Great video Andrea. In my experience bath towels are your friends. When sleeping on your back, with no pillows, use 1 rolled towel under the neck and 1 folded towel (to size of a large book) under the lower back. For sleeping on the stomach use 2 or 3 folded towels under one shoulder to lift it so your neck isn't as cramped. Sleeping on the side, fold a towel long and narrow and put it under your pillow by your neck to raise that part of the pillow and support your neck better. For neck pain itself, wrap a towel around your neck to keep muscles warm and relaxed all night long.
I had back surgery ( L5/ S1 disc removed) years ago ( 1996). over a couple of years I tried many mattresses that did not work out, and I did not want to get "HOOKED" on pain medication, and having worked in a hospital, I bought a low pressure hospital mattress( long term care). it was the total answer to my back pain, I am a back sleeper, and when I wake up in the morning, I am still on my back( no tossing/ turning).I also put a triangle foam block under the mattress to provide a "knee break" I am no longer on pain meds. and have no back pain when sleeping. during the day, I have to move around, I cannot stand too long or sit too long, my back really begins to bother me if I do that( the pain is in the spine area where the surgery was performed) thanks so much for posting this video, and have a great day!!!!
Thank you doctor..IamAneena. kerala
This Is Amazing information on different sleep positions to help people find better sleep with less discomfort God bless you for sharing your gifts 🌹✌🙏😴
Great video. I like the cheap pillow too. But my wife a manager a shop call pillow talk. She keep out my pillow and replace it with really expensive pillows which hurt my neck. I going to share with her. Cheers Graham
I am in the middle of a fibromyalgia flare, so far 2 days.. I am weeping watching these videos! Thank you so much! Finally someone who understands
Thanks Dr. Furlan for easy informative video as usual. Really I wish this to be taught during medical school for all undergraduates. It will make a big difference.
I’m not the only one who buys pillows frequently trying to find one that reduces neck pain. ☺️
I had a shoulder Decompression 5 months ago have struggled even with the help of a Physiotherapist to get that perfect sleep position. I am going for soft pillows! We’ve had a Tempurpedic mattress which is firm with fairly firm pillows, time to ditch the expensive heavy firm pillows! Thank you!
Same here I hade mine done years a go still in pain
A Therapeutica pillow is the absolute best because it comes in different sizes to fit shoulder depth of side sleeper but also conforms when turning onto back.
Sleeping flat on my back is the beginning and end of my pain...lifting my legs gives me relief but its tiring now i started using the pillow below my knees and it helps, thanks to this video.

Thank you Andrea for this very informative video! I have severe arthritis and chronic pain and like you I change position a lot during the night. I will treat myself to a new pillow as I think I could get more restful sleep if I fold a pillow like you do.

Hi Doctor. I an fortunate to view ur videos recently. My mom...74yrs is suffering from lumbar spondylosis pain which is unbearable and could not walk a step. I am showing ur videos and now slowly she is getting the hope that she can walk once pain decreases. Myself had such pain due to symmetric disc bulge at L3, L4, L5. I have found ur videos very helpful and doing 3 times in a week.
One request is plz see that the subtitles display at the top of the video as they are covering u completely and we are missing to see few postures. Thank you so much

Dear Andrea! Thank you very much for your very informative and helpful videos! Please advise if you have heard of carboxytherapy for joints and ligaments on osteoartritis? When the injections of CO2 is made under the skin near the joint. Though the carboxytherapy is primarily used for cosmetic purposes, I read that some clinics started to use this method to treat osteoartritis in a better and shorter way (in a combined therapy of course). Please give your opinion! Thanks a lot!

I am fortunate that at age 69 I have no chronic pain and wake up each morning pain free, no aching joints or muscles. The last time I took an ibuprofen was 2 years ago when I was knocked over by a car when riding my bike--I finished the ride though. I am also fortunate in that I can sleep anywhere, even on a hard floor which I like better than a soft bed.
That is great to hear!!
You are so lucky. I pray to be ,pain free Everyday
You are very very lucky 🙏universe has truly blessed you. Cherish each day.
Wounderful video on best sleeping positions on all musculoskeletal ailments .which type of pillows matress and right positions to sleep comfortably and pain free most often its a million dollar query by patients asks and even nocturnal discomfort causes more flare up the symptoms physically & psychologically. Thank you dr Furlan for this great demonstration! I have fibromyalgia, neck, lower back and hip pain.over the years, I've tried all you shared and it helped. Now I have a sleep number bed and I love it. I can adjust mattress firmness, and raise head and feet. Should I be worried about the alignment of my back?
Yes! You sound exactly like me. I love my Select Comfort bed because, as strange as it may sound, some nights my body just feels as if I may need more, or less, support than I would normally use. I also sleep on my side, and I slightly elevate both the head (I have GERD, too, so the head up is very important), and the lower part of the bed also slightly elevated, because I find that when my feet/ankles are slightly elevated, it seems to help my leg pain, although I don’t know if it exacerbates my hip pain. I have shoulder pain on both sides (🤦🏻♀️) and am a side sleeper, so that is sometimes a problem, but having my head raised a little bit sometimes helps. I hope you are having a better night sleep with less pain with your Select Comfort. I have recommended this bed to everyone I know!
@ Faithful Tita you are so lucky. The sleep number beds are the best beds for those with FM because they adjust to however one feels from day to day. And, having the head or feet raised a bit won't hurt. (Retired RN with FM)
@ Cyd Kreletich Absolutely, the Sleep Number bed is the best choice for those with. Fibromyalgia because our bodies pain changes not only in intensity but where from day to day and often hour to hour. I suggest too looking into the Therapeutics pillow. If you have neck or shoulder pain or headaches, this is really good. A prescription is needed but that shouldn't be too hard to convince your doctor.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like Sleep Number service the UK.. also few UK shops allow returns
You've got some great videos on very relative topics. Thank you.

The mattress I am using now is still about 25 years old. It is a firmer and longer than average one which was necessary for my father to fall asleep on successfully after working his whole adult life at first as a brick maker and then as a welder. When he died it became a hand me down to my youngest daughter and then after she was done with it then it got handed down to me. I don't want to part with this mattress since it is not lumpy at all or being more apt to sink more in the center of it. In addition since it is so firm it goes perfect with the foam pillow which my mother bought for me that has a curved surface to prevent my neck from being crooked while I am laying in bed. My mother one Christmas gave that kind of pillow as gift to me, my 2 youngest children and to whom was often being responsible for helping me pick them up almost 100 miles away 3 weekends out of 4 every month for years. Unlike us after bringing it to his house he complained that it only gave him a headache and so he threw it out.
Grazie Dr Furlan x i suoi utili consigli! Cari saluti dall'Italia 🇮🇹🤗🙋🏼

How about side sleepers w/ lower back pain? You only addressed back and stomach sleepers with this type of pain. Thank you much for the information !!
The video is already long. I am thinking of doing a part 2.
Thank you for this video: i believe i have watched this before. I also change positions alot through the night but my most comfortable position is on my stomach with my hands straight down. That's because i have neck, shoulder, back, muscles, joints... alot of widespread pain. But being on my stomach with hands straight down is the best for me.

I tend to sleep on my left side a lot and sometimes my back. I have a ultra firm bed. I’ve tried those memory foam mattress toppers, which has caused me horrible hip and lower back pain. I can’t sleep on my stomach, because that too cause lower back pain.🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️

I was so happy to see this video this evening I had such a hard night sleeping last night with my shoulder pain even if I didn't sleep on the bad shoulder, it hurt I do use many of the tips. What are your thoughts on taking a sleep med for someone with chronic pain to help them sleep through the night better? because the sleep med will help you stay asleep better than if you didn't have it because the chronic pain easily wakes you up but if you're sleeping hard you're less likely to wake up. I'm getting to the point right now where I'm thinking about trying a sleep med for this purpose, because of lack of good sleep. I appreciate your tips and giving us hope that there can be some relief. Please let me know your thoughts on having a sleep med for chronic pain at night. Thank you so much.
Please talk to your doctor about sleep medications.
I have another video with tips to increase sleep efficiency. Please watch and let me know what you think, Dawn.

Glad to hear that
I have to add since I have scoliosis and my connected tissue is so weak and I've got that thing that's worse than far from my algebra. I have to put a pillow a filled up sock with foam between my knees and flip around every 3 hours and my hips and ears burn so I've ripped out holes in my pillows my pillows. And my shoulders hurt so I have to put a pillow under my ribcage to get off my shoulder so I think it's spurcitis or or just that I feel everything cause I'm crooked and I'm 60 years old and I have osteoporosis Chronic fatigue syndrome and insomnia Amia and brain atrophy and not having a great time. I can't lay on my back because of the key focus in my back it's too much it's already going up my neck because my head is too forward and cut off my juggler veins to my brain and I'm having that atrophy and the and lobes in the bottom of the cerebellum or all messed up with my motor control and I'm just having the drop outs where my head is awake and then I just fall to the ground and I'm afraid to drive my car.
We struggle with some similar sleep issues. I have scoliosis and my hips/legs are different sizes. I can say I found the apple core pillow helps to keep my neck aligned whether on my side or on my back. It will not allow my head/neck to go to far forward so I can breathe fine. I also use a knee pillow that supports my legs resting on a platform portion of it and if I turn on my side I do keep a foam knee pillow there to support the alignment of my hips. There are so many products it is challenging to find ones that are a perfect fit, but keep trying. Also after a surgery earlier this year I kept a cooler beside my bed with pillows in zip loc bags. In the middle of the night I traded for cooler ones from the ice chest. This was good so as not to get up in the middle of the night to walk to the freezer and find ice packs. Those were smaller pillows or half stuffed pillow cases . I needed them for my foot with my nerve condition of CRPS,but it may help with overheating sensations.... I had to experiment alot,my husband and I share a bed ,but he works overnight/early morning and is usually at work when I am asleep, that is why I can use both sides of the bed . Sometimes I also find sleeping on a recliner helps.
My cousin and a friend have the kind of drop outs you mention. My friend found relief when she spoke to her doc and they changed some medications. My cousin could feel the the issue a minute or so before so she would try to sit down. Hers were somewhat induced by stress, triggers would be even losing track of an important item. She would try to write down the thoughts and happenings in the moments leading up to the drop to talk to her doc/therapist and learn new ways of coping. Both my friend and my cousin decided to stop driving b/c they were to afraid. Hopefully you will overcome all the challenges and find resolutions soon.🙏
Thank you farlan
Sleeping for me is torture for 80% of the time. Because of chronic pain almost everywhere: neck, left shoulder, lumbar back, lower back, tail bone, right hip, both knees and both ankles. The cherry on the sundae is I also suffer from neuropathy. Fortunately I have been using a RIK liquid gel mattress for the last 10 years. When I must sleep on any other mattress it’s hell. The positions that get me the best results is flip flopping from side to side. It’s the pain that will wake to flip. I hate it!!! Ill nap in my power chair to make up on some sleep. I’m usually in bed 14 hours plus a day to get 5 to 7 hours of sleep.

To avoid pain on pelvis, we are in Indonesia have "Guling" It is a kind of cylindrical pillow that when you sleep on your side, you can place one leg at the top side above the "guling" that you embrace and support one of your leg to avoid tension at top joint of your leg so not hurting the cavity.
Cheers from Indonesia.

Thank you Doctor. I think I need to change my pillow again after watching this, I sleep on my right side most of the time but move onto my back occasionally. I often get out of bed in the morning with some sort of back or shoulder pain, mattress is just three years old with a built in toper and medium firm. Can I ask what you recommend for the fillings on the inside of a pillow - springs, memory foam, air flow, feathers, etc, the list goes on and never know what pillow to choose when buying.
