i know she was talking about how she didn’t like the wings because of how blanket like they are, but honestly i enjoy it! it adds more to the peaceful side of the dark, it reminds me of the whole blanket protecting children from what lurks in the dark!

The doll is honestly beautiful and seeing those "it broke" moments made me sad. One thing that I think you should have done was use fabric paint for the tail because acrylics aren't meant to be soft and bendable when they dry unlike fabric paint.
Also, it's easier to paint white fabric black than black fabric light blue. I still love this doll more than the design.
There's a medium for acrylics so you can use them for fabrics. It's pretty handy.
the last "it broke" had me chuckle loudly, merciless me XD
i mean, i saw it coming and i was surprised the nose didn't come off earlier, during the dye bath.

Honestly, I feel like all of the breakages were almost apt for a dark themed doll. She' imperfect and broken and spooky, perfect for someone dark. She' also absolutely beautiful and well worth the wait.

I believe Nyx’s mistakes also play into the dark elements, as sometimes mistakes are considered bad and therefore dark? If that makes sense, I love her and think she’s very beautiful :)

After rewatching this, the fabric tail is actually not bad when its scrunched up. It gives off a way that makes it act like skin. Same thing with Vaporion (bad spelling) it gives it the effect of skin and it looks amazing!

As an artist I think I can figure out why. There was things that went wrong and broke or didn't go as planned. You create this vision in your head of what you want something to look like but it just doesn't turn out the way you want it too. Believe me, recently I made an art piece and I had such a good vision for it but so much went wrong making it, by the end I didn't like it.
It be like that sometimes.
Just like Nova you can always go back and fix it, nothing wrong with that! Just know while you may not enjoy what art you created, others will! :)
That is exactly the way I see this. As an artist, you do envision this wonderful piece and when you go to create it, it fights back. Thing break, colors run or fade, adhesives fail, the sculpt doesn't turn out properly, the list goes on and on. It's so disappointing to make a piece of art and not be satisfied with it.

As an artist I can sympathize with her because its very hard to be proud of the work you did. While being critical and being dissatisfied with the work does help with improving yourself never having confidence in your work can be detrimental as well. It is a long way to go but I'm sure every artist will get there. But I have to agree with you this doll looks incredible!

This is probably one of my favorite dolls from you. I can understand your frustration as a creator with her, because of all of the mistakes and fails in the process, but I feel that those give her more personality. She may not be your ‘cleanest’ doll, but their is something about her that’s very entrancing. There is a lot of complexity, yet she isn’t cluttered, everything on her ended up pulling through to create a very well crafted character. Don’t feel dissatisfied by reasons you can’t specifically name. She is a lovely doll, don’t let yourself tell you otherwise.

It’s been three years and I still love this doll so much. Her Greek nose makes her so unique compared to the other dolls. I’d love to see more unique noses in the future as they give a face such fun character. ❤️

I can imagine why she's thinking that. The project went wrong in many places, which left her annoyed and sad. That's why she is not satisfied. And also, she ended up rushing the doll after things started going wrong. You can clearly see the difference in the amount of efforts in the previous dragon doll and this one, because she started feeling bad about this doll, even though this doll takes my breath away

I love this doll and all her wrinkles. They give her way more life and personality than she'd have otherwise. Sometimes the imperfections just add to that hand made charm.

I’m so glad you went with Nyx/Greek mythology as inspiration! As a Greek mythology fanatic I believe their embodiment of dark is super cool. A quiet and mysterious beauty whose wisdom knows no limits. As mother of the three fates, she’s clearly a powerful and intelligent figure.
This person is honestly an engineer. Like when I first started watching their videos I was like ooh! Dolls! And promptly became fascinated with the processes and problem solving that ties in to this kind of art. Very cool

man, rewatching this i can't believe i didn't realize that the first two dragons are named after the roman goddess of dawn (aurora) and greek goddess of night (nyx) and honestly i love that so much
I love the way her third eye looks like a gem in light, but when it's dark, the way it glows with her other 2 eyes is just- really pretty, and it shows that it's also an eye. I also love the way the stars and moon above her head glow in the dark as well. She's just really pretty overall. Especially the starry fabric on her wings.

I think this doll is soooooo awesome...but I agree that there is something off. I stared at it for a while. I think ( just to me at lest ) that the concept arts face looks very kind, calm and reserved. The dolls face looks more ready, attentive and energetic. With the astrology side of the theme, I imagine that she would spend a lot of time alone at night doing star stuff, quietly with fire flies to keep her company. I love the wings ever with a bit of poof. The body is outstanding! I think what I feel off about is the face. That's just my thoughts. 💙
I agree! For most of the video I thought she used the concept art for the thumbnail! I think the doll turned out beautiful and it’s light years better than Nova and that’s saying something because honestly I liked Nova!

I love how she accidently roasted Adora, who's supposed to be really physically strong
i actually love the quilted look of her wings, it's like she's forcing realty rifts to bind to her will to show constellations and stars. she's wonderful and i especially love her legs and claws. i think your dissatisfaction comes from some of the many conceptual failures and struggles you had while making this doll. Instead you need to look at the results, shes a wonderful and very much loved doll. this is not a Nova situation. this is a artist misjudging their work because it didn't go as smoothly as normal work goes situation. Keep your chin up and continue your work, i love seeing dragons!
I agree. I think its just a frustration with adapting concepts and the limitation of the medium, or knowledge of mediums that can translate into the vision. I completely understand that feeling. I think what helps is considering the mediums you woul use and what effects you want as you are making the concept art. Not that you shouldnt try to push yourself, your knowledge etc. But the claw thing was a great example of getting the similar idea by structurally going a different route and succeeding. It was an engineering issue at that point that she could overcome. But you can only come up against so many of those in one project and find a successful solution for so many. So sometimes you have to dial the challenges back for one project, or you find yourself disastisfied with the results because the entire thing was a struggle and a ton of experimentation. You end up looking at her like shes a Manny in disguise rather than having affection for a manny that really challenged you but doesnt pretend to be completed or a success. And with a project that has a lot of experimentations, sometimes it better to lean into the results of failure and work with them, rather than trying to ressist and cover them up, which is difficult when you have exact concept art you are trying reproduce, rather than relying loosely on a concept.
Like that discoloration with the dyes creates a pretty cool effect that you could lean into. Might have been cool to make a proto nyx with all the failed experimentations and come back to the concept art again at antoher time when you are armoured with the knowledge of how to do those ideas effectively, at east as effectively as you imagine is possible. oh and the glue seeping. Reminded me a bit of frankie stien and how that might be useful at some point when making a zombie horror doll with seeping seams.

Just rewatching the dragon series and realizing how much influence I took from them for my first sculpture, her horn shape and Terra’s half tree half rock leg design. Which is impressive because my first sculpture was of a mythical deer.
Going back and watching these I realize how much I REALLY like 2-A design, you probably won’t even see this but if you were to think of making maybe gem/rock characters I Luke absolutely love to see 2-A come to life

I wasn’t a big fan of Nyx when the video first came out but after rewatching it I like her a lot more then before. She’s a beautiful doll and captures the theme of dark very well
Coming back 3 years later, I want to use vanta black (worlds blackest paint) for my own Nyx, especially the wings
I’d recommend Black 2.0 or Black 3.0, since vanta black isn’t available for purchase

Back to re-watch this series again and noticing how insanely close the finished product is to the concept art. Crazy!
Coming back to this from several years and at least 5 rewatches later, I still think Nyx looks very pretty, and I adore the Greek influences in her design and name. However, I do see some reasons she might look a bit odd, especially next to the concept art:
- The nose could perhaps be a bit broader and flatter
- The irises were a good deal smaller in the concept art, giving her a bit more of a spooky, mystical vibe than in the finished doll, since bigger irises tend to be seen as more “cutesy”
- The mouth probably could have benefitted from a slight change from the mold, as the Adora doll had such a distinct upturned smile even without any extra defining that it makes Nyx look more comforting and motherly than a dark and powerful sorceress
- The eyelashes and eyebrows definitely popped a lot more in the concept art, as they were lighter, especially when combined with the forehead fully fading to black in the concept art as well, and I think having them be lighter against the dark background could have helped her look more mystical
- This may be a bit nitpicky, but the hair also looks a bit greasy, almost? Perhaps a slightly softer and less shiny hair would have aided her dark look
- And of course, the custom fabric would have been a huge help to get the gradient you wanted without sacrificing the smooth look
However, Nyx still turned out great! Love the detail in the decorative threads around the clothes, and the shiny wings are top tier

17:51 - something that might help with a similar problem in the future is fusible interfacing, or iron on adhesive - if you attached it to the back of the wing fabric, once you have it in place you could iron both sides of the wings together to make them stick together. This doesn't work on all types of fabric, so it might not have helped here, either. Either way, I think she looks amazing, and I'm always impressed with your ingenuity and creativity in these videos! Thank you for making them.

I'm rewatching this and honestly, I think Nyx is vey beautiful. The blanket effect on the wings adds a softness to her. The only thing with her is that the tail is a bit high on her back but otherwise, she's stunning.

Amazing video! I have leared tons from this and will be rewatching this video many times for refrence when making a horror fairy. The legs im deffo going to copy. The way you used wire for the horns and ears, the paper nails, wing hinges... This video has really taught me how to tackle obsticles i was concerned about. The mistakes included are a huge help so im so glad you kept them in as I know i will have hiccups too. I usually make custom figures and props so this will be my first doll project but with your video I'm confident and ready to try out the techniques new to me so thankyou. This video is a huge help!!!

I actually think that she’s one of my favorite dolls you’ve made!! The wings really are beautiful and I definitely get the “looking into a void of space” concept when I look at them. When I watched this video for the first time, I thought that one of the problems was the face sculpt of the Adora doll. She has an upturned smiling mold and I used to think that it didn’t quite work for Nyx’s concept, but now that I look at her again, it gives her a mysterious sly expression, which I associate with fortune teller characters. Overall I really like this doll, and video. So in my opinion, once again, Katherine, you have knocked it out of the park! Keep up the amazing work!!

“i’m very dissatisfied” I LOVE THIS DOLL SHES ONE OF MY FAVORITES. THR STRUGGLES GIVE HER SO MUCH MORE OF A STORY. i actually like the cracks... she’s a dark dragon so it kinda looks like she’s been through battle or something like battle scars! you always manage to outdo yourself i love you Katherine!
