Their 'god' known as 'Sleep' is simply a literary device used to symbolize unrequited/lost love. The songs are steeped in symbolism and metaphor. It could arguably symbolize how many people feel about love and how attached it is to soul and spirituality it is for so many. Also Sturgill Simpson is a great experimental country artist.
So when you think of art. It’s open to interpretation. You see what you see at first glance of a painting or hearing something. Different emotions and different sights in how you feel or see something. Most art is open to interpretation. Designing lyrics this way are truly hard because it’s a ballad about something / someone you love.
Lyrics are extremely important for this band. It's just as good if not better than the music, highly recommend pulling up lyrics for further reactions.

The second your dad asked “ do we need lyrics?” You should’ve said yes and shown him. The ‘perceived as a cult’ thing is something you could’ve expanded on, and had a much better reaction and further explanation from him on. Don’t get big in the britches man. Don’t use heavier music as a gate without giving it context. He seems open to it, maybe more than you know. Just run with honest introspection, not pushing him for a reaction.
