    I can see how it could feel jarring, but I don’t think Akemi’s character does change when she decides to sleep with the Shogun’s son. I think she was using the Madam’s advice and her acting skills to take back power. Up until she hears his stutter, she’s afraid because he has all the power over her, and she feels that she’s the only one at risk of being hurt. Then she finds a vulnerability, and realizes that a lot of the danger of her situation really comes from the Shogun’s wife and the shame she instills in her son. When we see her make the decision and put on her game face, I think she’s realizing that she’s been given an opportunity to “become his strength.” She’s getting him vulnerable so that she can make him feel that she makes him powerful, and also gains an advantage over his mother. She makes him feel weak, so if Akemi can control him while making him feel strong instead, he may choose her over his mother. This all serves her goal to live her life in her own way as much as she can, which at this point in the story, meant having the control over her wealth and security to influence her household and use it to create new opportunities for the disadvantaged women she knows.

    Great video! At first I was mad at the title "ALMOST Perfect" and was ready argue against it 😂 but the more you explained it, it made more sense. I do agree Mizu's ending was a little lackluster. Especially because she kept Fowler alive after everything AND leaves Japan. It didn't seem necessary and felt more like a season 2 ending with the next white man she wanted to kill. But overall, I LOVED this series and would rate it 9.5.

      Haha thank you! Yeah sorry to scare you with that title, feel like such a typical CZcamsr with clickbait titles sometimes, but I would also give it like a 9 or 8.5 out of 10, really happy with everything aside from a few things in the ending, but I'll definitely be tuned into season 2 when nit comes out

      There is a season 2 coming, that was the plan all along, just needed the viewing numbers to make it happen. She kept him alive because she needs him to find the people she really want's to kill.

      @@terranborn56adding onto to that I think it was a good writing decision to keep Fowler alive bc I feel like if she didn’t getting to London chances would be slim to none. There’d likely be no one else in Japan that could show her around London and if there was it’d take up unnecessary screen time.

    If you don't get the ending, then it's understandable why you think it's "almost" a masterpiece. Thank god the writers didn't create just another banal revenge story that ended with the "good guy" murdering the "bad guy."

      What's there to get? Mizu is still on the path to revenge to kill her 3 remaining potential fathers that's literally why she's going to London. She just plans to kill Fowler last

      I think the part that lost me in the ending was the very clear change in tone for what danger is for the protagonist.
      There were 1000s of armed rifle men ready to take out the emperor. Why did none of them fire while blue eye was attacking their leader? We have clearly seen that a barrage of projectiles is a death sentence.
      Next, the leader, a man shown to be a master swordsman, with incredible speed and strength, refused to cut down blue eye despite the many chances they had to do so, shown by the number of kicks they gave.
      Third, blue eye brought a gun, as good as a club, to a sword fight, when she herself knows these guns can be easily cut through. Meanwhile there were at least 3 swords lying around that room.
      Keeping him alive makes sense from a rather simplistic world view of being able to trust a mad man to be any use, and seemingly being able to get on a boat with one of the richest most hated men in the world on your own with no crew to sail half way around the world with no naval experience..... The man knows London, not the nautical path to London

    I also got some Jin vibes from Mizu. Love Samurai Champloo, one of my favourite animes.
    I wasn't too bothered by Akemi's 180, because she did learn that she could use the system for her own advantage and it was after that that she made her 180
    I was bothered by Taigan's because it seemed too rushed, as you mentioned we didn't get enough internal monologues but also literally 10 minutes before he does his 180 he's about to sacrifice his life to save the shogun and he does nothing other than rescue people from the fire between that and the 180. And that really didn't seem like a fufilling I'm done moment
    And agree the first 7 episodes are basically perfect and episode 8 was a bit of a let down

    Op, really played with fire with that title. I also think the show would benefit with more episodes in season 1. I even preferred it to be concluded in one season (with 16 or 20 episodes) . Just so Netflix wouldn't have the chance to cancel it after first season.

    Nice video! As for me, there are different things I didn’t like or understand about the show. First, Mizu mentioned that she already killed one man - Violet - but when was it? I absolutely don’t remember him. Second, as you said, in the final battle there were moments when she made huge mistakes like when she literally got a riffle but instead of shooting from it she used it as a stick to beat. And she was way too powerful sometimes without any fantastic explanation - especially in Fowler’s castle. Nevertheless, these are all small things and I really liked the show! Waiting for season 2

      @ghostofgames11  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Agree with everything you said! And that’s a good point about the rifle that I actually didn’t think about, I remember her picking it up but then she wound up not using it, I thought that was foreshadowing her potentially using it, I agree tho that I loved the show but had some minor hiccups in the finale, great comment!

    The ending for Mizu was unexpected but other than that everything was 100 percent. What makes it so perfect Is the fact that they made her human. She’s not invincible like captain marvel. She fights and gets bad injuries. She needs time to heal. IMO I have nothing bad to say about this show. Don’t make me fight you about that caption 😆

    Mizu was "nerfed" against fowler because she was so fullfiled with anger and hate(like the same in vinland saga with thorfiann askeladd). Onto that fowler is a really strong charakter as he said he spend 10 years on that island doing nothing besides training and japanese stuff.

      I can guess what will happen: With Fowler on a short leash, Mizu hunts her two remaining fathers amid the chaos of post-Cromwell England (depending on when they arrive)

  • @MarkG998
    @MarkG998 Před 6 měsíci

    I agree about them nerfing Mizu. They didn't need to do that and it made it anti-climactic. I like that they tried to make it seem that she's not a perfect fighter but then going too far in the other direction for the final fight was a poor decision.
    Unlike you though I do like Akemi's ending. I do feel like she quietly lost a lot of respect for Taigan and realised she wouldn't be happy with him long term. I think she actually likes the Shoganate's son, after sleeping with him. I think the sex scene was depicting how much she was genuinely enjoying him. She was a prrincess her whole life so to me that's another big reason she wouldn't live an ordinary life with Taigan. She wants the good life, she does want to have influence, she wants to be wealthy. I feel like she will use her wealth and power to help other women in need like those prostitutes. I think she thinks she can influence the way Japan can be ruled and she can't do that unless she marries the Shoganate's son.

    The ending for me was only not perfect because Fowler should have become her mentor, not her captive.
    He'd just pointed out she'd killed, endangered and displaced 1000s of people all in her act for revenge. He could have pointed out how their goals are aligned and if shes going to go up against bad guys in the West, she needs a bad guy to guide her.
    The perfect ending would have been for her and Fowler, whom she has no real fight against other than shes a bit racist, to develop a relationship like Arya and Dog from GoT.

    • @whythatspreposterous
      @whythatspreposterous Před 6 měsíci +1

      She's pretty single-minded in her obsession of killing all four of these dudes no matter what. It was kinda a massive deal that she spared him at all at that point despite the strategic advantage it gives her. (Just remember Taigen and Ringo's discussion of her strategy and logic skills earlier in the episode.)
      I think there well might be some evolution in their character dynamic towards what you suggest next season.

    • @itsalongwaytothetop100
      @itsalongwaytothetop100 Před 6 měsíci

      @whythatspreposterous her motives are quite wrong, but relatable.
      Her methods are wrong and the way she treats/mistreats or is simply ignorant to the motives/needs of her companions is frustrating and at one point, she has a life with them, a family and you are willing her to just stay. Although you know she can't.
      Somehow, this all makes her endearing and someone you are willing forwards.
      I especially loved the part where Fowler is the one to point out to her, that's she's basically burned alive thousands of people, just for revenge.
      That conversation at the end was awesome!
      I'd have preferred it and would love to see going forward, Fowler become a sort of mentor in London, she doesn't know the language or the rules or have any contacts, he's smart, strategic and their goals are semi-aligned.
      They could have a Dog/Aryia or Tywin/Aryia teype relationship, he could see something of him in her and let's face it, if you are going to be a bad guy, you need a bad guy.
      Also because of the time period, the UK & Ireland, The Caribbean and Hong Kong would be obvious locations where villainy thrives.
