    Up to 1 year for recovery? What a relief. I wish my surgeon told me that. I’m a parkour athlete and had my surgery August 19, 2022. Dorsiflexion is limited/painful even with doing PT everyday. My doctor said I’d be 100% and back to competing after 3 months but there’s NO WAY😂 Thanks for the video, I’ll give myself 6 more months.

      If you broke your ankle and had surgery for ligaments repairs most likely 8months to a year or more recovery period but it still defends on severity of injury and your therapy. Don’t rely on GP or doctors too much, physiotherapists and surgeons know more when it comes to recovery. I had ankle surgery 3months ago with multiple ligaments and tendon repairs. I can stand and walk now without crutches and the flexibility of my ankle is improving. I have exercises everyday prescribed by my therapist and a monthly schedule to my gp. I learned a lot from different videos like this. I had my injury Nov 2022.

    Bimalleolar ankle fracture on 9/28/22, and I'm finally starting to walk with partial weight and crutches after 7 weeks post-op. I'm fortunate to already have had a trusted PT who gave me more info on what to expect at this stage of recovery. My surgeon never mentioned issues with the nerve pain I had within the first week and potentially developing temporary plantar fasciitis as I start walking. This is all a long-winded way of saying I'm really glad I also came across this video (never thought to put an insole in the boot) and I'll be sharing it with her. Thank you!

      I had same bimalleolar fracture 7 weeks ago ,May 2023. I am home , litterally bedridden, foot highly elevated, no weight bearing at all. I have 2 plates and 4 clips. In August I was supposed to travel to USA/ I live in Australia / .I knew I can't travel but didn't have idea how long it takes to heal and what to expect. The surgeon who operated my ankle told me openly that its impossible, as the foot won't be ready for it. In August the foot will be slowly adjusting for short walks involving lots of swelling which is part of healing and again require lots of rest. I was told to reconsider trip after 12-14 mnts. Those fractures takes aproximately 12-18 mnths even 2 years to heal . Is slow process. All those 7 weeks I also wasn't allowed to do any physio beside moving toes gently. I have great very thorough physio who wrote letter to surgeon to see how my healing is progressing and see if we can begin with foot rehab and ankle. Im going for review next week and hopefully I will be able to start proper physio. I thought the physio will start straight away but my physio said we can't do much at all until surgeon confirms the ankle is ready for exercise . He was right! I have been going through so much pain some days without moving leg at all. Its true GP couldn't give me any advice.

      @j-toz Před 11 měsíci +2

      @@BeeBee-tb2it 12-14 months seems excessive. I would think as long as you're fully weight-bearing that you would travel relatively fine. I traveled by plane in February (~4 months post-op) and wore compression socks to reduce any swelling. Granted, my flight was a *lot* shorter than what yours would be. The only thing I regretted was forgetting my cane at home because it was a lot of walking on my departure dates since I had a layover. I went to a pharmacy near my hotel to get a second one and did just fine. But yeah, other than what your surgeon said regarding travel I had the same restrictions.
      Honestly my PT and one of my coaches at my gym were way more helpful than the surgeon. My PT told me to start going back to the gym to do upper body until I was out of the boot, and otherwise practice my home exercises while I'm there too. It was more for my mental health than anything and I'm glad she gave me that clearance and that the gym owner was very accommodating. I was discharged from PT last month since she was going on maternity leave but told me to keep doing what I was already doing (strength training and yoga). Now I'm back to my pre-injury activity level as far as frequency per week, but still building that strength and mobility back up. No kidding when they say it takes a long time, but it will get there, as frustrating as it may be.

      I had trimalleolar fracture June 28, 2023, and just getting real about expectations. It will be a lot longer than I thought I’d ever getting normal ROM. Doing PT and exercise, this video helped!

    • @j-toz
      @j-toz Před 8 měsíci

      @@pamheward8819 Tell me about it. I'm close to a year out now and literally counting the days to get this metal removed. The nerve sensitivity is what gets to me, plus I've developed plantar fasciitis in both of my feet. I do my stretches from PT and I've gone back to my workout routine, but it is really stubborn.
      I only just got back to doing full squats with a barbell about 2 months ago because I could not control my foot to stay flat. It has been such a struggle and I've even broken into tears in the gym a few times because I get so frustrated.

    I've broken my right ankle twice in 2 years. Second time required surgery. I've used two different scooters & this time around I used a SwivelMate & it is head & shoulders above the other one because of how tight a turn it can make. It folds up. It's hugely expensive to buy but I rented one for about what I would have paid for a cheap one & have been really happy with it. I don't really want a scooter after this is all over so happy to ship it back. Shipping was free both ways. You just pay by the week & then you pay 12 bucks for a UPS pickup. What a deal. I'd do it again exactly the same way. It's the Mercedes Benz of scooters.
    If you have a boot with an air pump, unfortunately because it's in the front it will press into the pad of the scooter which is not great. I didn't realize that when I got my boot. I would have asked for a different one. Too bad they didn't put it on the side.

    Thanks so much for the info you presented! I am recovering from a trimalleolar fracture and surgical correction with plates, screws, bolts, etc. You offered a great deal of reassurance that I'm doing much of my recovery right! I am worried I didn't wear my boot enough however considering I have literally been sitting on my butt for 6 weeks, I don't know if if matters. Headed to first PT tomorrow and I'll definitely be watching your other videos!

    Hi.. i am from Nigeria. Thank you for the video.. am super glad to see this video hoping it will be helpful to me in time to come.. please i had an ankle injury on my right leg one month ago and the big bone (Tibia) came out of my flesh causing a big wound, while the small bone (fibula) got broken. But after the surgery the (fibula) have been fixed with some irons to keep it strong while it heals which was stitched with no visible wound but the (Tibia) was fixed back to it usual position and was stitched a little which closed only 10 percent of the wound leaving 90 percent of it opened. Because the doctor said is not good to stitch it all closed because the flesh that the bone popped out from was already dead before the surgery so he cut them off meaning i have to wait for the flesh to grow again.. please my QUESTION IS: can i do these exercise while the wound is still open and not yet totally healed or should i wait till the flesh wound is totally healed before i start this exercise? Please a Quick reply will be so HELPFUL 🙏. i am in need of the help. Thank you.

    Great info doc. Thank you so much.
    I have an ankle fracture (lateral malleolus). I said no to cast. My doc put me on ankle brace and asks me to wear boot on top of braces during day time.
    Its been a month & fracture didn't heal yet.
    When I wear boot on top of brace, its hurting & feels like that's probably causing delay in my healing. But when I am just wearing brace, no pain when I am just resting.
    I am not walking & using knee rover. Any suggestions doc?

    Good tips. I am in a cast for a month (10 more days to go!), then will transition to the CAM boot. Physical therapy will start two weeks after that.
    I bought an elevated toilet seat, a knee scooter, and an iWalk crutch. I use the knee scooter to get around the house and while out shopping once a week. I use the iWalk crutch in conjunction with my regular crutches to be able to get up and down our outdoor deck stairs. The iWalk gives me a base for my injured leg so my casted leg isn’t swinging in the wind. I suck at just using regular crutches. Also bought a cover for my toes on my casted leg and a cushioned pad for the knee scooter.
    Paying attention to nutrition- have been taking the vit D, B1, B6, B12, and a multi with iron. Drinking a protein drink with 30 gm of protein. Doing non-weight bearing exercises every day (in bed leg raises front, inner, rear, and outer) and chair cardio a couple of times a week.
    Out of work on FMLA and waiting on short term disability.
    Thanks for all the info. Tells me I’m on the right track.

  • @AmyB1961
    @AmyB1961 Před rokem +3

    To visit my orthopedic surgeon was nearly $1,500 per visit. That was only to have him tell me that the x-rays look good, and to come back in 4 weeks for more x-rays. He never actually looked at my leg. I had a lateral malleolus fracture. Not having insurance, I had to stop going in, and cancelled my last appt. He didn't tell me that breaking an ankle you usually sprain ligaments, too, but I've basically had to learn anatomy myself and now I believe I probably did some good damage to 1 or 2 tendons, plus of course some ligaments. Apparently you can't see ligaments on x-rays, so why isn't it just normal procedure to do am MRI in the first place? I've read several studies which concluded that MRIs should be standard with ankle/lower bone breaks. I had an area on my foot which kept releasing blood, but when addressing this, that's when the Doc said it's just because of the sprain. He didn't clue me into what a sprain was, but I educated myself.
    Anyway, I'm grateful for CZcams.
    I can't afford any of those shoes or anything, but I see the value in them. I'm having continued pain on the top center of my foot. That has hurt all along. It looks like tendons and ligaments are there, and I'm hoping there isn't an issue that can only be resolved with surgery, because that's not going to happen.
    I consume protein shakes with collagen powder every day, and just started the carnivore diet. Have long been doing The Root Cause Protocol, which is basically about getting nutrients balanced, especially so the body can heal itself.
    I'm also getting in the sun as much as possible. No longer taking D, because of a not-great liver.
    Ty for your videos.

    I fractured my lateral malleolus. The c emergency doctor told me no weighbearing for at least 4 weeks maybe 6. I'm in a boot when I'm up but can take it off when my foot is elevated. Should I be doing foot exercises and massage rollers etc and is it necessary to stay off it that long?

    I was walking down the stairs & I tripped missed a few steps I have a distal fibula fracture on my left leg. I have to get a ct scan done for the orthopedic doctor to determine if I need surgery. It’s agonizing to not know wether I need it or not I’m so scared of surgery.😭 I love being outdoors it’s so hard for me to stay inside I wanna get back out there already

    I have a level 2 ankle sprain. After 7 days i have extreme pain when transitioning from lyong down to vertical, even witjout putting weight on the foot. The pain lasts about 1 minute then quickly goes away and i can walk at about 90%. This extreme pain started on day 6. Is this extreme pain normal?

    The surgeon told me I would be back to walking in 6 weeks after my cast off on may 1. Started PT on may 10 and my foot is still swollen and very stiff to this day. Pt is horrible I leave crying every time I go because my PT pushes my foot back and forth so hard even if I’m crying and saying I’m in pain she keeps pushing on it because she says it’s too stiff for my age. Im suppose to be a 100% weight bearing by the end of June but I can’t even bend my big toe. Idk how in the world I’m gonna be walking it hurts so bad😢

    I fell 2 months ago and have a tear in me left anterior ligament but I get sore on the on the other side of my left ankle when I'm on it too long. I'm on light duty walking and standing for four 5 hours out of an 8 hour day. Increasing 1 hour every week. They are saying I should be getting better, but I'm still in debilitating pain if I stand on it too long. Is this normal?

      Yes and helps with swelling..it also helps with bone healing bc blood flow brings nutrients to the bone!!! Best advise i ever got and not one doctor or any video told me I looked up lymphatic drainage it considered more holistic and not like western medicine but i healed so much faster

    WILL CLICKING OF ANKLE AFTER SURGERY .. STOP? AND JOW LONG IT TAKES TO STOP
    ITS 7 MONTHS PLUS SINCE I HAD ANKLE SURGERY.. For BROKEN FIBULA & MEDIAL TIBIA .. 8 screws WITH PLATE inserted..
    THANKS FOR YOUR PENDING ANSWER😅

    • @DrTomBiernacki
      @DrTomBiernacki  Před rokem +1

      Usuallly the clicing is due to the subtalar joint moving because the muscle and ligaments are still stiff (think hamstring, glutes, lower back and behind the knees, putting more pressure on foot & ankle to bend more.

    All the creams have such a strong smell triggers my asthma. It’s 4 weeks since grade 2 ligament tear and it isn’t healing. Part of the reason is due to asthma I can’t take anti inflammatory pills. Also immobilising it was not an option. And non podiatrists in my country but the orthopedic did aske me to put on a compression sleeve. Rest been watching videos like these and have got a good brace.
