Hume’s ‘’crime” was to say that the science of the time (early Enlightenment period) had not looked into the possible differences or lack thereof between Europeans and Africans. He did not enslave anyone at any time in his life, either directly or indirectly. He observed differences in the cultures at that time and wondered what information could be obtained by the analysis of those differences. This idea was expressed in a single footnote in a book that had no connection with this question.

Sorry this is too late in the day now. There are too many opportunists making money out of all this it's like legalizing drugs hoping it would end drug dealing. Sadly Britain is considered a soft touch for everyone now the only way to end it beside severe crime or military action is ending the welfare state completely and free charity status as starters make everyone pay for everything like in their own countries that would have an impact. Otherwise will have to wait for another major economic collapse in the world.

OK, in order to stem the flood of migrants from across the globe to Western democracies, we have to first look at the fundamental driver of the crisis. And it's not what you (probably) think. It's not climate change. It's not economics. It's not religion. It's sponsored by Russia as means to attempt to de-stabilize Western democracy. And flooding democracies with immigrants and refugees almost always results in internal crises and political fracturing. It's been widely studied, and evidence tends to confirm a rise in right-wing parties and policies as a direct result of what's called "unbalanced immigration." Search out *Predicting the Rise of EU Right-Wing Populism in Response to Unbalanced Immigration* by Podobnik, Jusup, Kovac, Stanley One of the results, directly in line with this research, is the surge in popularity among far-right parties in the European Parliament in the recent (June 2024) election. This isn't anything new. Russia has been working on various de-stabilization programs for decades, primarily starting with the Russian-sponsored civil war in Syria as a way to drive countless refugees into Western Europe, specifically Germany and Scandinavia. BBC, March 2, 2016: *Russia and Syria are deliberately using migration as an aggressive strategy towards Europe, the senior Nato commander in Europe has said.* There are plenty more examples: Foreign Policy Magazine, July 18, 2022 *Putin Is Ready to Weaponize Migrants Against Europe* Middle East Institute, Aug 1, 2022 *Russia Created a Refugee Crisis, and Now Putin Is Weaponizing It* Reuters, March 13, 2023 *Italy blames surge in migration on Russia's Wagner group* And it's not just Europe. State-sponsored Russians are actively involved in human smuggling across the southern US border, to further de-stabilize an already-fractured US democracy. Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized CrimeMay 11, 2023 *Russian-speaking migrant smugglers on the US southern border* (Edited for spelling)

I largely agree with Mr. Sapolsky and think that he made the more cogent and coherent case for his position. The one point I'd quibble with is this: while the removal of the concept of free will from our collective consciousness likely wouldn't cause everybody to suddenly run amok-there are other rational factors that will still effect pro-social outcomes, just as there are rational factors that can lead an atheist to behave morally-per the premises of his own argument, he would have to admit that existing in an environment in which there'sa belief in free will produces different decision-making, even if the decision-making process is purely biological. If I've grown up in an environment in which I know (that is, it's biologically embedded in my squishy tissue) that I'll be held responsible for my actions, that factor itself will be part of my (possibly entirely biological) decision-making process. One obvious mechanism is that it (perhaps artifically) engages my self-interest in the decision-making process. Let's say (and this should be theoretically plausible given Mr. Sapolsky's position) that a perfect AI model was trained on human biology, its associated behavior, and the environmental context so well that it could perfectly predict what a given human with that human's personal and environmental history would do in any such situation. I think that in such a scenario, were the same human's behavior predicted on the large scale by a model that accounts for an environmental belief in free will and by a model that does not contain that environmental factor, one would expect the human's predicted decisions to be different in the two cases. Basically, to put it in similar terms to Mr. Sapolsky himself, that one environmental factor affects the biology of the brains forming in said environment meaningfully. This is also borne out in the same sorts of evidence that Mr. Sapolsky himself relies upon: children who are brought up to believe, perhaps erroneously, in personal responsibility are less inclined to engage in anti-social behaviors as adults. I think Mr. Dennett (RIP, congratulations on your new property 🎉) therefore had a better point to make regarding evolution. Richard Dawkins (whom one of them referenced) made the argument that the survival and persistence of ideas (memes) in our society is subject to forces identical or highly analogous to natural selection. The fact that free will persists (albeit as possibly just a social construct/illusion) in a time when our society is at its largest, most complex, and most productive is a sign that it may be evolutionary advantageous. Of course, that position would've been problematic on two grounds. The first is that the existence of an adaptation or an environmental circumstance does not alone constitute proof that it's advantageous, as it offers no evidence of how the biological creatures in that environment would be impacted by the absence of that factor. Diseases, for instance, persist (and in some ways are more effective) in the current environment, and one wouldn't use their continued survival as evidence that their presence is evolutionarily advantageous. The second, that it's effectively a deterministic argument, as the notion of free will and its societal consequences would have arisen in a way that was beyond our control but exerts a clear influence on what we consider our own personal decision-making processes. Personally, I think Mr. Dennett should've adopted the position that even if everything Mr. Sapolsky said was true, it could be used to reach the conclusion that biology and environmental factors affect only the range of options we have in making a decision (within which range we may yet have some very circumscribed free will) rather than determining with singular precision what that decision will be. Mr. Sapolsky's biological evidence comes largely in the form of correlations between environmental factors and behavioral likelihoods, and the implication seems to be that when all the factors are taken into account and all the probabilities are arrayed, a certain decision is inevitable (ps. this is 100% what my perfect AI model also thinks); however, the biological evidence isn't yet there to support that proposition directly (obviously, or there'd be no debate). All that said, though, Mr. Sapolsky is still the infinitely better arguer. Never even heard of that guy before today (or Mr. Dennett before this week). What a delight.

Sorry, one more. Starting at about 36:30, Dennett says (slightly paraphrased) "Once you become a free will agent, you now have the "talent" to resist becoming a puppet. You can maintain your autonomy in the face of other influences." I mean, c'mon, really? And what if you happen to get a lesion in your hippocampus or you regularly watch Fox News or you were born in this place or that to parents of this or that belief or this or that poverty level?. In all these `cases, there is indeed a puppeteer (preceding events) and you are indeed a puppet. That's just the hierarchical nature of things. Maintaining your autonomy in the stream of "other influences" is more about intelligence than free will. Dennett's stance does not at all align with determinism even though he calls himself a compatibilist. How can you be determined and defy the stream of events by your "talent". How can that not have been determined? By the way, if you want to understand what intelligence is, read Max Bennet's "A Brief History of Intelligence". While we're at it, if you want to understand what consciousness is, read Mark Solm's, "The Source of Consciousness". As an avid reader of evolution, consciousness, and free will for the past 20 years or so (but also a punter), these guys along with Sapolsky are the closest.

We have a moral collective responsability to contribute to the lives of the others in such ways as their web of deterministic circumstances to add elements of help for betterment of their lives. Even if we are adults we continue to change and to react as we live. There is no thing more beautiful than knowing that we made a diffeence on somebody's path. I don't belive in punishment, I belive in reflection and auto-theory. In my version of reality we as a community would create possiblity to hold space for someone to acknowledge their condition, gain access to coherence and reflect of one's own social biology. This act in itself is a smashing point able to generate hopefully, better outcomes like for example better, intimate, communal relationships favoured by the act of sharing. And debating. Me and my family practiced this in the past years, and the awareness of our cultural - natural - societal conditioning in similar, but also diverse ways was so libearting. Knowing that we did as much as we could with what we had, and that from where each came as an alteday complex web of influences scince the starting point, it was difficult to reach further in this society, is liberatory. There is a sense of ease, empathy and observation at this point. As well cohesion and understanding. For people like us and I am referring to you who reads this comment, to be alone is not an option. Gathering force around a sense of safe community is key to transformation. Maybe a sort of "free will" is possible, but in an orchestrated collective behvioral sudden decision to chenge the dominant systemic ethical, philosophical, ideological systems...
