  • #derrenbrown #happiness #self help Derren Brown is many things - hypnotist, mentalist, magician, author, painter. Now, he’s turned his hand to the hardest trick of all - making us happy. In this conversation with Hannah MacInnes, he shares what he’s learnt. Derren's TV specials - Mind Control, Trick of the Mind, Trick or Treat, Russian Roulette, Hero At 30,000 Feet, Apocalypse, Sacrifice and Miracle - have achieved cult status, as have his books - Tricks of the Mind, Confessions of a Conjuror, Happy and Happier.
In PART 1 of his How To Academy Event, Derren discusses Stoicism, its strengths and its limits. As he does so, he dismantles the notion of ’self’ and goal-setting, and addresses how controlling what we can control over emotions and understanding the complexity of happiness will make your life better.

The self is a verb, not a noun. Thank you, Derren)

"The universe doesn't care about you." Whew! That's a load off my mind. What a refreshing outlook on goals. It reminds me of Liz Gilbert's "hummingbird" idea; a more eclectic and lateral approach vs. the "success ladder." Looking forward to Part 2! :-)

I think Albert Ellis and his REBT model is great for understanding some of what Derren speaks here. Ellis said, we disturb ourselves when we musterbate - that is say things like, I must be a certain way, you must be a certain way, the world must be a certain way... this is rigid and irrational thinking. The second part of his theory is 'awfulizing' or catastrophizing. Kindly, C.

All self help does is hooking you up, it doesn't teach anything, especially when it comes to social media. I have read so many book and I can only recommend Dale Carnegie.

There is no self. And of course nobody knows that. Nobody knows anything. The mind exists in duality. Duality is an an illusion.

Why don't you ask him what he thinks of the past two years of psychological manipulation? I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved.
