  • Louise Lasser, Mary Hartman herself, gives her thoughts on her character. You can buy the complete series of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman at: www.shoutfacto...
In the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio, suburban housewife Mary Hartman seeks the kind of domestic perfection promised by Reader's Digest and TV commercials. Instead she finds herself suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune -- mass murders, low-flying airplanes and waxy yellow buildup on her kitchen floor. Mary's world is populated by a cast of misfits and oddballs: an impotent husband (Greg Mullavey), a sullen 12-year-old daughter (Claudia Lamb), bizarre parents (Dody Goodman and Philip Bruns), a man-eating younger sister (Debralee Scott), a country-singing best friend and her devoted husband (Mary Kay Place and Graham Jarvis), Fernwood's devious mayor (Dabney Coleman) and identical twins Barth and Garth Gimble (Martin Mull).

I had a crush on her also. I liked the way she looked and the way she had her hair. I was into partying when growing up and she seemed like a real party girl. I watched some of them Mary Hartman shows and they were pretty funny to me watching them. I also seen her on the one and last time on Saturday Night Live Show and boy she was like to whacked out on to many drugs. I thought maybe it was just a joke but it was really the way she was that day. She is one of the people band from SNL because of the way she acted doing the show. Will always love her thou.

Just like a soap opera I think. I heard sometimes they just improvised the conversations in the show rather than work off a script though.

      Hi Aidan,
There’s another difference you might take note of between Mary & Louise, which is that Mary is a fictional character in a TV show, whereas Louise is an actress & a real person.
If you continue to watch interviews with actors you will some day learn this one amazing fact about actors: Sometimes they play characters that have different accents than their own! It’s incredible! I know this will surprise you, but believe it or not being able to learn and use different accents is actually a major part of acting!!!
There are in fact, now sit down first……. ok? Sitting? such things as accent and dialect coaches & teachers for actors! REALLY!
Louise, (the real person) is from New York, the character Mary (the not real person) is from Fernwood Ohio, a fictional town. However Ohio, unfortunately, is a real state, & in the real state of Ohio they have a weird accent or two, but amazingly a heavy NY accent is not one of them!
So to conclude, while Louise the wonderful & loveable actress/person has a different accent, her character Mary was supposed to be from THE worst state ever, so Louise broke out some ACTING SKILLS to fool YOU into thinking Mary was a zonked out Ohio (or OiHO as Buckeyes sometimes misspell it) housewife.
However, Louise was too good and fooled YOU into thinking SHE was from the nutty state!

I can't find how much Louise was paid per this show? Does anyone know? She did 325 shows 22 minutes each which is like The Golden Girls or other 30 min sitcoms but instead of once a week, she filmed five days or shows a week non live studio, no fake laughs. In an 8 year series there are about 178 episodes so this show in two years put out what a 12 year series might so Louise & rest of cast had no real life most of the year since filming constantly or in study so what were they paid?
I see one other had idea as me to do Mary Hartman. I'm a writer so perhaps knight44441 could work with me together on a project. If you would like to be in front of the film we could do that with you more the Star. I am former model, been to acting school so have experience in that business if interested in working as a team or anyone else here. It wouldn't pay us anything at first.
As for those wanting to get the DVD be careful with dates. 2007 released season one which is edited like the 25 episodes on youtube. 2013 December I believe came out with all episodes unedited with special features which I believe you could get on Walmart online or if you can find it less expensive elsewhere since runs about 115 bucks there but is the real thing in full.
I believe everyone should email hulu to get them to play both seasons even though ya have to sit through commercials there.

MHMH was a parody of the soap opera genre which were/are on 5 days a week. Not unusual to write, produce, act in 325 yearly episodes, more the norm. It’s still done now/today on daytime, 2023.
