Bless your soul for listing all your sources, I'm doing a HUGE project on millinery history and this was an excellent source. Given how high-quality and in-depth this video is, it's very disappointing that it has so few views. May the algorithim be in your favor in the future. :)

I personally am deeply grieved hats have become a special occasion thing only. Ive been doing Victorian and Georgian millinery for about 15 years now and love it - just LOVE it. However I also do a lot of 20th C history bounding, and make hats for the 1940's thru to 1970 for these events. However - after a lot of thinking, Ive found a middle ground for everyday wear - and that is the headband. Ive seen Kate wearing a variety of very classy headbands, and if like me, you have long hair - headbands can be pulled off really well - as we want an "item" to hold our hair back - theyre seen as functional. However - the shape of my head is such that i find very few commercial headbands comfortable - but im working on that. But in the meantime - i will buy cheap ones and decorate them with left over vintage trims, or in ways that fit the place im am going. SO i think we can focus on headbands for women

At least for the hats worn by Grenadier's in the military of the 18th century, the hats they wore were largely an intimidation thing. They'd pick the largest and tallest soldiers from the army to serve as grenadiers, and putting on a tall shako would add to the apparent height and make them even more intimidating to the enemy they would be charging at. Heavy smoke was also a major issue on the battlefield, so flashy clothing, including hats, made it easier to pick out units and identify the officer who would be in charge.

Phygian caps (the Greek hats) are pronounced "FRIDGE-ee-in" (or "FRIJ-ee-in") with a "j" sound. Great presentation!

Wow, this was such an interesting and well made video. I needed to know more about hats in order to write a story and this was extremely helpful

Love this! What a great idea for a video. I'd love to see you do a series where you focus in on specific eras and get more into details. Like say, "Hat trends of the 1920s" because common conception is that every woman on the planet wore the cloche style to the exclusion of all else, and there are so many more fabulous styles from the time!
Also, i think you pronounce "Phrygian" FRIDGE-ee-un.

Thanks for the clarification as I knew it was being said wrongly. Glad you’ve enjoyed, I’m going to look into how to do specific eras.

@@Jwhmillinery A librarian who's part of the Costube community is working on a video about how to find royalty-free images of historical fashion plates, once that comes out it would be super helpful for your reference images, if you do specific eras!

That would be super helpful!! I found that book I mentioned online and it was a free download. So i downloaded it
Turns out it’s not actually a free download and had been uploaded by someone else!

The military hats were not ceremonial :) it goes very much in line with how war and the view of battles before the 20ths century. Battles were a show off, you didn't have camo, to hide from your enemy was seen as a sign on cowardness, that is why bigger and balder is to be favoured.
