The University of Texas Agricultural and Mechanical was a middle of the pack school in the Big 12 and they're a middle of the pack school in the SEC. They'll have a good year on occasion and beat some good teams, but never be dominate year in and year out.
The A&M does not stand for "Agricultural and Mechanical"
When the great bear Bryant coached there, he had a 25, 14, 2 record. He won 60% of the games played. It's not a phenomenal record for one of the best football coaches that ever lived.
I have watched A& M football for over 60 years. They just can't get over that hump between greatness and mediocracy. I don't know why. I don't think they will ever be great. They do have a phenomenal academic school, but great football teams are not their thing.

I think he will eventually miss coaching. Taking a sabbatical year would probably do any coach some good. Travel, de-stress, self-reflect on how he did, etc. He will still have suitors in a year. He is only 58, and has a national title on his resume. Plus, Texas A&M has averaged 5 losses per year this century. They last won a conference title in 1998. Expectations don't match reality there. He could have a second act, or maybe it is a third after FSU.

Why don't these universities have a performance requirement in order to get paid the contract. Meaning , if they get fired for underperforming, the contract is voided. A severance package could be paid, but it's ridiculous to pay a losing coach millions to not coach.
Why would a successful coach leave his current job, where presumably he has built up equity among the fan base by what he built there, to take a job where the money isn't better, for a longer time, and guaranteed?

Not really comparable. Riley is a great offensive coach and just needs to get a quality DC at USC. He was a game away from the playoff last year without a defense and won 10 games every year at OU.
Jimbo just wasn't the guy, but has the best agent in the world. The contract extension he got in 2021 was the worst extension ever given in the history of college football and Ross Bjork should be fired along with Jimbo.

There will be other openings and coaching for him. Tbh, he should have stayed at FSU after winning a natty 10 years ago. Now that he's terminated from A&M, they still have to pay him the remainder of his contract. At least for now he can take a break from coaching! This will be tough for AggieLand without a quality coach.
He can become coach for the Michigan Wolverines after they fire Harbaugh. When Michigan gets in the natty playoff against teams with winning records, they will become dismembered.

Jimbo was never able to recruit a qb at AM like he did with FSU. FSU he had Ponder, Manual, Winston, and Francois. At AM he only had Mond who was already at AM when he got there.
He recruited a quarterback that left in the portal and played in the natty for Oklahoma. He recruited them but couldn't keep them.
The Maroon Money grew tired of Jimbo’s progress. They paid a ton to upgrade talent only to get the same results.

Wow, this is huge news for college football fans. Jimbo Fisher was supposed to be the savior of Texas A&M, but he failed to deliver on his promises. He got paid a fortune to recruit well, but he couldn’t develop his players or win big games. He deserved to be fired, and I hope the Aggies can find a better coach soon. Maybe they should go after Urban Meyer or Deion Sanders.

Well this is the new trend it’s not just about Winning it’s about how u look when u win are u dominating teams that you should be beating. Are you keeping the games, competitive in games that you just might lose this is the new generation of coaching and what your gonna have to deal with from owners,GM’s,and athletic directors as well for college Jimbo is a decent coach he’s had his good moments bt he’s never established himself in that upper echelon of coaching trees and coaching rankings do I think he’ll get another chance hell yea another team will hire him bt does he change the trajectory of how you’re gonna look at that university and that football team no he’s not one of those type of coaches in my opinion

I wouldn't call it a "good" season but the Aggies are at least going to get some kind of bowl game and with a chance at two more wins before that, they could even get a semi-decent one.
Firing Jimbo was inevitable, but I think it would have made a lot more sense to do it only after they had a rock-solid replacement lined up and after the end of the season. Firing a coach after a win is a bad look that is unlikely to attract anyone you actually want to fill the role.

Year in and year out aTm brags about their recruiting and every year they excel in mediocrity. In all fairness, you can say the same thing about the University of Texas. Overrated, underachieving. It would be interesting to take the entire football expenditures, every dime for coaches salaries, travel, recruiting, equipment, student scholarships, uniforms, stadium maintenance/expansion, etc, include alumni "off the books contributions", EVERYTHING, over the last 10 years divide that by the team victories during that time period to get a cost per win amount. I'll bet it would be a staggering number.
@@davebryant8050 I don't really agree, it's mostly the endowments and alumni donations footing those costs. Networks bid on the rights so they set what ultimately becomes cable rates. I dumped cable tv several years ago, went to streaming, less than half the cost

Yeah, the timing seems kind of strange, coming off a blowout win. They should've waited until the beginning of next year and saved themselves a few million.
Jimbo was TAMU’s answer to who they thought would be another Nick Saban. They snagged him away from Florida so fast that they failed to actually look into the program to see the cracks that were a bit more than surface blemish by that point. Texas oil money fitted Jimbo with a new pair of fancy custom Larry Mahan’s, put him in a very nice home, and gave him a salary that in short order would grow to a grotesquely fat cash cow. But Texas royalty had picked up the wrong end of the branding iron, and instead of letting go they decided to throw an obscene amount of money into a new contract in ‘21, pretending that money would buy them what they wanted if they just put enough of it onto the pile. It did not; it wasn’t going to. A huge stadium with one of the loudest fanbases, one of the highest paid coaches in all of college football, and all they’ve got to show for it is a less than average CFB team with a glaring losing streak. Yeah, that cash cow will feed Jimbo very well for a long, long time.

Well...Jimbo had moderate success there. He's got a winning record. They won the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago. He plays in the SEC. Every coach is gonna have trouble succeeding as long as Alabama is there. I don't think it makes much success to fire Jimbo. It's not a foregone conclusion that this will vault Texas A&M to the next level. College Football is leveling out the playing field with NIL and transfer portal. I feel like eventually they would have broken through and got somewhere. The smart thing would have been to go back to the Big 12 lol

Ross Bjork knew firing Jimbo looked really bad for him. But he had to do it for all risk. That man definitely has some balls. I envy Texas A&M has gut to fix the problem. I remember Texas couldn't do anything under the infamous AD Steve Patterson who brought in terrible football coach, terrible basketball coach, terrible work environment etc. That Steve Patterson was a parasite to Texas.
