      The wii u had soul and it allowed us to buy classic games instead of just subscribing. Imagine if instead of the wii u, what we got was a switch but with the wii u's console music and shop and consumer friendliness and layout and charm. Somehow, between 2012 and 2017 Nintendo lost the magic spark that made them nintendo and became just a soulless corporation. Like yeah their games are still good, but the console itself from the lazy and quiet interface to the endless and silent shop always felt phoned in, and the joy con drift confirms it's phoned in because old nintendo was all about controller quality.

      What really ruined the Wii U is Nintendo re-releasing so many games on Switch with updated content. Good for Switch owners, but bad for people who just bought a Wii U and bad for the longevity of the Wii U also. It's great for those games to be available to a wider audience, but there was very little reason to get a Wii U afterwards. The best selling Switch game is a Wii U game after all. If the Wii U had 5-10 more solid exclusives, it could be looked at as a fond retro device one day, but nope. Wii U is only good for modding and installing hundreds of games, playing Wii games, and it's also a decent way to play DS games. We still prefer the Wii U at parties for the most part since everyone remembers the original Wii Sports fondly, but also Wii Party, Nintendo Land, Just Dance, and a few others. Xenoblade Chronicles X is the bomb, but after putting my save file on CEMU there's no looking back to the original Wii U hardware

  • @ShyGuy-op8vd
    @ShyGuy-op8vd Před měsícem +181

    Just wait 7-8 years or so. People will be looking back on the Switch fondly and saying how amazing it was while trashing Nintendo's current console, like we're seeing with the Wii U and Switch right now. It's just the cycle of nostalgia and the typical "old thing good, new thing bad" mentality. Happens everytime.
    Edit: Just wanted to tag this on. People can tout whatever advantages the Wii U has over the Switch all they want. That console almost single-handedly put Nintendo out of the home console race, to the point where Iwata had to cut his paycheck in order to make sure that his employees actually got decent pay and would keep their jobs. The Wii U was a dark and desperate time for Nintendo as a company, and no amount of "soul" or "charm" will change that.

Then I bought not one, but two switches one modded one not... and I still say the Wii U is better.

    • @hunterkeps9058
      @hunterkeps9058 Před 27 dny

      @@AlexanderScott66 Not saying you're wrong but I don't understand this viewpoint, especially looking at it now.
      The Wii U only had a handful of decent games, some were ported to the Switch which became the better, definitive versions, and others had better sequels on the Switch. The Switch has better third party support, and there's a bunch of uniquely amazing games on the Switch. You can even use the Switch portably or keep it docked if you'd like. The Joycons are comfier than the gamepad, plus the gamepad became an often time intrusive gimmick that actually harmed some games like Star Fox Zero.
      The only couple of things the Wii U had over the Switch were Miiverse, the eShop and Virtual Console, and those're gone now. It had charm... But the Switch was more accessible and faster. I just don't quite understand the opinion people have that the Wii U's better than Switch.
      Edit: Also quick note, I looked up to see if Wii U sales stopped being recorded around 2017 and onwards and didn't find anything. What I did find, was that in September 2023, one person got a Wii U in the US, with the last recorded (US) sale being in May of 2022. That was so out of the ordinary and so alarming that there were dozens of articles about it. That kinda proves that people just haven't been buying Wii Us since 2017/2018

    Nintendo got too comfortable at the top after the knockout success of the Wii. They forgot why the Wii was a success in the first place, which is because it appealed to everybody. Nintendo just figured that people who own a Wii will buy a Wii U because it is the next console. The Wii U era really humbled them, and they came out of it better than ever with the release of the Switch.

  • @knux333jw
    @knux333jw Před měsícem +6

    For giggles, I'm just gonna copy and paste my take on this debate from elsewhere.
    Basically...
    Folks are on INSANE copium with trying to say the Wii U Era was better than the Switch Era.
    Because I feel like they're just people who are HEAVILY misremembering that period out of nostalgia for its few bangers... or people who are salty at the Switch, but actually were not with Nintendo enough to understand what came before it.
    Now to give Wii U credit... its main advantages are definitely Aesthetic and Online. As it can't be denied that it has a lot of menu personality, that Switch just doesn't have. And that energy was also present in some of Nintendo's presentations. (Though granted, I feel like people don't understand that Nintendo's "quirky skits" were VERY hit or miss, and didn't actually address the system's bigger issues... But I digress...)
    Plus, actually OWNING retro games instead subscribing to a paid service for them is far better. With free online to boot.
    But when we take a look at the actual games both systems can offer... this is where everything falls apart.
    Yes, Switch got a lot milage out of ports of Wii U's games, and remastering or remaking games from other generations...
    But fact of the matter is... not only are many of those ports the definitive versions of those Wii U games, AND said refreshs of other games are often REALLY good, but Switch's own unique games are some of the best Nintendo has made. With far more hits than misses. And that's just an objective fact.
    And unlike with Wii U, where you had to wait months to get a killer exclusive like those... Switch pumps them out at a pretty great rate by comparison... and I mean, by comparison that we didn't need to wait almost entire seasons for games lol.
    And yes, let's also just ignore that Switch covers franchises and genres that Wii U needed months and sometimes YEARS to get to. Yeah Wii U had BOTW too, but it was at the end of its life. It got Splatoon 1, but it was near the end of its life span.
    It didn't have a mainline Kirby, Metroid, or Animal Crossing. While Switch covers those series, and has MULTIPLE installments for them. Like how yes, it has Xenoblade X... But Switch has the whole main Xenoblade trilogy.
    But when we talk 3rd party support. Hoooooo boi. Its a WRAP. I'm surprised the video didn't hammer this in more.
    Because 3rd party support for Wii U faded to crumbs almost i m m e d i a t e l y after its first year.
    It got so bad, INDIE DEVS were talking about how they didn't want to bring over games. INDIES. Surprised we got the few we did like Shovel Knight. Because otherwise, you were just fresh out of luck almost if you wanted anything other than Nintendo games. And even those felt sparce because of how Wii U felt like it would barely put enough of them out.
    As to where with Switch, do I really gotta explain how much more varied the 3rd party support is? How much more consistently Nintendo puts out their games now that they understand HD development better? Like come the heck on man...
    Anyway. Sorry for the long comment. This video itself was a neat breakdown.

    • @AlexanderScott66
      @AlexanderScott66 Před měsícem

      But can the Switch play Wii or Gamecube games, emulated or native? How many are cloud gaming? How many on the Switch look absolutely terrible even by handheld standards? How many are just ports of Wii U games? How many of those ports drop features?(NSMBU Deluxe dropping the Boost Challenges and Boost mode, or BotW dropping the Gamepad map) Most of the 3rd party games are completely unstable and or look like dogshit, even TotK doesn't run stablely.

    • @AlexanderScott66
      @AlexanderScott66 Před měsícem

      @knux333jw Most of the problems with the Wii U stem from poor marketing, and then Nintendo didn't help matters by not releasing many games for it, giving noone a reason to buy it and turn their opinion around. The closest they got was Splatoon and Mario Maker that got people buying it, but it was too little too late. Now, if they pumped out those games, BotW, and a Metroid or Kirby game at launch or within the first year, then I can guarantee the console would have succeeded leagues better.
      Which isn't really a problem with the console itself, in fact the graphics were about comparable to PS3/Xbox360 Graphics, and the CPU wasn't too shabby either, so developers definitely could port those games over with little to no loss in quality. However, the Switch is significantly weaker than PS4, so porting over any games are going to come with a lot of drawbacks, which is what you see with the MANY problems in nearly every 3rd party game. Most 3rd party games are CPU intensive, but the Switch is really only decent in the GPU department. And no matter how good you're GPU is, if your CPU is bad, you're still gonna get a lot of shadowing errors, pixelation, and graphical errors. The Wii U balanced it for the most part so you could have a good looking game that ran well, but the Switch leaned so heavily in the graphics and the cpu is such dogshit that it bottlenecks.

    I’m a big fan of both consoles, but honestly, I think a lot of the arguments favoring the Wii U are based on potentially a lot of people not remembering a lot of the bad business decisions Nintendo made during the Wii U’s days of relevancy or the ridiculously slow rate we got games for it (except for maybe 2014), are ignoring them because they’re no longer an issue and they want to focus on stuff like the main menu (which I can agree is a step back aesthetically) or the games with the free update model, or were just not there when it all happened. I love both consoles but I can see why the Switch got the spotlight way more.

    • @AlexanderScott66
      @AlexanderScott66 Před měsícem +2

      The slow releases were based on people not buying it in the first place. It was all down to poor marketing, which doesn't reflect on the quality of the console. And even then, there were still more new games on Wii U than Switch when comparing the ratio of unique AAA games to total AAA games when you get rid of cloud gaming, ports, remakes, NSO, etc. on both ends. The Switch is almost entirely comprised of that stuff, even getting rid of two features of NSMBU for the port(boost mode, and boost challenges), meanwhile, the Wii U had: NSMBU+LU, Splatoon, SMM1, Captain Toad, BotW, Nintendo Land, 3d World. Switch has Odyssey, Wonder, TotK, Kirby Star Allies, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and I guess Bowser's Fury, if you want to consider that as a game). When it comes to backward compatibility after homebrewing, Wii U can play EVERY game prior to it, except Virtual Boy, 3ds and the 8 DSi exclusives at 60fps(though there is a homebrew emulator for virtual boy). Switch can play up to GBA and n64 at 60fps when docked. Overclocking it barely allows DS games to run at 30 fps, and Wii and Gamecube games barely run, period without having to be built from the ground up so it can run.
      Edit: Also note that TotK can barely play 30fps in handheld or 60fps when docked and actually NEED overclocking to run them at a steady framerate.

      As will happen when you run almost twice the lifespan and port all your last gen games over... And then make users pay extra to play old games. When you factor in homebrewing, the Wii U actually has a similar number of if not more games since it can play it's games and all other games ever made with it's built in software, and Virtual Boy with a homebrew emulator. Switch can only play the few Switch exclusives, ports of select Wii U, Wii, and Gamecube games, and then the catalog of N64, GBA, GB, NES, and SNES games. Most of the 3rd party are cloud gaming or run terribly and you're actually better off running them off a Raspberry Pi of all things. No DS, can barely run other Wii and Gamecube games. Meanwhile, Wii U gets ALL of: GB, GBC, GBA, DS, NES, SNES, N64, Wii, Gamecube, and Wii U games, with homebrew VB emulator.

It had backwards compatibility, had ported games from before the Wii that you could buy, the online service cost like a quarter or something, it had Miiverse, and the games utilized the gamepad to tv gimmick. It was an amazing console. The only thing that makes the switch better in my opinion is the luxury of having a portable home console, upgraded graphics, and better shop for indie games. Other than that, the Wii U slapped. I will say that it does upset me that some hated the Wii U without really giving it a try, or are only shifting opinions because they wanna hop on the bandwagon. As for backwards compatibility, yes it was nice to play Wii games on the Wii U, but having to play games with the classic controller and not the wii U pro controller was annoying. I... Really hated the Wii U. It came out at a time where I desperately needed a form of entertainment that wasn't Minecraft, but nothing it did really grabbed my attention. The games were either bad, good if you were into certain niches, compromised, or just bland. It was depressing and kinda made me hate the gaming industry for a while.
    The console itself was just meh. I couldn't use the Wii backwards compatibility because my sensor bar was broken, and none of the other features really popped to me. Yes, the menus did have more charm, but they were laggy, and it's not like I spent much time in the menus anyway since I just wanted to play games. The gamepad was clunky and uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time, and I hated the gimmick it introduced. I also didn't use the Eshop or Virtual Boy but looking back, they admittedly look nicer than the Switch's alternatives.
    The Wii U was causing huge financial issues for the Wii U and put them in the red for a long time, and I was getting ready to give up on Nintendo but then bam, the Switch came out, and everything about it just seemed better. I could actually take it anywhere I wanted to go, the joycons, while they had some issues, were far better than the Wii U's controller (And more colourful). The adverts were less cringey, and contrary to what everyone's saying, I felt it had far more love put into the marketing than anything the Wii U had. Like with 1-2 Switch how ya had 'farmer vs gamer for the milking game', that was awesome!
    Not to mention all the games on the Switch were huge step ups from what the Wii U had. It felt like the possibilities with the games soared far higher than the last console. Heck, it even ported and improved upon several games that were on the Wii U, or straight up made better alternatives to them (Like Smash Ultimate from Smash U).
    The Switch certainly ain't perfect, and there's some stuff the Wii U did better, but to me, the Switch did far, FAR more good than the Wii U ever did, and easily outbalanced the downsides. If you prefer the Wii U over the Switch, fair enough I won't argue. But I'll never agree that the Wii U could even hold a candle to the Switch overall. The sales speak for themselves.

    You straight up missed so many hardware features of the Wii U...
    The gamepad had a mic, camera, and IR blaster to control the TV, and the system was backwards compatible with Wii discs and also Wii accessories. Tonnes of controller options, proper pointer controls with the sensor bar, and the controllers are better than Switch's. The Joy Cons are the worst controllers Nintendo have ever made. They're cheap, not ergonomic and are prone to drift.
    The Wii U had way more character than the Switch just like the 3DS does. Sure, there are collectively more games on the Switch because of all the ports, but the interface, apps and features feel incredibly bare bones compared to the Wii U.

      Most of those things were pretty niche and not too many people cared about them. I'd rather have a console that I can take anywhere, and can put to sleep without turning off, over something that has a mic, camera or IR blaster that I'd rarely use. Plus the backwards compatibility with the Wii only worked if you had a working Wii sensor bar + Wii remotes.
      I can also navigate the menus on the Switch easier than the Wii U's that kept lagging, and games load faster on the Switch which to me, matters as much as the charm of the Wii U.
      The controllers weren't great... But the Wii U gamepad sucked. It was clunky, heavy, uncomfortable to hold, and introduced a forced gimmick that straight up soured the experience of some games like Star Fox Zero. The joycons were light, comfy, and I loved how you could slip them into the Switch's gamepad OR slip it into an actual controller. It had its issues, but they weren't that bad, and were the result of the joycons degrading over time. A problem easily fixable by getting another pair eventually.
      Heck the games on the Switch were far better than the Wii U's games. Each of the Wii U's games were bad or compromised, the Switch's were just... Good

      @@hunterkeps9058 I'm sorry, but I feel like we're talking about different consoles here. Your take has a very fanboyism tone to it. I'm gonna guess you didn't actually own a Wii U because half of what you're saying is backwards, which I can't take seriously.
      Yes, backwards compatibility with Wiimotes and the sensor only worked if you had them, obviously, but the thing is most people did. If you didn't, they were cheaper than Joycons and even some games that needed them came bundled with them. Isn't backwards compatibility a good thing? More options for players, and you can save money, so I don't know why you're trying to find flaws in it. The joycons are expensive for what you get.
      Speaking of joycons, how are the joycons comfortable and the Wii U gamepad is uncomfortable? The Wii U gamepad while clunky at least has weight to it and a form factor you can hold comfortably. Proper analog sticks too. It's not meant to be taken outside with you so having a traditional form factor makes sense. The joycons are not ergonomic at all, period. You can't even argue with that because they're literally just flat pieces of plastic. They don't fit into the contours of our hands. They were designed with portability, size and weight in mind, not comfort, and it shows. Compromises were made. The analog sticks are non standard and are smaller, which is why they have been so prone to drift. A solution is to just buy a new pair? You either work for Nintendo or are just in denial. 'Just' buying a new pair to a flawed design is a laughable solution.
      Funnily I've never once felt my Wii U was laggy. There's a difference between load times and lag. Wii U can have load times, but the Switch has literal LAG. The eshop is atrociously laggy. The Wii U eshop is undoubtedly a smoother experience.
      Each of the Wii U's games were bad? What? The Wii U undoubtedly has a great selection of first party games. How are all these games bad? You're telling me you don't own any of the ports that came out on the Switch? I bet you do, but I guess they must be good now because they're on the Switch right? 😂 Yes, like I said, the Switch has a better library as a whole, but you can't say the Wii U games were bad when a good chunk of the Switch's good games are Wii U ports. If you didn't realize, the Switch's best selling game is a Wii U game🤷
      Look, I like my Switch, but it's not without its flaws and there's no problem admitting that. Nintendo focused on certain features but in the process had to compromise in many other areas. Every other Nintendo console before it was an improvement on its predecessor in basically every category (handhelds and home consoles), but the Switch broke that because of its hybrid design. Again, compromises.

      @@manbearpig5346 Nup, I got a Wii U, played it for a while, hardly used any of the side features apart from the intrusive ones, and it wasn't all that satisfying.
      I'm not tryina say that backwards compatibility's a bad thing, it's great. Just that the Wii U to Wii requires more stuff to work rather than say, a PS2 or PS3, and since my motion sensor bar stopped working, I couldn't access what could've been a great feature, all because Nintendo didn't provide an alternative to move the cursor around. You can't even use it to play Gamecube games.
      Again, it's great, IF you can get it to work.
      I guess I never got any of the games that required the motion sensor though, so that could've helped.
      I just prefer the joycons. I think the weightlessness works to its advantage, always felt the gamepad was just a bit too heavy. Plus, I hated how the gamepad's right analogue stick was above the buttons, that always tripped me up since every other controller does it the opposite way.
      And sure the joycons aren't the most ergonomical but they still worked, and I mostly use the joycons with the comfort grip which do fit in my hands contours.
      I may have been reaching a bit with saying "Just get a new controller lol". I still think it's a solution if a crappy one, but the drift genuinely sucks. I'd still personally take it over the gamepad though.
      I've seen the eShop comparisons and yeah, the Switch's lags. And I Just tested the main menu and you're right, no lag.
      However, hopping in and out of games was a different beast. For the Wii U, it took 12~ seconds to boot up, and another 15 secs to get into a game.
      As for the Switch, not only is it quick to boot up/start a game, but you can suspend them, making the boot up time even faster.
      I didn't elaborate enough on the games. I did like a fair amount of games on the Wii U like SM3DW, Pikmin 3, Smash Bros, NSMBU, and some others, but they all felt... Kinda compromised? Like some of them were good but not all that interesting, or there were some issues that kept them from being great. And yeah there's quite a few games that straight up suck like the MP series, Star Fox, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival.
      I'll admit there's a few Switch games that sucked too.
      And yes I've gotten quite a few ports, but I take the stance that if a game was ported and improved in any way, then the credit goes to the console that made those improvements. So yes, to me they're Switch games.
      I'm glad the Wii U made them in the first place (Again I like them, they're good), but I thank the Switch for improving them, majorly so in some cases. If they were JUST ported without any improvements, I'd give full credit to the Wii U, but most of them had upgrades to their originals.
      Fyi I think it's fine even if most of a console's library is just ports. The GBA did great and most of the games are just remakes/ports of NES & SNES games.

      @valentds Natively just means that the primary software runs it without additional software to interpret it. VC games require the emulator, Wii U->emulator->VC. Wii U and Wii games run natively because the Wii U's primary software is able to directly interpret it: Wii U->Wii U title or for Wii: Wii U becomes vWii->Wii title. GameCube runs the same way as Wii games(unless it's directly injected via modding, but that's another can of worms)
      Or another example. In Windows, if you try to open a brand new file type, it'll ask you "Open with what app?" To which it'll give options like "Notepad" or "Photos". All those programs listed run natively within the Windows OS, the primary software. The file you're trying to open doesn't run natively, it requires a daughter program of the primary software to interpret it: "Notepad" or "Photos". So a .nds file can't run natively on Windows, but a ds emulator can, which in turn interprets the .nds file.
      The Wii U software directly can interpret GameCube files, but Nintendo removed the drive that can read it. By injecting the game into a Wii title, it bypasses the drive check because it's a digital title, it changes itself into vWii to run what it thinks is a Wii title, then vWii, now the primary software detects it as a GameCube game and runs it as such.
      If this doesn't make sense as to how GameCube runs natively on Wii U, basically GameCube game gets injected into Wii game. That puts a flag on the GameCube title that stock Wii U thinks is a Wii title. Wii U changes to vWii and allocates enough resources to allow it to run the Wii game. vWii boots and reads the file, skipping the flag. vWii recognizes it as a GameCube game and allocates its resources to running as a Gamecube: Wii U becomes vWii->Gamecube
