i still have (and use) that exact same 10 drawer roll-cabinet and exact same top chest but no side box. bought them in 1974 brand new for $750.00. this video went straight to my heart. salute.
I hope you kept that 914 Porsche, I had one back in 78 and loved it. I wish I had of kept it, it's worth a bunch now especially in good condition. Nice job on the Mac tool box, I just bought one, it was a 92 model.
I am a powder coater for Mac Tools in Ohio and it's great to see someone restore a classic box and make it look good again. Also the box was actually diped in a 15,000 gallon tank of red paint and the paint was electrified to the box and drawers
@@tacet1898 I think you might dig my Proto roller bottom box from 1979. I just got it at a garage sale last week. Best part is it was 15$ I really like vintage Proto tools made in the USA. The roller I have is identical to Mac, Matco, and a few others. I wonder if they were rebranded? Best part of it all is My snap on Kra 58b top test fits perfectly on the Proto roller.
bought an old '78 snap-on, top-and-bottom chest for $600. It's not rusty, just has a lot of grease and grime. Was looking for some videos on the best way to grease the slides, and found this vid. Nice!
Just picked up an old 2 piece box today at a yard sale for 25 bucks... Not a big name but a 70's box is still better than most today. Love that ol MAC!! Good job.
I just received the exact same 3 piece set from my Dad, who got it from my grandpa when he passed. I can't wait to restore it in a similar fashion to everything you've just done. Although I have quite a bit more rust.. soo sanding for daayys. Still undecided if I want to maintain that red finish, since it's kind of a signature to the vintage boxes. I'll have to link my resto video when I complete it! Great work. Also, I've read that Wax was/is the preferred way to treat the slide functioning bars, since they aren't bearings that need oiled. Wax also doesn't collect dirt and debris when it dries, but still allows smooth sliding. These were done this way in the past though, so I think with the new chemical advances a solid Dry Lubricant will be the best choice!
Certainly much better (for the price) than anything you can buy today. Sure you can still get a quality tool box, but you have to put it on a payment plan!
Glad to see there are still guys out there who love bringing the forgotten shit of the past back life. I'm restoring a 1941 Kennedy 8 drawer machinist box. Great video it was kind of like watching myself working on a project. My kids told me I should put my work on youtube. No way I spend enough time just working on the shit I restore let alone trying to film it. God Bless you, I don't know how you do it.
Ha! I just got a Kennedy box for my lathe tools. It’s in pretty good shape, so I’m gonna leave it be. As far as filming goes, it wasn’t too bad on the toolbox videos. I just hit ‘record’ and let it capture everything. On the moped videos, it probably takes me twice as long to do everything when I am messing with the camera.
It's probably the grease of that 1970s era. The bicycle hubs from that 1970s all have that wax grease. Brilliant idea with the heat gun for the dried up grease!
Restoration looks great! Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the white lithium grease tip above. I am in the middle of a Craftsman toolbox restoration. Using Rustoleum too but got the quart can and spraying it on with a gun. Found videos that gave mixing ratios with acetone and hardener. Should have used more acetone, went on a little too thick but most of it leveled out.
Great job. I understand the dedication on it. That’s a great buy right there. I have a few boxes that I’m starting to work through myself. Nice and thorough video as well.
David Fixes His Shit I understand that. I bought 6 boxes this year haha. I did sell two and I’m planning to sell more. I didn’t know how I wanted to set up the work space, and I got too optimistic about my time to work on the boxes. Haha
I recently found a old beat-up Tool box on Online no name on it or markings any where of what brand it is. I paid $120. It came with Top and bottom. I was just going to rattle can it and call it a day. But the sliders where sticking i noticed it was way too solid to be a cheap one. It has a garage door style gate. After doing some research on how to remove the sliders it was the Snap-On version that worked to remove it. 1940-50's era. and just like you this quick cheap investment has become a project in itself. Thanks to you I kinda know how to go about most of it now, only difference is mine has a ton of dents and its solid steel. some of sliders are bent as well. now my work area is over run with tool box parts and my wife hates it since this was supposed to solve the tools/parts everywhere situation lol. I found the same exact one on Ebay going for around $2k, so complaints have stopped since this thing is going to outlive me and be passed down to my boy.
What a lucky little box, that is a fine job you’ve done bringing it back to service! You definitely scored yourself a classic and that box has found itself a new workplace to serve with dignity again.
Thanks for the great video. I picked up a tool box the other day on FaceBook Marketplace that looks similar to your small chest on top, and it is in similar condition. I got it for $50. The lady I bought it from said her GrandPa bought it in 1933 when he started his lawnmower repair service. I don’t know the make, and I am sure it isn’t from 1933, but I plan to restore it and use it as my metric toolbox. I learned a lot from your video. Your restoration looks awesome. Thanks for posting.
Alonso- thanks! I let my obsessive side come out when doing these. It’s nice to know that you have cleaned and touched every single nut and bolt when it’s all back together.
Dude, that looks friggen great. I found myself smiling when you finished painting it prior to putting it back together and thought, "I really need to do this to my tool boxes." Great job, man. Great. Job.
Wow! I really appreciate the praise! I really love how it came out. The best part didn’t even get filmed - going through all my tools and organizing them. Maybe weird, but I loved that part!
Absolutely agree. When I got my dad's tool box there was some time when I went through combining our tools into one box. His was an old Dayton Mfg. brand, very similar to your Mac box. I then found an older Waterloo that I purchased for just my tools. Turns out that one was larger than my dad's, so I decided to merge our tools into that one and plan to tackle bringing up my dad's box first, then the Waterloo.
my dad's old snap-on box buried in the back of his garage, i think he did it on purpose. i haven't seen it in years. last i seen it, it was dirty but worked well.
Looks Great! I restored a 1968 Snap-On Box and a similar MAC Box also. For future reference anyone looking for a paint to match I found that Ford Red is almost exact match to Snap-On.
Hey thanks Jeff! I keep having to keep myself from buying other old toolboxes from Craigslist. Now that I know the Ford Red secret, I may have to get another just to try it out!
Glad I could provide some inspiration! There was a 12-15 drawer snap on on Craigslist here in Norfolk a couple of months back for $250. My wife had to physically restrain me from going to buy it 😎
The box came out great. I did the same thing with an old Snap On box that I bought for $200. Very labor intensive but it was really worth it when it was all said and done.
Have watched this a few times as I am restoring an old Craftsman. It is surprisingly labor intensive. I am at the shit ton of sanding phase. It was either doing this or buying something new. Haven't decided if I made the correct decision. Guess it is about the journey. Going through a lot of the same steps. Hope it turns out as well as yours. Thanks for the inspiration.
Got mine finished up a few months ago. Got some good before and after pics to look back on the project. Had to track down one of the drawer clips that was missing. I had red all over the shop too. Painted it inside and out. Satisfying project.
I’ve been wanting to find a vintage box to restore myself. I’ll personally use cerakote which is originally designed as a firearms coating. It’s easy to work with and extremely durable.
2 years old but I'd have suggested a chemical rust killer and then repaint with a clear coat as needed but no paint on the solid painted areas. Just clean and polish the original. Anyway super cool old box.

Certainly worth it. I'm sure I could've bought a nicer box brand new, but it would have been expensive, and I wouldn't have loved it as much as I love this one.

Wow thanks for this video. Decades ago I bought a medical file cabinet on wheels. It was very heavy duty and it was very cheap at the time. I've used it for years and it has filled up with junk parts.. It's a tan color. I would love to clean this out and do a Restoration like you have and strip it and paint with a tool box color. It needs some work, not so much rust as cleaning out the grease and oil collected over the years. I don't have a key for it but looking at it, I may be able to take the lock out and go get one made Thanks for the video, it shows me the steps to take an old box and bring it up to color and restore it's usefulness. Thanks Eric! I was just looking through your videos and saw you unbox that awesome SPG roller box. I've got a couple of cars that are smaller than that thing! I'd really like to get one of those one day to store some of the bigger power tools around the shop. Right now, I just have them shoved wherever I can find space. I think the extra added workbench space would be fantastic too. I can't wait to see your review of it. Thanks again for watching!
wow my brother you did an amazing job....... six years later does it still look amazing?????
Well done - allot of work, but a tool box to be proud of, and can't beat that price!

Thanks Rodney. Great info! Glad you are continuing the proud tradition of ‘made in the USA’!
I make the MAC and Proto Tool here in Dallas. I just brought a used 50th Anniversary box. I am going to restore it. This really helped.

USA made and reborn is the USA!! Love it man, Great job..
Great to see it restored. The man that fed his family with that is likely gone now.
Nice to see a youtuber that is showing folks how to economically restore their things
Dave, glad to meet you at grain, need some new videos!! Also i picked up an old two piece, top and bottom Mac Tools toolbox the same as these.
Hell yes. I love saving these old tool boxes!
Terrific job. Thanks for sharing. Looks awesome.

Awesome video. Great outcome. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
I just picked up 3 craftsman tool boxes from a guy on Craigslist cleaning out his garage for FREE!!!!! Now I’m restoring them thanks for the video 🙏🏽
You are livin the dream!!
Outstanding, Looks Great!!!
Very nice job . Those old Mac boxes are really nice.
bought an old '78 snap-on, top-and-bottom chest for $600. It's not rusty, just has a lot of grease and grime. Was looking for some videos on the best way to grease the slides, and found this vid. Nice!
Wow! It came out gorgeous.
Major transformation for sure and it looks great.
Man, that was beautiful to watch. Inspiration to refurb my (much smaller) beat up toolbox

Well done David! I was looking for a new toolbox but now this inspired me to restore an oldy. Thx
Awesome! For the same money, you wouldn’t get anything new with the same quality as those old ones.
Excellent job ..
I like those older styles of boxes , seems like they last forever ..

You mentioned the different grit of sand paper you used, but what sanding tools did you use? Hand tools? Power tools?
Love old mac tool boxs
Well worth every penny and ounce of effort!!!
Looks real nice, love those vintage tool boxes, retired my snap on box in 2016,not sure if I should paint it or not
I just picked one up and I feel your pain brother!
my dad's old snap-on box buried in the back of his garage, i think he did it on purpose. i haven't seen it in years. last i seen it, it was dirty but worked well.
Great job sir

Hey thanks Jeff! I keep having to keep myself from buying other old toolboxes from Craigslist. Now that I know the Ford Red secret, I may have to get another just to try it out!
Hi Jeff, I'm getting ready to paint my old snap on boxes. Just wondering where you get the Ford red paint from. Thanks
There is nothing like hard work to help you appreciate the outcome.
looks great! good work
Thanks!
I just got a older snap on tool box, bouta restore it soon, this video definitely going to help some !
Most definitely worth it. That’s a tool box that will get passed down, not thrown away. Thanks a bunch for watching
I think I started having second thoughts during the shit ton of sanding phase. That is a sucky job. Stick with it and you will be rewarded. Good luck!
Got mine finished up a few months ago. Got some good before and after pics to look back on the project. Had to track down one of the drawer clips that was missing. I had red all over the shop too. Painted it inside and out. Satisfying project.
Awesome! Congrats!
I’ve been wanting to find a vintage box to restore myself. I’ll personally use cerakote which is originally designed as a firearms coating. It’s easy to work with and extremely durable.
Great job!
Thanks!
2 years old but I'd have suggested a chemical rust killer and then repaint with a clear coat as needed but no paint on the solid painted areas. Just clean and polish the original. Anyway super cool old box.
Great work 👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!
I've got an old Mac MB 910 top and bottom box. Been in my barn, now going in my new shop. Way worse shape than your was! Hope I can get close to your finished product! Looks great. I got automotive paint from a friends paint supply shop. I'm planning on spraying it with my gun. Gonna use some rust convertor on it in places first. I paid $300 for it about 25 years ago, and it was used then! :) Good job buddy!
Thanks a bunch Rick! I appreciate that. Good luck with your box!
Someone selling this exact one over by me. Ab same condition. Was interested until I saw this video. Awesome job and thanks for the details. You saved me from spending regretting starting this project haha. Nice work though!
Superb!
The new color looks better than the old.
Looks awesome, hard work for sure but well worth it in my opinion.
Certainly worth it. I'm sure I could've bought a nicer box brand new, but it would have been expensive, and I wouldn't have loved it as much as I love this one.
Looks good.
Wow I see now why these boxes cost so much...great job and I'm going to restore my dad's old craftsman box..thank you
Good on ya! Make her shine!
Just bought a 1979 snap on toolbox. I have the original sales finance contract paperwork and the original price was 531.00 out the door
I bought it for150 bucks
It’s 40 years old and showing it’s age a little
The paint is dulled and faded but overall the toolbox is in great shape
I thought about going through the agony of doing the same restoration project that you did but I don’t really have time to get started on it so I started cutting the old paint off with a buffer and some rubbing compound and it seems to be bringing back some of the shine
Thanks for your video
Your toolbox looks really nice
That sounds like a hell of a purchase! Well done.
great job !
Thanks!
I enjoyed your video thank you
Good Job !
Wow thanks for this video.
Decades ago I bought a medical file cabinet on wheels. It has ball bearing wheels and five big drawers with ball bearings and the top sixth level had a flip up lid with a key lock that locked all the drawers.
I don't have a key for it but looking at it, I may be able to take the lock out and go get one made
Thanks for the video, it shows me the steps to take an old box and bring it up to color and restore it's usefulness. This old cabinet has a lot of potential that I can use for years to come.
Wow. That thing sounds awesome. Well worth restoring. Good luck, and thanks for watching and your comment!
I know it’s 2 years down the road now but if you ever run into this situation again (was on the slides was a common fix back in the day) put the slides on cheap foil pans in the oven at 150 degrees for about twenty mins. For the cabinets use a clamp light with a heat lamp. Good work looks nice.
Thanks for the tip! Will do..
Looks good
You can buy a box about that size at harbor freight for around 300 dollars... still watching and I hope the stickers stay on it 👍
I's thank'n that it turn out alot better than some of the paint jobs I've on some racers & street cars! Congratulations on you $2.00 fined! Thanks, Joe C.
Thanks Joe!!
You found out part of the reason a good tool box is so expensive. 😁
Great video and great work! What did you use to grease the rails?
the best restoration of tool box ): ): ): ):
Wow! Thanks!
I have been cleaning chrome with aluminum foil lately. Works well.
I think you nailed it. When I first started as a tech, the old guys had this vintage of Mac or Snap-on rollaway. Now I'm an older and I have the old Mac rollaway.

nice work
Thanks!
You could set up a hot box to bake them all at once, great work though and I appreciate the level of detail
