanks for your help. And thank you for your wonderful videos. I really enjoy you and Kari. What a great team you make!

There are other English paper pieced quilt patterns that have all kinds of shapes. Do check into them.
We are just specifically working on this pattern.

Can you possibly Re-Use those papers with the glue on them? If so, do You put a mark on the side that had glue on it? You did a great job!! TY again.

I do reuse the papers that I’ve glued. You can get several go rounds with them. And I’ve never marked them- but I have re glued on the same side as was used the prior time you can feel it. It works out perfectly

I haven’t had a problem in the past, but you can surely wash and press if you would like. Also, please feel free to choose colors to your liking. If red like mine concerns you, choose something else. We want everyone to tailor their quilts to suit their own personal end result.

I’m confused about the 2” plastic template from fat quarter shop. It’s the same size as the paper template. I thought you used this plastic template to cut out the fabric. If both are the same size there is no fabric to wrap around the paper template. Please help me!!!! PS I love your video, it’s very helpful and I’m sure I’m just missing something here! Shirley

Hi Shirley. I did ask Missouri Star about the measurements of a Sue Dailey 2” template. Here is what they wrote:
Each side of the template measures 2", the height and width of the template is 4"
That makes more sense!! No more templates from Amazon/China for me!! Hope that helps. Happy quilting!

    • @antiqueneedleworkers

I do use cotton thread but was offering that if coats and Clark was all someone had to work with that is fine. The connecting threads essential 100% cotton that I showed is what I normally use .
I want people to feel as though they can use what they have especially if they are on a budget
