Heart-stopping moment: Cat protects deer fawn from 6 foot snake!

  • OK, so, wow, this one is really crazy! We get to see tons of wildlife on our farm because it is quite remote and not near any other homes. So, on this day we were filming a new deer fawn that was bedded right near our home in the woods. We were documenting the all day bed down of the fawn. At one point our cat decided to go and check out the fawn. She has befriended deer in the past and has actually played with deer.. But this time something was different!!! I was filming the interaction of the cat investigating the deer fawn. We even tried calling her back so as to leave the fawn alone, as spooking it would have put it in danger being up on its feet on its own. So, as I filmed this whole interaction there was actually a 5 or 6 foot rat snake that was moving towards the fawn. The cat saw this and instinctively tried to intervene and protect the fawn from the huge snake! Grab some popcorn and your favorite beverage because this one is a nail biter. this is ALL REAL LIFE stuff that we document when we see it. I enjoyed this video. It doesn't matter if the snake was truly a threat to the fawn. The cat thought it was and that was the point of the video. You have an exceptional cat! Thank you for sharing this.

The cat did not think the snake was a threat to the fawn. Cats will put their ears back and approach anything that rustles on the ground smaller than they are. The cat was just being a cat - not a hero. Too much human projection going on here.

The cat was just checking out the snake, and then left when its curiosity was satisfied. Agreed, just a cat being a cat, no interest in the fawn at all.

My dog Duke collects eggs everyday from the hen house, and no, he don't break them usually.
However, he kills every chick/egg eating Snake he encounters in the hen house. He has been bitten several times by Copperheads and has built up an immunity to their toxin. Old Duke,
is one of those once in a lifetime dogs I was fortunate to have, he died at the age of 13 years. R.I.P. old friend.

Once she felt the fawn was no longer in danger she left - Animals senses are a million times stronger than ours. Not only did the cat feel, hear, and smell the mother deer coming back through the woods before anyone saw her, SO did the Snake!!

My past cats would go for the snake's tail until it got terrified and ran (for a snake) off. Depending on how hungry or big the snake was, there were sometimes a lot of back and forth battling till the cat won and the snake quickly left. Cats can be very good watchdogs!

Much ado about nothing, that safari adventure music is a hoot! Our cat grabbed 2 non venemous snakes from our back yard and took them into the garage through her little kitty door. Luckily my wife walked into the garage and saw them. I put on gloves and put them back in the bushes where they crawled away, the cat hadn't bitten them too deeply so they could still flee. We locked her inside for 20-30 minutes so they'd get far enough away not to be retaken, LOL.

Not really a waste...you got to watch a fawn and kitten survive a hungry snake and listen to some da da duhhhh music...lol!!
But seriously did you see how twitchy the cat was to where her skin/fur on her hind area jumped several times!??! I think it was likely in reaction to vibrations/energy from the snake, now that is cool!!! I wondered if it would get to the the point of the snake lunging, but nope! Just rejoice that the fawn and kitty survived and the snake went away hungry, it moved on and hopefully found a rat like it was supposed to eat anyway!!!

Fascinating. Great catch, even if you didn't realize immediately what you were filming. Cats are incredibly smart, probably more smart then they get credit for... granted your cat also has an intriguing relationship with wild deer, never heard of such a thing!
Also, way to respect BOTH wild animals. Snakes are like pit bulls, many folks give them a bad rep right off the bat. These large constrictors (rat, king, bull/pine snakes etc) control the rodent population so well-- and like the majority of snakes in our country are harmless.

Absolutely, Aland! I allow three of these rat snakes to live on my property. They keep the vipers and mice away mice and occasionally eat my chicken eggs (which is a small price to pay). Lately in this triple digit heat, one has come up to my porch for water, and gets a drink of cold water straight from a can that I hold to his mouth. They are extremely used to us and we do not touch them or try to "pet" them. I measured the shed skin from one of them and it measured out 78 inches.

The snake sensed the heat from the fawn and went over to investigate. If a snake thinks that the target is too large, then it will back off and leave. It was looking for a mouse, maybe a young bird out of the nest, or another small rodent. Then the snake made advancements on the cat, again sensing the heat but not knowing the size of it. Sooner or later the snake will get lucky. That is what it does.

Her body language, clearly tells me, she is neither in attach / hunt mode, nor in a joyful situation. She had a task and I really want to agree that she had an intention of helping the young one, cuz she new the snakes are dangerous. If you see enough of wildlife, you see always nursing parents, try their best (At times even at the cost of their own life) to divert the bigger invader to their offspring's and nest, away from that location. And they do all they can, to achieve this. That is all that I see here, only she wan not the mother of this child but indeed a mother at heart.
