Same 😅 I think that’s where the clashing really began. But I love seeing videos like this that shows not all projects go where you want. I’ve tossed out plenty of paintings myself because I couldn’t make them look right
I’m about to try doll customizing for myself for the first time, and I really wanted it to look good. Some advice that helped me was the “you gotta break a few eggs along the way” saying, and it reminded me of Nova. She’s a finished product that looks good, and had a history with a few cracked shells. Anyway, I’m excited about the Frankie custom I’m about to do, so wish me luck!

I actually really like the paint on the first attempt, what was throwing me off is the head. Maybe another one with different sculpting(? Just me I guess.

The head looked a bit wide on the tiny monster high body. I think that was the problem. I really liked the original wig though. I think it would've looked nice on the new paint also.

This is still one of my favorite videos on this channel, to be honest. Usually, all the doll artists I see for inspiration create such beautiful projects, but we're all human, so seeing someone mess up is kind of a relief. We all do.
I don't know if anyone thinks the same, but personally, I think plastic rhinestones often end up making a doll(or any project for that matter) look cheap. It depends on the project and overall look, of course, but Nova looks a lot better without any of that, not in the hair, not on the clothes
I agree. I am a beader and have become very spoiled using real crystals lol. But, you got to use whatever is available. Nova looks better without the red and less fake crystals.

This doll really shows the struggle of an artist, you try so hard to make it work since you put so much time into it, but in the end sometimes it’s better to take a step back and try again. Im so happy she posted this video cause it really shows all the sides to making art

I don't customize dolls, but I'm a cosplayer, and I have the same problem: sometimes, I plan my costumes so much ahead, that I end up not doing them because I'm scared of encountering problems with it. Sometimes, this is very helpful to see the challenges in the costume ahead of time! And sometimes, I just wing a costume and it turns out perfectly, and sometimes it's a disaster.
Again, thank you so much for this video! I think Nova turned out pretty well in the end. As I saw her full body, I couldn't help but think that some kind of small accessory to her head would make her look a little more complete? But that's just my aesthetic! Anyway, I hope you have less stress with your future projects, I love your work!

I think Nova looks really nice, but her face seems a bit too round and smooth. Maybe adding some epoxy clay moulding to have higher cheekbones, or some spikes or something would be the thing? I think she looks really nice though, and I'm only thinking of this because Dollightful said she wasn't too happy with it ^^
What I thought would've been a good outfit idea: A sheer, black fabric that's nearly draped over her body, thick enough for modesty, but thin enough to show her celestial beauty. The fabric on her sleeves only comes to the halfway mark on her forearm and it falls down to the ground, dragging behind her like the long train on her dress. It's adorned with it's own galactic sparkle.

this was such a refreshing process to be able to witness. i think we tend to see skill in artistry as a straight line upward, and once you get to the "peak" of art, people expect everything you make to look amazing by default. but sometimes, some days the art just isnt arting. its comforting to see a professional on an off day going through failures and endless revisions during a project. not only does it show that no ones perfect, even the perceived-best, but also shows that you can overcome it when something doesnt quite work out. no matter your skill level, we can all learn and improve more.

She's gorgeous! To be honest, the original design was also pretty, but I agree that it didn't quite work and the new colours were so much better. I liked her very first outfit without the fringe though!
For the new design, I feel like the stark black of the wings may look just a bit odd, but I can see what you mean by "missing something". While having her nude is a good decision, I feel like some very light clothing (like the first clothes I mentioned) or possibly body jewelry might give her the needed detail! Such as a rhinestone belt and anklets etc. Her hair could also maybe do with some detail, like a small braid or some accessories, but I don't know how fragile it is and the free and natural look is also great. Love your work here either way!
A belt and anklets would be a great idea, and idk how much of a hassle it would be, but if she could go over all the stars on her body with glow in the dark paint too that would be amazing to see with the lights off

I actually really like her! But maybe what she's missing is jewellery and accessories? I know she's nude but simple fine chain details in either silver or black (or both!) would potentially bring her completely together? And if you used chain you'd still see the fabulous stars and marbling underneath? She definitely looks better without the red though. I think it was a bit too intense.

You should make the stars of her body glow in the dark too. Maybe add glitter to her hair that once you turn the lights off would look like dark spots in her hair. She looks great without a costume. The staff looks more like it belongs to a magical girl than a goddess (the small wings attached to it make it seem kind of childish?). Your work is great whatsoever. Mistakes make you grow.

Loads of people have said this already, but it's so so cool that you acknowledge and own your mistakes (and don't drag yourself too terribly about it). I'm really impressed at your perseverance with Nova and I'm glad you were able to make her work eventually. Thank you for your honesty about the creative process, imo it just makes you even cooler and more admirable as an artist

it would be cool if her staff glowed and the constellations did too. that way she would give off that mysterious magic galaxy feeling
I love how you you showed that even very talented and professional artist mess up to it's important for people to understand that because even what CZcamsrs don't show doesn't mean that they never messed up cuz I used to always get frustrated when I would mess up a project and my mom would have to remind me before actually post the video.
I suggest that next time you do a Galaxy doll, that you have a base of either a dark navy blue, or a very deep purple. Black is an option, but it'll swallow the colors. And if you look at the night sky it has a theme of dark but bright at the same time. So a dark blue or purple start would help convey that. Also if you fade the colors in a little, but not opaque I think that would help as well. As for the hair, I say good choice with the long, but a different color. Maybe a blackish with colorful stripes running throughout it. These are just ideas I want to share to try and help. I am not trying to be mean.
I think this doll is one of my favourites, I love the way she turned out. I also love that this video was still posted - very reassuring to amateur artists like myself.

Gah! Four years ago? Now I feel sort of old! But nonetheless, I loved Nova when you created her and I still love her to this day, I’ve rewatched this video at least 4 or 5 times and it never gets old!
personally, this wasn't a failure. for the stock box series, you are bound to make mistakes, but that's the fun of it. this doll was great! it's beautiful, astronomical, and an overall excellent addition to the stock box series.
Gah i really loved her stage 1 look! She reminded me of a new born galaxy which is, after all, a hot mess on it's own. Stage 2 looks like she's "stabilized" and cooled down. The glowing hair and eyes fit perfectly! Glowing constellations might look cool too though
That is a really cool take on it! She had a turbulent beginning just like our actual universe. Whoooooah~

I would love it, if the stars would be also glowing in the dark. I am not sure though, if the gow in the dark paint will be gloing enough with tiny dots.
Watching this process of you trying over and checking your doll after a couple of days is great!! Sometimes the work needs some mistakes to end up being really awesome. I am grateful that you posted this.
Still thinking that some laced heels would look good on her. And I liked the comment from "Foxymoron's Garden" about painting on stars as an outfit.

One more vote for glowing stars. Darkness already makes her look more mysterious and not from this planet and glowing dots will look fantastic.
