Love your content Paul - and that was a great opening comment: "Your mind never gets old, it's just your body that falls to bits" - I couldn't agree more!!
What about people with dementia their mind is falling apart but yes I agree he is a good content creator
That’s a great idea to keep your pack standing up! In 40+ years of backpacking I’ve never seen or thought of that :) Thanks!
Watched this in my lunchbreak during a very stressful time at work. So calm and peaceful and the sound of the oceanwaves put a smile on my face! Now I am ready to take on the rest of the week.
Just three weeks from now and I will be on my way of the Westhighland Way.
Thank you Paul for taking me with you on your trip to make me look forward even more!
What a spot. Not that my opinion is worth spit (to anyone else), but when I saw the spot (and the view) my immediate thought was that I'd want a shelter that made the most of the view: something to sit in, and upright in, with a door that opened to to the scenery, and a vestibule so I could cook and eat whilst soaking up the scenery. Somewhere to go back to, I'm guessing (o;
Nice vid, ta.
That's two of us then Barry!
That's what I love about the Lanshans. You can open up an entire side (or two)
Beautiful place, thank you for bringing us along!!!
Nice video as always! On bivy bags: I've got three, including a GoreTex and slightly wide one where I can get some stuff inside. The other two needs a tarp to work well. Actually the GoreTex one works best with a tarp too. They all end up weighing as much as the lightest tents (particularly if you use hiking poles anyway) and are extremely less comfortable in use. Agree the bivy bags are more stealthy, fits in slightly smaller spaces and would hold up better in a storm than the lightest tents. Still, it's very few use cases where I'd bring a bivy bag in stead of a tent.
Great video. Like you say, the mind never gets old. I'm 66 and still a teenager inside. Loved that pitch looking round the bay.
one of my latest stove set ups is bushbox ultralight with a superlight aluminium tin inside, that takes gel fuel or adding some wicking material - alcohol, also can be used as a wood stove if no fuel available, or as a hexi stove.
But crucial part of this set up is a windshield that I made from a very light titanium sheet and that fits in a pot. I use 1l titanium pot, and windshield goes snugly around it acting also as a support for extra stability.
Thanks Mr. Messner, for a candid, and forthright evaluation of ultra-lite camping gear. Somewhere between: " Travel light, no sleep at night " and bringing the Kitchen sink, there is a sweet spot which facilitates travel, and still permits a reasonable nights rest. I reckon it varies with each, individual rambler .. Cheers.
The trekking pole tip was worth the price of admission. Love the camping spot.
Hi Paul
Just remove the circular plate before you use it. That is only needed if you are burning twigs. The flames then don't spread out all over and I can boil enough water for a meal and coffee in three minutes.
And yes, I was doing it wrong for three months before I found out too...
"A nutter that loves kipping in a bivvy". Great line! I confess to preferring the comparative luxury of a tent. But I can see the appeal in good weather. What a cracking location. Fabulous post as always Paul. Many thanks.
Smart water bottles for the win! A very sturdy and lightweight bottle, plus they fit on the Sawyer Squeeze filters.
We have been converts to lightweight backpacking for a while. It's good to get your weight down for hiking as it makes it more enjoyable, but remember to take what makes you comfortable.
Such a lovely and peaceful spot. Thanks for bringing us along.
I love a bivvy myself. There's something nice about chucking your stuff down at the last minute and going to bed. I use a similar alcohol burner from Speedster Stoves. They do a custom windshield for your mug and it's really efficient as well as light. Decent price too.
Loved to see you somewhere completely different than your usual videos! I am always amazed people can sleep in those bivvy bags. I think I’d be so claustrophobic.
I think your experiences are valuable for wild camping keep up the good work.
Thank you Paul.
Thank you for the gorgeous sunrise!!
I enjoy all your videos. The hikes and camping in the highlands are beautiful. But I really appreciate your video here on the coast. I didn’t know that you had that beach option. I’m glad you did it!
A good Windshield saves a lot of fuel. You can build a big an leightweight one with aluminium foil and foldback clips as a fixation to the ground.
Bivvy bags, no lighter than a modern solo tent, less comfortable - but I so badly want to have a go with one!
Love it Paul. Back to basics 👌🏻
I know where that is!! Spent a few holidays just a little along the way when the kids were little 😁 lovely stretch of coast. Cheers for sharing Paul, David 👍
I’m also totally sold on a quilt now.. I wont go back to a claustrophobic bag again
Ditto 👍
Superb mate!! You can’t beat a coastal camp 👏🍻
Stunning location mate, but as a Sea Kayaker/ camper I am biased and love coastal camping as much as any other
Always good content. But this video was fabulous. Great cinematography, advice, scenery, gear, and importantly philosophy. Very inspiring. Hats off to you. Ps. I like the van stuff too.
Lovely opening shots this video. Very arty! Keep them coming Paul 😃
Such a beautiful and peaceful morning:). Thanks for sharing!
A great relaxing vlog , thank you!
Lovely footage Paul, mind & body, yeah defo... Looks B E A U tiful...! I've done 3 wilds now in some challenging weather during Feb & this Vid just gives me more inspiration...👍👍👍
thanks for the beautiful sunrise
Love your videos Paul Messner…your such a funny bugger…always good to see your gear & how you use it. So nice to see you on a coastal walk…stunning sunrise. What I was really interested in was watching you get into that sleeping bag…you left that out. Would have been some interesting light entertainment. I’m truely captivated by your videos, they are much appreciated
All the best from Australia 🦋
I do a lot of coastal camping. I use the orx bobcat as not only does it cope with coastal winds ,but can sit up in it and enjoy the beautiful scenery in all weathers, under cover ..Me personally i wouldnt use these ultralight lanshan type tents on the open coast. They too thin and make lots of noise in the coast blustery winds, and may even blow down.. I learned that lesson a long time ago..
There’s real value in this type of video Paul. Thanks and well done. Appreciate the info.
That said, I’m usually at 25-30kg, even for the 1000m summits. Love it. But I’m weird, and very much a knuckledragger 🤣
I packed less than that to live in India for 6 months!
do you carry a caravan?
@@IWalk-zl7xy I do collect rocks yes but no not that 🤣
@@carlh4747 I did a month in India. Carried nothing but sun screen and loo roll
@@outdoorting I’d try
Loved the video. I feel very relaxed now. Beautiful spot. 👍
Thank you very much 😊
Lovely video Paul … from the opening shot through the surf to the awesome sunrise you captured the essence of what wild backpacking is all about … you also had some realistic advice on alcohol stoves and the balance between weight and comfort… thank you for sharing your adventure and advice … ATB Dave Mc
Completely agree about the mind never gets old but the body falls to bits ☺️☺️
Nice spot Paul, you gonna share it with us all or keep it all to yourself 😆 Yorkshire coast I reckon but hmmm whereabouts? 🤔😁
What a stunning location to spend a night!
Stunning campsite!
Great spot mate, just down from speeton, Looking at Filey and Flamborough head! Can’t beat a coastal camp, top video mate
Good video, thank you! Such a beautiful spot too
As a fellow camping youtuber, I love your videos!
When ever I plan a camping trip you always seem to make a video about it before I even think about packing my bag!.. Sheffield psychic
I’m in the minority as I like dx stove. Never use the power plate as it makes it burn super fierce, even in sub zero temps it’s too much! Then you have the choice of speed or efficiency, for speed use both wind shields and for efficiency just the upper - like with the other burner on the vid. I cut a foil windbreak that I keep in the cup also, however it’s no Trangia in the wind! Great vid, makes me want to dig out the bivvy!
Good tips Paul. I use the Alpkit Pipedream 200 which is lightweight and a full zip - perfect for a summer bivi.
How beautiful..... I too have a bivvy (Stratosphere) and find the idea of it is often better than the reality!!
When I was speccing up my gear to (eventually!) do the WHW I looked at bivvys, but there was no real advantage IMO. The cost and weight of a decent bivvy and a tarp vs the Naturehike Cloudup-1 that I ended up with didn't stack up, I'd rather have the extra space inside for my gear given Scottish weather. Heading off on the Clyde Walkway for an overnighter this weekend.
Great lil spot that mate ..thanks for taking us along ATB Coops 👍🏻🍻
Can't believe you managed to find your favourite beer on the beach 😎 who'd have thought that 😀 👍
Paul, there is a better way to configure your Japanese flame thrower by placing the burner in the top section of the stove bringing the flame much closer to the pot. Ditch the flame spreader. I get 10 minutes burn from 30ml of fuel boiling 300ml water in 7 minutes or less. Great video. Cheers!
Great location and really nice sunrise.i kinda get the lightweight set ups but I only see it been useful if you're doing some big milage over multi days.for me it's a tent every time and a few other comforts and I just accept the extra weight
Love the content dude! Career shift well worth it!
Always such great videography in your videos!
9:13 look how little you are! Bet that was a reyt climb for that shot. I almost missed it 🧐 much better than a walk by shot 😆
Thanks Paul
Loved the video Paul!
Cheers for that Paul 👍
Good video Paul....wish I could go lightweight especially on the multiday hikes but I accept the extra weight for more comfort...But totally understand why people do go lightweight..
.👍🏻😃👍🏻
Great video and sunrise I've got a alcohol stove They are better than the penny stove I've used the alcohol stove for a picnic made tea thanks for a great video see you on the next video 👍
You've got that right Paul!Your body is what falls to bits. Do not believe, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.' Not so unless you are a teeny bopper! What doesn't kill you when you are 70 just creates a 'New Normal' that you have to deal with.
That's so true, in my mind I'm still 18, though my 51 year old body doesn't agree ha-ha. Lovely place you camped, oh and you made me buy a jetboil summit pan through one of your QnA vids 😆, I got a good deal, £19.99 and I've past it onto the group I'm in, a couple of the group have bought them now and saved a small fortune. I'll be using it on a camp in Llandeilo with Mr wildwales and others. Nice video btw, great channel you have 🤙
keep on going mate!
Stunning scenery mate and good tip on the walking poles. Great spot that one! Si
I think I love you ❤️
@@norman4787 lol, me or the Mes?
@@SimonOutdoors Paul
Another great production from you! Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts. Now you made me curious about the backpack you were carrying. Can you tell more about it?
I recently gave up the sack for inflating my sleeping pad after a trip into the Grand Canyon where the wind was howling. A buddy was using a small pump that allowed him hands free inflation while the pad was secure inside the tent. It also allows you to do other things while the pad inflates. The pump is just over 1oz heavier than the sack and worth it’s added weight IMO!
Paul, your video quality has improved greatly now you have time to focus on it. Nice one!
Swam in that very water last june for sunrise..
Its a stunning part of the country , all the way up 't' north
Lovely place your at Paul 😊
I think the Stormin Norman cone is a much better stove system Paul. Still any stove is better than no stove:) That looked a lovely spot to camp.
When I walked the Wainwright coast to coast I used those smart water bottles
I'd be terrified something would flatten me during the night while I was sleeping. A JCB, a horse, a boulder, a falling tree, anything really.
It would be even worse if you had that sleeping bag paul has that the zipper thats very short, six inches..😮
Nice location that. I haven't visited any coastline for a long while but I hope to do something like a North Devon trail this year. I've got into bivy camping myself but use the much heavier XL Dutch Army bivy. I mainly use it for the stealth element though.
Any fool can be uncomfortable...cold ...cramped ..wet ...etc etc ...sometimes ultralight ain't right 😕
Agreed
I liked the look of the Rab Bivvy 👍
A lot of American ultralighters use the 1L Smartwater bottles but we can't get those here. I use the 1L Aqua Carpatica bottles from Tesco, they've got a tall and slim profile so you can fit two either side of most rucksacks if you need to. The downside is the thread isn't compatible with the Sawyer Squeeze (I don't use that anyway), but on the plus side the opening is large enough to pee in 😂
오 전망좋은 넓은 해변에서 백패킹 멋집니다. 영상 잘봤어요^^
Yesssiiiii Mr Messner pussycat ! Cracking video mate, massively helpful for my gear and planned trips etc along with your other Chanel been great for them reasons too! Loved this one, just waiting for you to cut them shapes 🕺! Yesssiii
Great video mate 👍🏻
Beautiful campsite! Great video as always. When you showed the sleeping bag's tiny zipper I immediately wondered how on earth you were going to get into it inside the bivy. Darn near impossible I'm guessing. Like trying to squeeze toothpaste back into the tube? :)
the lightest I've ever camped involved a piece of tarp and 2 trees and a couple pegs and bungies
Another cracking vid Paul. Not a massive fan of hooped bivis tend to use my British army goreyrx bivvy bag and a tarp set up, just a bit to claustrophobic for me. Loving the camera work, your really nailing it mate. Was that the Lincolnshire coast by any chance. I've never done a coastal camp so a rough steer on the location would be very helpful. Rob
Thanks Paul. I've been interested in bivvy camping for a while, not sure if it's all it's rated. My bro' likes it. But you may have a point about a lightweight tent instead which would be light, rommier and still pretty compact to boot. But this was a very interesting vid, so thanks again. Keep up the good work.
A stunning location 👍
bivy camping is pretty damn fun and the kit is cheap, but for 2 people it doesn't make a huge amount of sense. 2 bivy bags you're looking at 800g-1kg, plus a tarp for lets say 500g in case it rains. OR you can get a Slingfin portal- 1100g, masses of space, fantastic weather protection and lighter. I know where I'd rather be sleeping after a long day (and indeed I have done).
10 minute drive from my house, mint spot!
Nice video Paul! i like it
I wouldnt get up that early. I pitch up late but get out of bed/bag when I'm ready. ⛺🤣
Cheers Paul, good vlog. Bivvy camping isn't for everyone and trying to squeeze 19st into an 8inch gab in the dark isn't my idea of fun.
Nice vid Paul 😊👍
Bloody hell! Messner at sea level - whatever next! ;-)
Bet it was fresh on the beach at Filey. I know it was when I went out in it on my bike. Lucky the coastguard didn’t get called with the head torch half the way up the cliff 🤣🤣 on this episode I’ll be calling the coastguard out 🤣
The Brewdog gods were generous with their gifts. Stunning in 4k Paul, looked like a fun camp.
Nice one Paul cracking spot for a camp mate I think some people must really suffer and be uncomfortable when trying to go so lightweight I carry a heavy load sometimes over 30kg but a lot of that's tools ie axe saw kinife water food etc atvb jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Enjoyed this Paul because it’s not for me sooner spend a few mins more to set the tent up OMO
no freaking way! your in my local stomping ground n thats one of my spots!! stoked you brought your lightest set up too, you must know how the locals roll 😉 awesome video some beautiful shots.. how you enjoying the atom?
Did you notice any difference in the wind chill/environmental factor between the hills/mountains versus the coast? Would you bring any extra gear next time you do a coastal camp? Plus nice video as always, beautiful place!
