- How well does a Late 2012 Mac Mini work in today's environment?
I5-3210M 2.5GHz Dual Core CPU, 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM (dual channel), 500GB HDD.
If you upgrade to 8GB (2 sticks 4GB DDR3) and an SSD drive, you got yourself a decent office/web PC for daily work, and it can even livestream on OBS. This is a good entry point to MacOS as it supports up to Catalina (but I stick to Mojave for 32-bit app compatibility)
I stream on Twitch too:

Bought one with the 2.3 i7, upgraded to 16gb ram, an SSD, and installed Big Sur. I love it for daily tasks
Nice and compact, great for clean desktop
I have the same one with i7 processor with 16gb ram and 1 TB fusion drive . How did you upgrade to Big Sur , as per Apple Catalina is lthe last available upgrade for this Mac mini ?
@@mrspeedracer0076 look up ‘open core legacy patcher’ it’s a way to install a newer OS on unsupported Macs
@@midnightmythos thanks a lot!
Thanks for the video review! Just bought this with 8gb ram for $150 and I can’t wait
These little mac minis are very well built, hope it serves you well
My main computer at the moment is a Mac Mini with 2 x 1TB SSDs, 16GB RAM and core i7 CPU. Runs great! I have less than $300 total invested. They are great little computers.
Thats great. here for the same price you can only get i5 2012 base model, used macs are not cheap
@@joe_my On facebook market I'm seeing them go for $180-200 regularly. That's pretty cheep.
@@3.andi.3 Nice!
I’ve had mine already lol, now I’m starting to use it again. And it’s still kind of quick (turbos up to 3.1ghz), even with only 4gig of ram. Can’t wait to upgrade it, all the way up to 16gig. As of today, I’m contemplating on getting the new Mac mini m1 that’s out right now. And stack that one ☝️ right on top of the old one lol. Talk about saving space, wow lol.
The new M1 Mac Mini is great too but I love the new iMac colours
I know it is kind of off topic but does anyone know of a good website to watch newly released series online?
Very useful and still fast
i used it, verry good
NICE VIDEO. THANK YOU. MINE IS i7 2.3 16 GB RAM 1SSD 1T 1HDD 1T AND AT LAST I THINK MOJAVE IS THE BEST OS FOR THIS RIG
I run Mojave too, its just nice for the age of this iMac.
We got same mac mini i5 variant, i maxed mine to 16gb ram and put SSD and HD as well, OS resides on the SSD.
Yes, I have upgraded to 8GB ram, and change to SSD, now it can run nice and smooth for everyday tasks for light usage!
I have the iMac mini WITH a hard drive-(gonna change to SSD) even with the hard drive it still is FAST...16 GB memory i7 2.3-gonna boot Big Sur to it soon...DOES FCPX VERY WELL WITH 4K videos
Good to hear, with 2 more cores and lots more ram, it would certainly work much better. I'm kinda eyeing the M1 macbooks at the moment.
Thought you couldn’t upgrade to big sir on 2012?
4GB ram running catalina is bad, you must have at least 8GB RAM to run it smoothly
I hate my 2012 Mac mini server, it always overheats, and I tried applying new thermal paste, still gets hot on any load. the cooling fan is running. I gave up on it and bought a 2012 mac pro cheese grader, and now it runs cool. I think the mac mini doesn't have enough cooling
I guess at some point, your hardware will probably get too old and start to give problems, im glad you got a good cheese grater set, i love those casings.
What is SSD? You referred to upgrade but I can’t recall you explaining what SSD means.
SSD is the storage of the unit, normally it has a (slow) hard disk, SSD are generally several times faster than a traditional hard disk
Im using mac mini 2012 upgraded to 256 ssd and 16 gb of ram im using my mac mini since 2013 and still buttery smooth, you should upgraded your mac mini
im liking the new colourful iMac haha
Can it do 1080 60fps video editing in I movie?
I did not try but with the base spec and that 2-core processor, i wouldn't think it would be good.
With 16 gigs of ram and an SSD, you can even edit 4k videos really...
Which port connects the Mac Mini to a screen?
There is a hdmi port on the mac mini for connection to a monitor
Got mine at 140 bucks with original apple wireless keyboard
That is very cheap! nice catch.
My budget 15k i buy new pc aur go with 2012 mac mini
but is it wroth it in 2023....???
or even in 2024. ????
For an 11 year old machine, probably not, i think for used Apple computers, 5-8 years old is a sweeter spot
Can edit videos
If you upgrade to 8GB ram, it could probably handle some 720p editing. Anything higher, you should look for 4-core processor models and more ram
What don't you just go and sleep
No, because its not supported anymore.
I wouldn't use it as my main rig, but am using it now as a secondary PC.
Not supported? It runs Catalina, and Catalina is still supported... and probably will be for at least two more years
@Pedro Alves Not only that,, theres this little thing called "bootcamp" where you can install the latest version of Windows 10.
You can patch it to the latest version for many years to come!
