I Just Ordered a Motorbike With Pedals?! The New 30mph Engwe M20

  • I'm always looking for fun and interesting bikes to build up and film, so when Engwe recently got in touch and ask if I'd like to try out the M20, I said yes! (even though technically I can't ride it on a road here). They've kindly gifted this bike to me for free for the purposes of creating this video, however there's no expectation that I say or do anything specific and all opinions shared are my honest review. I'm not being paid by them or anyone else and the intention of this video - as with my other bike build videos - is simply to entertain. Because an e-motorbike with pedals sounds kind of fun, right? Hope you enjoy it!

Such a shame the laws are so behind the technology. Last year I hired an e-scooter via an app in Barcelona and it was great fun. Perfect option for getting around the city, short commute or last mile things. One of these would replace a car for so many people.

in germany you can ride these legally. you just need insurance and a driver's license for a moped.will cost around 50€ per year.
I get the wish to just drive it, but it's basically a scooter and can do a lot of damage in untrained hands. it handles very differently than a bike.

What you need is a small battery with little current to do only the voltage multiplication for a higher speed.
You can be up to speed and use a toggle switch if you're not on a hill it shouldn't even get warmer.
Always check for warm wites or circuits under a laod to minimize any risk.

Legally, a moped is defined as a motorcycle with an engine no bigger than 50cc and a maximum speed of 28mph.
Originally, a moped - meaning ‘cross between motor and pedal’ - started out as a very basic motorcycle with pedals. Most mopeds are automatic and they’re usually the first step in learning to ride a motorbike.
You can learn to ride a moped at 16 and as long as you complete your compulsory basic training (CBT) you can ride on public roads with L plates. Bear in mind that your CBT certificate is only valid for two years; so if you want to carry on riding you’ll need to either take your AM moped licence or complete another CBT course.
It will require a DVLA approved number plate, insurance and possibly tax to ride it on a public road.

That was not "Off road where technically it is allowed to be used" a footpath or bridleway is still a "road" riding a motorised vehicle on a bridleway or footpath simply adds an extra offence, yes in fact it's worse than riding on a road which has vehicular right, the only difference is that you are far less likely to be seen or caught, the only legal place to ride one is on private land with the land owners consent (and I'd make sure you have written consent).

These bikes are all over Ireland. There is a huge grey area about pedal assist and throttle assist here. Some of these things can hit 60kph which puts normal cyclists at risk of being rearended. Personally a licence should be issued for something this powerful. Nice video though Jimmy 👍🇮🇪

I disagree , just got one yesterday and it definitely does not have enough power to where it should be registered, top speed is 28 mph and I feel like that’s way to slow to be on the road with cars. I respect your opinion though! Much love.

i disagree with the idea of these things having no legal requirements, as many people seem to wish, and I live in the US- San Jose, in particular, where electric moped thingies like this are pretty popular. here ebikes can cruise at 28mph legally.
do we really want beginners and non-cyclists/motorcyclists immediately able to do those speeds without any time to develop safety skills? Most of the riders of these types of things are NOT- SERIOUSLY NOT- experienced cyclists and/or motorcyclists. I know this because i see them pulling bad moves everyday, like riding opposing traffic, or in the sidewalk, with no helmets...
i also ride motorcycles and found the license tests to be very useful for cycling in addition to motorcycling. a couple of the questions on the written test were about bicycle laws too. what downside is there to requiring licensure if the roads are already so dangerous because of idiot cagers?

yeah but the training you have to do in europe to be able to drive 50cc mopped is a joke (i had one when i was 15), on the exam day i've burned a stop sign but still had my "license" (as long as you paid they just give it to you) and in no mean i've learned anything more that what my dad explained to me when i was 6 riding a bike for the first time with him on road.
it's just easy cash for driving school and gouvernement (taxe)

If you're off road but on a public right of way you are still illegal. You can only ride this on your own private land or the private land of someone else with their consent. I think you should try to register it as a moped. if you have a full driving licence you are covered for a moped. You will need tax and insurance too. If we get too many of these things being used illegally it will have a negative impact on the users of legal ebikes and reduce the chances of getting the current ebike legislation improved (to allow more power, speed, throttles etc.).

The illegal on roads but alowed off-road as far as I'm aware. Are you UK based? Do you know the rules? I tried to work out if it was possible to register it as a modped, tax it, insure it, put plates on it, etc A legit e-motobike that I would use for commuting. But it's IMPOSSIBLE to work out the laws and what you can and can't do. So frustrating. Any knowledge that you have to part with would be appreciated.

    • @AndyRides
      @AndyRides Před rokem

@@JimmidNicholls I appreciate that you did mention several times about the legality. I’m from the UK, I see these ridden on the road; often flying along bike lanes. My understanding is that off road would only be on green lanes where cars are also allowed, or private land, Is that where you road? I see these bikes being sold and very little is made of where they can be ridden in the literature. Very few people would have access to an environment where these would be legal. Maybe I over reacted to your video, but if the general public see these as bikes, rather than motorbikes; it causes more friction. Look at how the media reported Simon Cowell’s crash on an electric motorbike; it was described as an ebike.

  • @volkanbekdas

Yes, you could spend thousands of dollars on an eBike czcams.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ and get something much higher quality. However, if you're looking for a basic model to try out eBiking this is a great choice. The assembly is easy as far as bikes go (took about an hour for me to do, I'm not an expert). All tools needed are included. I added the plastic mud guards you see and a more comfortable seat. The other reviews are correct that you're probably going to want a better seat (Giddy Up! Bike Seat is what I got - super comfortable). The battery easily handles a 2-4 hour ride if you add some of your own pedal power. I haven't even gotten it up to top speed yet - it is very fast. Components are not top of the line, but decent for the price and work just fine. It works great on dirt roads and singletrack and pavement although too heavy to do tricks or any serious technical mountain biking. I'm looking forward to using it a lot over the summer. Tons of fun!
