  • This easy homemade cornbread recipe has crispy edges, a tender and moist crumb, and lots of flavor thanks to buttermilk and brown sugar. It's a classic southern side dish that goes with everything!
    RECIPE: preppykitchen....
Cornbread is one of the oldest “quick bread” style recipes in American cookery. It’s a southern staple but deserves a place on dinner tables around the country. You’ll like how easy and foolproof this recipe is but absolutely love the flavor of that delicious cornbread! A cast iron skillet makes the edge crisp and amazing but you can make this an any baking dish.

In Paraguay we do this but without sugar and with onions and it's called "paraguayan soup". Legend has it that a maid was making soup but she added too much corn flour so it turned out solid.

I make my cornbread much like you do. You're missing just one step, but it's an game-changer IMO. Just before you pour your batter in the skillet sprinkle a little cornmeal in there. It adds that extra crunchy, slight browned aspect to the exterior. It's a small step with big impact.

I made a pan of cornbread this afternoon in the small size of the 60 year old set of cast iron inherited from my husbands aunt. Nothing better on a cold evening .The addition of brown sugar to the recipe is unique I will definitly try it. I am going to pass this set on to my granddaughter who is ten years old. And she will likely pass it on to her child. I do enjoy your channel and you sir are a true gentleman.

Great recipe! This is a similar recipe to what my grandma used to do when I lived in Brazil. The difference is that we also add fennel seeds. The seeds give a total twist on the flavor. This with a good cup of coffee are one of staples for some evening family time back there. Its the kind of food that brings back some memories.
Some other variations back in Brazil are made with some cheese in the middle too. When you half bake it, the bread becomes really creamy on the middle.

I did add canned corn (drained and rinsed) and I used another channels cook temp/time cuz I don’t have a cast iron skillet (350 for 38 mins). I used a buttered square pan. I just made your recipe and put it in the oven, I'm so excited how it's going to turn out! My batter was way less liquidy though, and having no more buttermilk on hand I added some normal milk. As usually something probably went wrong in the conversion from cups to grams and mills. Would you consider putting the ingredients in grams and mills (consequentially) in your recipes as well? I did it before watching the video closely and overlooked that some conversions were in the video already, but they differed from conversions I found online.

I made this with whole milk instead of buttermilk, and bobs red mill polenta instead of finer cornmeal. The batter was thinner, but it came out delicious. The only issue was that I poured the batter directly into the center, and it stuck in the center during the dismount. It was still very good. The polenta makes it extra crunchy on the edges; highly recommended!

I love cornbread and haven't had it in many years. Never liked the box stuff. Definitely trying this.

I just made this and it's delicious --- and easy. I'm not into super sweet cornbread and the 1/4 cup brown sugar was _not_ too much, it was just right. And the buttermilk is a must, in my opinion.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been here but the OVEN with the gold and that gold rod with the pans hanging 😫👌 That’s custom richness right there

I had a cornbread craving two days ago, but I didn't realize I was out of corn meal! I had to use masa to finish the recipe!
