I just checked the origin. Who Dey started in 1981 when the Bengals beat 5 of 6 11-5 or better teams in November and December and later played in the Superbowl. Who Dat was started (at Saints games) in 1983 when the Saints had started 5-3 (their best start recorded at the time) but their luck ultimately fell short when they finished the season 8-8. It sparked up once again when the Saints had their first winning season which I believe was in 1987.... Soooo basically, nobody copied anybody.
controversial subjects; Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans with who was "first" with mardi gras, Miami Dolphins and the Houston Oilers, who was first with their fight songs, now this, who was first with their respective chants! I can tell you this without predjudice, New Orleans adds "flavor" to ANYTHING it does and touches or innovates, HANDS DOWN! It doesn't matter if New Orleans didn't originate chants or was the "first" with mardi gras, we can take what ANYONE started and make it more popular.
@MCWAY1 As i said before, The "who dat" chant has been circulating around the New Orleans and southern La. area since the early '70s by collegiate and high schools, now whether the Saints started using it before or after the Bengals started the "who dey" chant is a matter of conjecture, who knows? GEAUX SAINTS GEAUX, REEEEPEAT!
The Who DAT Chant started in New Orleans by different area universites and highschools in the 60's and 70's. Late 70's it was heard at Saints Games but it wasn't offically adopted or trademark until 83.
I agree that who dat is much more appropriate to Louisiana. The thick cajun and creole French accents lend more to the "d" pronounciation than anything up North. If you listen to an old Cajun you'll hear what I'm talking about immediately " oh yea cher dats what I'm talkin bout"
@nola305 Not quite. The original "Who Dey" song came out, during the Bengals Super Bowl run during the late 80s. So, older football fans remember the "Who Dey" routing, especially during that era, when football teams were making songs left and right. This of course started with the Bears' Super Bowl Shuffle. The corniest of those songs BY FAR is the one done by the then-LA Rams.
and i'm sure the saints have HUGE cajun following. their too busy cheering on theiry henry and his awesome cross over to go to the world cup. who started in cincy, the saints stole it. do your hw.
AnuPlanetX, You can try to convince "these" Ben-Gals fans that New Orleans had this chant since forever, and you'll pass out from exhaustion from all of your efforts, they just won't admit it and they won't even google it either because they don't want to be wrong! We (New Orleanians know WHEN this started, but some people are knuckle-headed no matter what fan base it is (excluding Saints fans though, lol). "who dat" is a UNIVERSAL chant now!!!!!!
Actually "who dat" was a turn of the century jazz song that was turned into a cheer for the Southern University Jaguars and then a Saints chant in the 60's or 70's.
That true. I know some people from New Orleans that say WHO DAT, WHO DERE! The Bengals clearly stole that from the Saints fans. WTF? The Bengals are in Cincy. Ain't nobody CAJUN up there!
Who dat started in a hs in new Orleans in the 60's then saints fans started using it in the 79-current so no one really stole it sense we came up with who dat and u guys came up with who dey
The southeast La. callout "Who Dat" predates the Saints (1967) and is a LONG time figure of speech in (mostly) New Orleans and it goes back several generations. Nobody stole anything from anyone either way. Who Dat is not Who Dey. We have a lot of other longtime colloquial figures of speech which came out our gumbo of a language which we use down here. Oh what?!! Now you say we stole "gumbo"?!! Get real !!!!! How 'bout "Where Ya'AT!" We stole that too I suppose........
@gamelvr1 In 1991 the Cincinnati Bengals went 3-13. Its called the Internet, you are ON IT. Besides, I'd rather be wrong about it being 3 seasons in 20 than actually being a fan of a team that has 3 in 20. So I will rephrase my original statement. "Who dey? 3 winning seasons in 20 years? wow. looks like EVERYONE dey." Yup, still sounds pretty relevant. Also side note: in the 20 years PREVIOUS to the current, it was 9 out of 20. For the Steelers its 16-20 for current, and 13-20 for the previous.
i just spit my drink all over my laptop...look maybe bootsy can coach yall, i mean look how excited everyone is for the chorus? at least def coordinator
Bengals will never get into the playoffs until they stop ripping of the Saints and come up with an original chant. Only then, shall the curse be broken...
@kent504,Yours was a PERFECT explanation about this controversy (who dat / who dey). You made it simple and to the point! The BEST one so far, even better than i could've put it, lol. To satisfy those haters (the Bengals fans) who are computer literate and know how to click their mouse on "google", they should to the best of their ability type in "who dey vs. who dat" and satisfy their curiousity or doubt. I have yet to hear back from ANYONE from the "other" side saying that they did so!
@HailDaFins, When the 'Fins played the Saints, my sentiments could've gone either way, in other words, whoever won the game would've made no difference to me. Case in point! Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams! I like BOTH sisters as tennis players, so whoever won made no difference to me, lol. BTW, I miss Miami :(
@HailDaFins, First let me say we have something in common, I used to live in Miami and a supporter and fan of the Dolphins (lived in Carol City near the stadium), but my FIRST allegiance is to the Saints (My home) in New Orleans....See my username, 'reppin Miami and N.O. both, lol. why don't YOU brush-up on your english (quoting you)...."You both GOT illiteracy " ?????? Is it a contagious disease now, ha, ha. The only 'aints for the Saints is they "aint" losers any more!
@Beardman29, "who dey" sounds stupid as a fight song but the Saints song, "who dat" on the other hand is MORE popular around the Nation. This song (who dey) has no soul, no passion, no flava like New Orleans flava etc. If you randomly interview people on the streets in ANY city and ask them about NFL fight songs, the Saints will come out on top hands down, but on the other hand, I'll bet not many will know about the Bengals song that much if any! No matter who was first, it's who sounds better!
Good catch, plus one for you. Regardless though, it's still a ridiculous thing to argue about. Also, I don't think any real fan has more than one team, just an observation. If your a Saints fan first, then you're not really a Fin fan. Congrats to the Saints though. Drew Brees should have been ours, twice. *cries.
Who Dat, Who Dere? Thats from the fucking Waterboy, I hate fake cajuns. And it originated in.......... here read this 'Aint's fans. Then you can Bleaux Me.
Clearly nbalover1022 is a Ravens fan. Oh yeah, the Bengals BEAT them too. And they have been to 2 SBs back in the 80s. the Ravens won 1. good for you. But you Ravens fans know if it wasn't for Art Modell your city would have NO football franchise. Joke franchise? The Ravens are nothing but the OLD Cleveland Browns
actually that is bullshit it was started in the 30s in jazz songs so yeah ya kinda stole it....79? you were called the aints hahaha you people have absolutely no idea how badly you screwed up with this bounty program do you?
Hahaha the Bengals are pathetic, the one time they made the playoffs in the last 15 years my Steelers ate them alive. Who Dey?, WE DEY, STEELERS always beat them Bengals!
This is the worst version I have ever heard! WHO DAT is a Saints chant! Talk about highway robbery!!! There is nothing about WHO DAT that resembles Cinncinnati?!?!?!? WHO DAT screams the South, Louisiana, French/Creole pronunciation of English words!!! Gimme a break!!!! Geaux Saints!!!
Had to come back after finally kicking the playoff curse!

@nola305 Repeating ain't as easy as it sounds. Trust me, my team (your division rivals), the BUCS, didn't make the playoffs after winning the big one.
