- I have spent the past several weeks focusing on one goal - cover my layout with something other than brown paint. Some of what I did is temporary, and some is permanent. In this video I'll take you on a tour and show you a few Regular Guy techniques along the way. Take a look and tell me what you think!

Hi ya Steve. I was hoping this prolonged absence wasn’t due to some major malfunction of the Regular Guy. And……it wasn’t. That’s good. I like your new philosophy of speed scenicing. You can treat different sections has “ under construction “ as you build them up. Very cool. Okay…..dude. Good seeing ya. Nicely done. Later.
Stormin Normin! Thanks for the comment and concern brother. I've just been a little busy and using the layout for what it's for... decompression from the day's events. Thanks again for hanging out for all these years brother!
I love your channel! I especially like the “regular guy” take on everything, just helps to make everything in the hobby seem easier and more down to earth and has definitely inspired me to get on with stuff on my own layout as opposed to just being too scared of making mistakes
Awesome! That is why I started this channel. We all have different skill levels. The important thing is to just shove off and enjoy the experience. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Great to see your videos again. I've been missing you and your projects!
Awe Conn, that means a lot. Thanks my friend...
Steve, everything is looking awesome. Love the speed scenic info. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. Ken
Hey Ken! Thanks for the encouragement! Rail-on my man!
If you still had the horses and coral, you could put them at the park. Love the maintenance facility work. Looks great.
LOL! Jeff, I was just thinking that. Actually, I may get a whole bunch of cows and some cowboys and put them into one of the scenes until it gets built out.
I really like what you did Steve 😊 !! I also do so - so landscaping just to cover the area too . I hate looking at foam and wood !! And thank you for this update 😊 , it is well needed.
Hey Kraig! Thanks for the comment, and great minds think alike, eh?! LOL!
Glad to see you back and love the progress so far.
Just getting i done my friend. Using the hobby for what it's for... getting through life. Thanks for the encouragement!
Great to see your revised layout. Bones look fantastic. Looking forward to seeing future developments over next months/years. Love the channel. Regards from Australia.
Thanks Allan! Always nice to here from Australia!
Wow, looking good there Steve. Big difference from the old house layout, the double decker that you put a lot into, but this one level, where you can see it all and not have hidden tracks is awesome. Miss the Saturday show but glad to see your still alive, kicking and railing on. Be safe.
Hey Rob! Frankly, I miss the Saturday show as well. I was just talking to the 1st Lady about it. Maybe we can see it again sometime down the road. Sure appreciate you support though my friend!
Very nice layout, I really like your solution to cover all the areas with temporary grass and dirt, it makes the layout look so much better while you figure out what you want to build and when. It looks complete now, and when you add more buildings it will look like it is a natural expension.
I can't wait until the protestors show up when the camp ground at Caleeinte Point is sold to some industrialist LOL! Thanks Erik!
Thank God your still here!! Yes!!! Keep on railing on my friend
Not going anywhere my friend lol! Rail-on!
Thank you !!
You see enough plywood at work, who needs to see it all around the trains. Quick and nice and now you don’t have to imagineer the railroad when you just want to watch a train. Nice job Steve.
Boy you know it Derek! Just gotta finish the yard now :)
Hello Steve,
I'm a french railroad modeler and it's every time a real pleasure to see your latest video.
Continue to let me dream again.
I wait the next review of your railroad.
Bye!!
Salut Marc! Merci beaucoup pour vos encouragements. J'espère que tout est le meilleur en France. Rassurez-vous mon ami !
Steve, that layout was really cool.I liked how it wondered around the room, so cool
Thanks for remembering us Steve, I can't support financially at the moment, but I always learn something form your videos. I really appreciate it!
I appreciate the sentiment, but your encouragement is enough my friend! Thanks!
Glad to see you back, I totally enjoy your videos, just remember we're not crazy, its the rest of the world thats messed up.
LOL! You totally nailed it Allen. Thanks brother!
Your new background hill is beautifully realistic looking! Like your new layout.
Thank you Steve, so glad that you are well and happy, and as always your layout and efforts are forever an inspiration!
Thanks Lyndon! Appreciate the view and the encouragement my friend!
Hey Steve. I was just watching some other vids and thought, “hey, I hadn’t seen much from Steve-o recently. Wonder what he’s got going. “ and here comes the announcement that you have a new post up. Happy days!
Hi Terry! Just getting through life like everybody else. Thanks for the encouragement and for watching my friend!
Oh Steve, this is so awesome! Watching your new layout come to life is such a treasure for me! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome, Samantha! Thanks for the encouragement and for watching!
You have made great progress on this new layout. I'm sure you have no regrets tearing down the old one. This one is so much more satisfying.
Hi Peter! You are correct my friend. I really love the way this is turning out. Thanks for watching!
Steve, nice to see how you have moved forward over these past few weeks. You have made more progress than me as I am now about 60% of my track plan. We keep pushing forward with new ideas and technics thanks to you leading the way. Cheers.
In my opinion, pushing forward is the only goal. Somethings a quick some are slow, but the time spent is always worth it in the end. Rail-on my friend!
It's really fun to hear your excitement with doing things your way. I'm building GPRR Glacier Park Railroad, for the past 3 years, and pretty much using your philosophy, doing it my way. I have incorporated everything I have accumulated over the past 65 years into the layout. I love watching what you do! Keep it up my friend.
Hi Bob! You gotta do it YOUR way. After all, it's YOUR railroad, right?! Thanks for the comment and for watching my friend!!
It's pleasing to see you making progress to your liking. Model on.
Hi Donald! Thanks for the encouragement my friend!
Great progress. Also glad to see you are ok!
LOL! Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks RB!
My 5 year old son loves this layout. He says “tell the awesome train dude it’s perfect!”
LOL! Tell your 5 year old I am flattered, and I appreciate the encouragement! :)
Very Nice. The layout has a great feel about it. very relaxing. Good Job.
Thanks a ton Gus!
Great Idea getting something down over the base. and then take time to decide exactly what to put in the space. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Samuel! Yeah, I just got tired of waiting until everything was done. This way, I can have a "completed" layout while not ACTUALLY being completed :)
Fantastic! I’d love to see some operations videos. The would be spectacular on your new point to point.
Yo DCR! Thanks for that. I did an ops video for the members, but I may do something for the general audience coming up here soon. Thanks for the comment, and rail-on my friend!
The layout looks so much better with the temporary scenery, Steve. It will be nice to see more of what you are doing in the future. Thanks for sharing, David
Hi David! Thanks for that. The scenery looks good from a distance (which was the intention), however up close it'll need work where I keep it. Always something to do :)
Steve, I’m just starting a new layout and really like your idea of speed scenery. I also like the way you incorporated Switch Jct into the new layout as a historic site. The nearby camp ground is a place for visitors to the historic site to stay and I would like to see you not only keep it as part of the layout but also expand it some. Both the historic site and the camp ground are things we don’t regularly see on a layout. Thanks for sharing your ideas and progress. I have enjoyed your videos and have learned from them and they have provided me with numerous ideas.
Thanks Sully! Since I don't run ops all that often, I think I'm only going to add a couple more industrial areas, or towns. The rest will be a better scenic'd version of what I have now. Thanks for the input and rail-on my friend!
I like the height of your layout. I had never thought of the change in visual perspective by just raising the layout a foot. Great idea.
Hi Dave! It gets just a little tough when I get to the scenes that are a couple inches about the basic height. However, when I run the trains I totally dig the point of view. Thanks for the comment, the view, and rail-on buddy!
You have been busy! Well done Steve, I'm looking forward to seeing your next adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Peter! Thanks for checking in! Stay tuned...
Love the simplicity... Let the scenery show through... Still great running and switching opportunities... Really like the new layout... Way to go...
Thanks a ton Daryl! Rail-on brother!
Somebody's been very busy , feel a bit ashamed at what I haven't achieved in the time you've done this . Love the clean lines of the layout - always a pleasure to watch your vids - always learn something new . Regards from Australia also .
Hi Patricia! Thanks for the comment - love the encouragement! Rail-on!
Good idea on covering the plywood with a temporary scenery Steve. It makes the layout look much more finished.
Thanks John! It really does, especially with the track painted and ballasted. Now when I run my trains they actually move through a scene rather than benchwork :)
Amazing artistry , excellent filming of techniques, and your enthusiasm is second to none!!
AWESOME, EXCELLENT and PERFECT!!!!! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
Howdy, Steve! I really like your approach of doing "temporary scenery" until you can come back and add permanent stuff later on at your leisure. I believe that's a brilliant approach to building a layout, once you've got the benchwork built, the track laid, the wiring hooked up, and the trains running without problems. ...Roy
UNCLE ROY FOR THE WIN
Pan-a ma! Hey Roy! Hope you're feeling better my good man. Been watching your channel and am hoping for some new builds soon. Take care and rail-on!
Great to catch up on your latest update on the re-build Steve...the scenery is looking great and will be looking out for for future installments on the development of your railroad...Rail-on Steve..😁👍🚂
Gary, thanks for being a member and thanks a ton for the encouragement. Rail-on buddy!
I'm new to your channel and I have to say that I'm very inspired and excited about railroad building. I'm trying to get my HO layout going and you have gave joy and inspiration. I love your energy and the "regular guy" side of railroad modeling. Thank you for all you do.
That's coming along great, Steve! I really love the historical museum town. Very nice use of those structures and steam engine.
Thanks Ed! It's hard to believe that just 4 months ago I had a whole different layout in here!
So glad to see this shaped layout since it's close to my future basement idea. Looks good and can't wait to see the towns installed in future vids.
Hi Debbie! Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate the encouragement too. Good luck on your layout!
Really good idea grassing the layout. At least you got a train running. Very nice.
Hi Ian! Love watching the train run, not gonna lie ;)
Looks great! It has to feel good to be that far along so quickly! Well done!
Oh, Eric, I gotta tell you - when I rail-fan my trains through these scenes I get a real sense of satisfaction. Thanks for the comment and for watching my friend.
Steve, The new layout looks so much more open and it just looks so good. In railway modelling there's nothing knew under the sun. You must have forgotten " Zip Scenery". Lin Westcot ( Editor of the Model Railroader ) showed how to cover large area's of baseboard so area's were no longer bare and gave you time to fill in these area's with extra scenery. You sifted sawdust coloured with poster paints. Make up 3 different shades of green batches. Lay out onto seed tray's to dry in the sun. Glue on the empty area cover with the sawdust mixture's. Shake on sifted soil, let dry then vac. All done long before we could get our hands on all scenery materials we can buy today. I see you've had some hot temps the last week. Keeps up you'll be modelling in the railway room altogether naked. A true modeller. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Looking good! I like using joint compound for a lot of different solutions on a layout. It's great for smooth concrete, rough rocks, grooved river beds... it is the product that keeps on giving!
Your layout is looking really good, wow, impressive keep on trucking.
Looks so much bigger then the old one! Love the shape of it all. Was a lot of work but I think it was defiantly worth it..
the smaller layout is looking good!
Thanks Petey!
Fantastic work, Steve!! 🤩 the new layout is really coming together!
Thanks a ton Pat!
Very nice layout and I agree that adding ground cover makes a world of difference, your not alone with the dust problem my layout gets covered with the stuf , takes a long time to clean up and some dust just adds to the effect. Thanks for the video
Great work, put in a railroad and life will surely follow it. How the great prairies became the USA!
Looking good - so much better than plain plywood bases.
Thanks a ton Chazzy!
Wow, looking amazing! I can feel your excitement!
Hey Donald! Yep, I'm totally diggin it! Thanks!
Well Steve I was wondering where you'd been it's been a long time since you put out any type of the video I'm glad to see that you're still alive and kicking and what you've done so far with your layout looks great can't wait to see your other videos coming out take care my friend stay healthy and rail on👍👍
Hi Charles! Thanks a ton for the continued encouragement brother! Stay strong and rail-on!
Looking good mate, great seeing your head back on CZcams, can't wait to see what you do next 👍😀
SB, Hello! Glad to see you looking well. Hope the first lady is doing well too! I am mucking about building a big viaduct from time to time and it's taking a long time. There is no schedule. But! I've made an oval, so that I can run, test, maintain trains. After this, I agree with you. I'll basic landscape something I'm going to change. I have the stuff, so we might as well look presentable. Rail on! Keep rolling down the railroad 😀. Regards Stephen.
Hey Stephen! My and the 1st Lady are doing quite well thank you very much. Run hem trains brother!
Been missing you Sir. Thank you for the up date.
Looking very nice, looking forward to seeing it progress, thanks for sharing
Hi joe! Thanks for that and stay tuned!
Lookin' good! I really like the look of basic completeness. Rail On.
Mr C in the house! Thanks brother. I'm pretty stoked with the way things are gong now. Appreciate your long-term support my man!
Like your new layout much better than the giant layout you started…enjoy your approach that less is much more…thanks for your updates 😎
Appreciate that encouragement my friend! I like it better too :)
Looking great. Love the openness.
Thanks a ton Rick!
Hiya Steve…wow, you have been a busy bee. Great progress and liking the idea of speed scenics.. Stay well my friend, all the best, Chris
Hey Chris! Thanks for checking in and for watching. Rail-on my friend!
Looks great. I like the uncluttered look of your layout.
That's amazing, fantastic work 👍👍👍
Big fan. From Denmark. Simple and easy. 🇩🇰
Hey Steve! Glad you’re back! Keep videos coming brother
Will do my friend, and thanks a ton for the encouragement!
Love the layout, nice to see ya rolling along 👍😊😎
Thanks brother!
Very well done. You right on track
Thanks Miles!
Fabulous layout! Great work! Greetings from England!
Hallo Steve, ti scrivo dall'Italia per fare i complimenti a questa opera, e al costruttore. Bello spaccato degli USA.
BEAUTIFUL SETUP MY FRIEND.
I would love to see you model a cement plant! on your layout with all those cement cars! And remember sometimes less is more thrilled to see you happy with it and running!
Hi Steve great to see you again. Lovin' the layout.
Since your last video, I had a rethink of my layout. For the longest time my back has been bothering me, and I wasn't doing much on my layout. After seeing that video it hit me, @ 6' tall, my low layout was killing me...lol. I raised my layout to about the height of yours and wow, what a difference. Now I'm almost on it everyday.
Now I'm going to use your speed scenery plan, as I'm not quite committed to where I'm headed, and not a fan of pink foam..lol.
Thanks for all the tips and tricks, it sure helped.
As always, looking forward to seeing you again.
Cheers Robert.
Hey Robert! Yep, I've had my layouts at varying heights over the years. I have found that this is perfect. For the spots further back, I just stand on a folding chair when I need to work on them. Best MR decision I ever had. Thanks for checking in, and rail-on!
Even without the towns and structures it's looking great
Thanks a ton Jeffery!
So much better Syeve and more fun .👍👍👍
I sure do like it. I don't regret tearing down the other one and building this one. Having a blast!
Fantastic layout and I loved your presentation and explanations on your future plans.
Thanks! I'm really enjoying this version. Hopefully you picked up some inspiration for your layout!
Looks great…good job!!
Great to see an update, been missing you. like the progress.
Thanks my friend, and thanks for being a channel member too!
Good idea on covering the ground and not leaving it bare plywood :)
It makes me feel like it's "finished" here and there :) Thanks!
@@ItsMyRailroad Very true. Makes you hate bare plywood less :)
Awesome, always enjoy your videos and enthusiasm.
Thanks for the encouragement John!
Tip for dusting: have a blower and a vacuum - one in each hand. Do it a few times and suddenly air will smell sweet and nothing more is being kicked up
Awesome Stephen, thanks!
Wow! it looks great Steve you sure got a lot done . I was wondering when we were going to get another video.I look forward to them.
Hi David! Thanks for the encouragement brother. Means a lot!
Hey Steve. It's always great to see one of your updates. I like the quick scenery idea. Stay safe.
So Larry, has anyone ever told you you remind them of Kenny Rogers?! LOL! Thanks my brother, appreciate the continued support!
@@ItsMyRailroad from what I have been told many people had told Kenny that he reminded them of me. 😁😁😁
Amazingly awesome! Very impressive!
Wow, looks really good, the print out backdrop buildings look way better than I could get mine to look
Dying too teardown and start my new layout
Nice looking layout, nice to see you excited about it.
Thank you my friend, and thanks for watching!
Looks awesome Steve good job 👍
Looks outstanding nice job my friend!!!
Keep the videos coming there great
Looking great Steve!
Thanks Ray!
Hi Steve. Its looking fantastic now....... From Dave Farrell in the UK.
I really like the idea of getting the ground cover in to hide the wood, it just makes the layout not look so unfinished. Along the edge of your layout if you put like a railing (like on a set of stairs) then you could lean on this and it will work a treat to stop elbows on the scenery. Have seen it on a layout and it works a treat they had even put some foam and leather over the top to make it comfy.
Your layout looks great and I like your techniques. One thing I do, if I may, is I use old spice shakers to apply my soil, fine turf, etc.
Hi steve. Just saw your latest episode. What a sweet layout. Really love what you've done with the place! Keep up the good work.
Hi Robert! Totally diggin the way it's coming out. Thanks a ton for the encouragement, and rail-on my friend!
Looks great 👍
Awesome video Steve. Really loving the industries on the layout. Gives me some ideas on what I can do to my own layout. Cheers. - Nicholas.
Hi Nicholas! Glad some of my ideas resonate at your end. Thanks for watching my friend!
I just found your channel...it's AWESOME...your a great talent...right now we live in a apt so if I do get back into trains I'd have to go N scale...want to get into it again especially now as im battling terminal cancer and this kind of hobby..really helps keep my mind off of the proverbial negative rabbit hole ..but anyways awesome layout...oh you've probably been told this before ..my wife says you could easily be a doppelganger for Brian Cranston as Walt in (Breaking Bad) 😆 🤣..I have to agree with her!...So cool..anyways love the channel...and your talent..nice to meet you.
Love that layout. It goes places! Not just around and around around a big roundhouse. The details are terrific! I hate those jammed-with-track-going-nowhere layouts. That's the layout I would want.
Glad to see you and your railroad again. I was wondering what was up, but then it's not really my business. Your layout is looking AWESOME my friend!!!! I haven't done any real scenery work for a couple months now, but I have been running my layout, and changing some things about the Operating plan. I think it will make OP sessions better and easier. Keep up the Fantastic work, and looking forward to more videos from you!!!
Hi Dave! Thanks a ton for the encouragement. When I get further along perhaps we can see an ops vid. Really appreciate the support, and rail-on my friend!
@@ItsMyRailroad Looking forward to that Ops Video!!! Keep up the Great work you are doing!!! I'm really digging your new layout!!!
