Theme Song by Hello Control: bit.ly/hellocontrol - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I’ve been subbed for the past 7 years, oh my goodness. I didn’t realize how fast time flies, I was just a sophomore in high school trying to make short films and now I’m a part time photographer and nursing student. That’s insane.
I subbed when I was 11, I'm 17 now lol. Time is crazy.
@@wedontexist369 samee
@@samyehya time is deeply fascinating!
I subscribed when I was 14 (in 2011). I'm 23 now and interning at a the production company that made THE GALLOWS. I've watched every single episode since then. Never missed a single one. The only CZcams channel that I haven't fallen out of love with.
@@wedontexist369 same im 16 but I was 9
Film Riot is one of the reasons I’m an award-winning filmmaker. Real talk.
God Bless You!
Can you do film contest again? one that has no high requirement for eligibility 😊 Id like to join on one
me too
No light, outside, handhald, no dialogue action short film 😂
Monday challenge comeback?
Me three!!
I know I have no chance against more experienced filmmakers but I'd love to take part in a contest as well! Specialy if it has lower stakes, no big prices just people having fun. I feel as if the price is too high I get self concious about being a beguiner and not having high end work.
I'd like to see a more in-depth version where you film yourself doing these steps for an actual story and explain why you are making the choices. A kind of "watch me work" type of video, which is a lot like BTS videos. And we all learn more from BTS videos that anything else. ;^)
Please do this!!^
Awesome, thank you so much Film Riot!! This is super helpful. And Milanote!! AH! Its exactly what I've been looking for!
I've been watching you guys for years.. I would watch your videos nonstop throughout the learning process in the Film Industry, and I thank you for all you've taught me.
What you guys do is very, very appreciated, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks so :)
This is the perfect video right now, I’m currently working on a college final project and need as much inspiration and advice as I can get! You are a life saver!
Been watching Film Riot since the start and my glass of film knowledge is still getting filled up. Thanks a tons!!
This is pure gold! Thank you so much for sharing how to prep before filmmaking. Music is HUGE in helping me create stories as well, and I too have so many spotify playlists, one for reach mood (even sub-genres of moods).
I’m starting on that look book immediately. I filmed some things last night and my scene was completely ruined by mistakes that I made in pre production. The lighting was absolutely abysmal and my framing undoubtedly sucked. But these mistakes weren’t made without purpose. I learned a lot last night and made a list if things to fix. So it’s back to pre production and screen testing my ideas before I move back to production. Thank you guys for this video!
I just found ShotDeck like a week ago and it has been INCREDIBLE!
i think it literally saved my life rn
You have shown us a lot of things,
You guys are amazing, thank you 🙏
4:19 YESS Brigsby Bear!!!!!
I commented almost a year ago that I thought you guys were just making ads but I see now how dumb that was. Film Riot is still an amazing resource and y’all have to pay the bills, obviously, but more than that - learning about good products is legitimately helpful to filmmakers. Good luck on getting your feature made!
Great as always, Ryan! Your content has evolved so perfectly. When I was a young 12 y/o filmmaker I learned about how to make fake gunshots, blood, and more fun effects. As I mature throughout film school your videos seem to present mature ideas and concepts. Thank you so much!
Ah this is great. Great job guys. I was just thinking about the feeling of making a decision on the vision that brings everything together, but completely on your own. All up to you...
Very important video for filmmakers, especially for those starting out. Its not just about what, where and how, but most importantly, Why. Once we know WHY, we know the rest automatically. Thanks!
this could not have come at a better time for me. I'm just going into pre-production for my short film and this is extremely helpful. Thanks film riot!
i love this, i am wanting to be a director and film riot has helped soo much
Thanks 🌎 Greetings from Colombia. The Venezuelan immigrant writer 🇻🇪
we appreciate all of your videos. Very informative as ussual. 🤟
I’m in prepro on my first feature, decided to try milanote per this video, I am never using any other app again. This is perfection for how my brain organizes things and I had never heard of them. Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing this, Ryan, it was very helpful as I'm in the midst of pre- production on a major feature. your video was my " decompress moment" and it came in the right time!
ShotDeck is absolutely amazing. SIgned up for free to the beta version and it made me feel so satisfied. Thank you for bringing them to us.
You guys are probably the only channel that does videos like these. and i appreciate it so much
Simply awesome and brilliant!!! Thank you guys as always!!! 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
I love love love shotdeck and have never looked back. everytime you post a vid it has so much useful info, thanks
Yes number one , I always look forward to film riot I’ve learned so much
I signed up for Milanote after you showed us what you do, and it's awesome! I'm using it for my animations and for planning a revision on my novel, doing just what you did here, mood, theme, characters. So flexible and easy to use, I might plan my kitchen remodel there, too. Just signed up for the Shotdeck beta, because that looks brilliant. Thanks for another awesome episode!
Film Riot really educated, nurtured and entertained a whole generation of filmmakers, they deserve their flowers! Thank you Film Riot!
Always great info. Thanks for Milanote... and also for existing.
Been struggling with articulating my ideas , really helpful video
The notes that he creates about the character is so valuable and MUST be shared with the actors as soon as possible. The actors many times are forced to create their own backstory and most likely it doesn't mesh with the Director's or Writer's vision.
I'd love to see how you guys go about creating a visual pitch deck to send to producers!
Thanks for this Ryan and crew! You folks are A W E S O M E ! ! !
Thanks for the great information. I'll be shooting my film very soon.
This info is right on time. Thank you film riot.
Shotdeck looks incredible. So far I've done everything by feel but framing your ideas in music and shots sounds like a better way to create an idea.
I found this useful even as an aspiring DP! It's interesting to hear other peoples process since I'm developing what works best for me as well.
One of the most useful FR videos of this year , way to go Ryan & team , I would love more of these "once in a month but useful af" rather than 50 videos a month with no concrete education behind it
Oh lord, I remember telling an editor when he was editing a commercial and base the cut on the theme, the product and the vibe of the restaurant. I can never stop empathizing and learning something new from Film Riot
Omg I'm signing up for shotdeck right now
This is key! 🔑
I would LOVE to pick your brain on how to get around intellectual copyright when trying to make a fan film for something that would technically exist within a current franchise. For example, making a short film within the Harry Potter universe. This has been something I’ve really wanted to pursue but I don’t quite know the logistics of it.
Theres a fanfilm on youtube now thats a harry potter fam film idk how they got around that thou
Lots of the people in a software group I'm in do that (one guy is doing the Timothy Zahn Thrawn books, and another just put out a gorgeous "prequel" to the first Alien film). It depends largely on how picky the original IP holder is. These guys make It very clear they don't own the rights, and that they don't make any money on them at all. It might help that these are animations instead of live action, as well, I'm not sure.
Thank you film riot
Very usefull app.thank you sir...
Thx a lot for how making dreams come real. Thx a lot.
Aye, references. These also changed my whole creative process.
Also they let your team dip into the world and characters.
milanote is just too good!!
Lawrence Sher woke up one morning and said : *I want to be a god*
8:06 - "your characters have to wear something."
Or do they 😏😏
SHOTDECK is literally save my ass for months already. Totally recomended for shotlisting eventho the image library is quite small
Awesome video
oh man I need this app
This Milanote looks nice
What's a great sound pack that's at a good price, thank you for this video.
Love brother, wish I had camera to film
Good video I wish I knew everything you do in Film making I’ve been trying to work on my short film for a long time I have no actors I have a little gear and a lot of time A lot of ideas what should I be doing? Please help
Hi! Is there any channel like this but about sound design for film? Great channel anyways.
I don’t have much vibranium, but I will try my best Ryan.
0:46 is that shot from Media Division?
Can you guys pleeeeaseee do a pure compositing course for After Effects for incorporating stock footage and 3d? I have your current After Effects course but the quality of the compositing of the stuff you post on your CZcams channel is on a different level! Im sure I’m not the only person who would pay good money to learn how to composite like you guys!
This isn't linked to this video, but could you make a tutorial on how to make the "dust" effect used in Avengers Infinity War?
Is there any way you guys can show how to make cgi outside of a window? Like keep the reflections and everything the same, but overlay the window texture over it, I’d love for a video for this. I’m trying to go for an ‘amateur footage’ vibe for a short clip in a video, just want it as realistic as possible
I really would like to know just how many active subscriptions you guys have for Film Riot ^^
Good
Very important tips, thanks for the lesson! However, this app is great, (and I know its a sponsored video), but with Notion, which is free, you can create something very similar workboard, its very similar and can be very selective.
What’s the overlay assets used in the video?
How is it going with your feature "There comes a knocking"? Still looking forward to it....
what´s the difference between tone and look book?
It’d be so cool so see a Scarlet Witch Chais magic VFX effect
sorry, but all I can think about is the guy from the last video talking about focus pulling from the heart... also, earing choosing is a weird flex!
1. Vibranium
2. Mind Stone
3. The powers of Thor
New to filmmaking here! Does anyone know how I can keep my shots visually consistent when shooting on set?
Use the same lens for all your shots (move camera/actor for shot size) or use cinema lenses from the same manufacturer. Also do white balance with every new set up. Also it helps to take pictures of your shot to reference for later scenes/ shots.
I havent been here for a while. Does domain.com still sponsor Film Riot?
I love transitions, but the glitchy Xs and Os used this time around are a bit much.
Or is this some sort of weird scavenger hunt that I don't understand?
Have you ever thought of producing a superhero short film. With various vfx

Milanote doesn’t work offline, which sucks.
I thought it was a vfx tutorial for creating VISION!!!!!@ xD
I can't seem to just film a movie, what do I do. I have some gear
Art from Nicolas WHAT?
The most unfair thing is that I want nothing more than to make movies, but not everyone gets to.
I like Film Riot but it seems like half their videos are just ads
I want to see another short movie from you guys, but a lighthearted one instead of dark and gloomy. No offense to the dark theme, but sometimes something too dark is hard to relate to for many people.
6:51. Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Easily one of THE most recognizable women in the industry. What movie is that, though?
It might be 10 Cloverfield Lane. John Goodman is in the shot and he appeared in the movie with MEW
First!
Great video! I just made a video that's similar, discussing creativity vs gear, and growing as an artist!
Hello Film riot, am from Uganda, africa, can a film riot shirt be delivered here?
Another long ad :( I miss unsponsored content
FT. Wanda Maximoff
I don't have a cast.
This is helpful if you are making a concept album or writing a book.
You speak quickly

I finally got my invites today from here invites.monster . I'm loving it! 垃圾。
Who in the world is going to start noticing the meaning of the colors of the drapery on a set? That's crazy talk in my opinion. When I watched "There Comes a Knocking" and saw the actor's clothes from her in that jogging outfit all I thought of was that she went for a run. No one is, and hardly anyone cares about it. Most people when they watch a film are just laying back and watching it for the visual nature of the film and the sounds that are echoed from it. My friend let me noticed this when he was talking about Star Wars, saying, "The only reason why people watch Star Wars is to see people fight with lightsabers." so no one cares about story and theme in film. The only people who care about story and theme in film are those who research it, not those who watch it for entertainment and pleasure like most people do.
I miss my wife
Hmmph it's so obvious. first you will need the power to alter realities and have a mind stone. Oh. that is not the vision you were talking about..
Terrific, but too much Milanote, I'm sick of seeing it.
Lawrence Sher woke up one morning and said : I want to be a god
