I was hoping for at least some seating options, but I guess the idea is that it’s a space away from the seats to stand and get your blood circulating on these ultra long-hauls. That said, I still think a small bench like Emirates’ A380 bar would have been nice to see. It will make the whole experience worth charging the premiums these passengers will be charged.

@@rjmacf0015 I think you can make an estimation yourself. In comparison to (let's round it a bit) 2 * 11 hour flight there are some differences. The "first 11 hour" segment has nearly the same costs. For the "second 11 hour" segment you are not able to refuel so you have to carry the fuel all the way with you. So the weight of 11 hours * 900 kilometers per hour * estimated 4 litre per seat and 100 kilometers -> it's about 396 litres of kerosine which you fly through the air instead of tanking at an airport. Additionally you have additional crew and can't sell nearly any cargo on that flight.
Naturally the calculation is a bit different for the more square feet consuming Business and First Class seats but you can calculate with a hefty surcharge.
Naturally if I would fly on that route and as an airline enthusiast I would buy it. But 3 days a week for years.
I am not sure if it is the technical fascination which let's Qantas start this project or if any person doing the calculations have overseen it.

I have a personal interest as I have flown from the UK to Australia return 38 times over about 15 years in every class and know the routine rather well. I have done this mostly (but not always) with one airline which was not Qantas. The reason was that the Qantas passenger offering frankly was just not the best so this is a huge upgrade in aircraft choice and seating. As far as the route is concerned you'll know this is Sydney/Per/LHR for now at least. This is better than a non European touch down for 2 hours. Given the costs for this travel will always be very high it will be of great interest to see where this eventually fits given all carriers to and from Australia adding considerably to their pricing in the post COVID period. Only thing that buggers me with the Economy product is that there is no individual cup holder apart from the one on the table, would definitely like to have an individual cup holder like Singapore Airlines have on their A350's, just gives people more room when they're getting up to move around without you having to bother about your drink being knocked off the tray table. Other than budding av-geeks, no one is going to want to spend 20+ hours in economy. I've done Singapore's nonstop NYC to SIN a few times in premium economy and it's a slog. Great service and a fairly comfy seat; but after about 10-12 hours, the lack of lie-flat starts to really hurt physically and emotionally. I've been flying Qantas from NY to BNE for 45 years, first in economy, later in Premium Economy, currently in business. I don't see the point of a non stop since it's just departing JFK a couple of hours later. I assume it's to avoid getting in earlier than the current 6AM. Plus business is now > $13,000 RT, double from pre-pandemic 2020. So maybe Joyce focused on the wrong thing. Seems like fair fares, let's say $8000, is a better aim.

That premium economy bucket seat looking design, seems rather old school and bulky. Love the design language, at some areas remind me of Etihad colour palate. First and business definitely a step up comparing to the current design! Overall, it's quite an upgrade with safe choices. Still feels somewhat lack behind Singapore Airlines and Ana's seat. It's really not that simple though. The design of the seat, it's height, as well as the thickness of the cushion can greatly affect legroom regardless of the "seat pitch". It is very possible that a 33 inch seat pitch could feel more spacious than an older design which is 34 inches.

can Qantas launch some more international routes, like Brisbane to Chicago? Our International terminal is so empty right now and it is hard to get anywhere overseas from Brisbane without having to go via Sydney. There is clearly a lot of demand at Brisbane again, its not like our borders are shut anymore. Besides, as many other airlines are overlooking Brisbane, if you guys launch more international flights out of Brisbane, then passengers will have no other competitive choice but to fly Qantas, so you get almost all the demand in one shot
