Instead of electrical valves which would operate at a fixed frequency, you can try mechanical pin-activated valves that are activated when the pressure in the chamber is minimal. Thus, the valves would activate at the exact rate to resonate with the detonation cycles, like in an IC engine.

@@thed_ani The primary limitation of electrical valves, especially logic controlled, is response and repeat time. Integza is already pushing the practical limits for that in this video.
The main benefits are the ability to activate at distance, and to activate on a particular schedule or frequency, within the practical limits as established.
The only way to increase frequency in the case of this video would be to add more valve assemblies and fire them in sequence.

I just made a post on something similar however instead of the exact resonance frequency a 2/3 harmonic would likely be better as it would place the point of highest pressure at the exist of the exhaust.

You could create multiple combustion cylinders that converge into one exhaust pipe, something that looks similar to a Rolls Royce Derwent jet engine. I would combust them in rotation of a clock that way you will have higher pulse rates of combustion kinda like a radial piston engine.

@@harleyme3163what? No, pure ramjet engines aren’t used because they create no thrust while stationary and thus require an assisted take off or something that serves the same purpose. Unless you’re talking about shock-ramjet engines which just aren’t practical for anything that isn’t supersonic 100% of the time.
As someone who spent 15 years in the reserves around jet engines, Integza needs to add ear protection to his personal protective equipment. I wasn't careful enough when I was his age, and now have the hearing loss to prove it. Nowadays you can get electronic ear protection that actually lets you hear quieter sounds than normal and only blocks sounds loud enough to damage your ears.
I lack your 15y being around jet engines, but I was thinking the exact same thing throughout the video :D For me....it was concerts. Now I have this lovely ringing.

I built a shockwave jet engine. It was very loud. I needed to add ear protection to my personal protective equipment. The engine created a lot of thrust and was very powerful. It was an amazing experience.

Technically, this is a rocket engine, since it uses it's own oxidizer. Even cooler than a jet engine!
Its a rocket engine way slowed down, theirs a gradient between what we see as continuously and the amount of detonations, some rocket engines are measure in pulses, honestly I was hoping to see a v1 type of pulse engine with 2 valves, an exit to exhaust the pressure wave, and and entry one in the front sucking air due to the vacuum of the last pulse.

If you are keeping the older builds, a video I'd love to see would be how they all compare to eachother in a proper and recorded testing session
The Shchelkin spiral spring was interesting how it improved the effect. I once tried a tall, curvy or ribbed brass candle holder one time where the "exhaust end" was very wide with not hardly any confinement yet it made a good bang just being misted with methanol and lit from the open narrow end with a Bic lighter. If you try that same trumpet shape with an aluminum baseball bat with the the ends cut off the flame front becomes terribly slow and won't produce a bang. But this narrow wide narrow repeating channel shape accelerates the combustion quite suddenly. If you turn up the volume you can get an idea of the sound from this video entitled Candlestick Holder with Methanol, maybe of interest and only just as an aside or tidbit.

Video Suggestion: Adding some sort of a nozzle to this would be interesting. The pressure is not irrelevant in jet or rocket engines. it is manipulated through forced expansion to increase velocity which does create huge amounts of thrust. perhaps a little known fact: the pressure at the end of a rocket nozzle is very close to zero. Ideally it would be zero but there are issues with being close and creating negative pressure that cause the bell to resonate and explode.
Exactly, adding a bell would also give a greater surface area for the expanding gasses reflecting off the slower air to push the engine forward.
This resonating is also the reason why there are different sized engine bells. With a smaller bell the pressure isn't that low, so it is better in an environment with higher air pressure.
I'd love to see a CNC'd rocket nozzle attached to this thing!
Maybe impossible but perhaps a cnc cone with reflection channels in the outer rim to not only take advantage of the expanding pressure zone in a more efficient way but if in the right area could smooth out some of the losses

You could double your gas valve speed by putting two supply valves into the combustion chamber and set up your Arduino code to do an alternating trigger between the two valves.
Was thinking same thing ... although for 450 Hz he may need up to 45 valves per line (since he could do 10 Hz per valve ) at least I guess

For the valves I would go for LPG injectors used in car engine LPG conversions. They should be able to open with required frequency still being relatively cheap.

You have gained a ton of knowledge, tools, and expertise over the course of these videos. A theme for a future video that I would love, would be to see you tackle some of your earlier failures with with your new knowledge, to see if you can get things working!
I just think that due to the engines rapidly heating up, it might be a good idea on the metal versions to add a heat shroud, such as on MG’s. This would help with cooling and allow you to conduct longer tests while reducing the possibility of overheating and issues associated with that. Just seems like it would be a nice quality of life fix.

water cooling the thing would also give you a controllable meter. you could change the water flow rate and get different rates of cooling to keep the engine at the optimal temps for detonation. much like a gasoline engine.

So much yes! Pulse Detonation Engines are awesome. Thank you for this, on a side note I saw two different designs of air intake for pulse detonation engines that worked very well-one is like a powered air compressor piston assembly that as the piston goes up and down it pushes air and fuel into the exhaust tube (basically the exhaust pipe) and it acts like a backfire tune on a car. The second design utilizes a Tesla valve to allow one way transfer of the air/fuel mixture into the detonation tube.
I wonder if the exhaust can be funneled through a nozzle to further increase the momentum. The mushroom plume does not look particularly efficient.
Gotta love pulse detonation engines. Boeing had a design about 20 years ago, used dozens of pulsetubes like you created operating with an offset timing. They attached it to a tech demo stealth drone, looked like some kind of bird, stinking sweet.

Search for "Colin Furze" and "Robert Maddox". They build pulsejet-engines themselves and strapped them to all sorts of vehicles. Colin made a jet-bicycle. Enjoy.
This video also reminded me of the absolutely insane *Project Orion* . Which was a research project by NASA where they were trying to determine the feasibility of a spacecraft powered by nuclear bombs (they even built a scaled down version...that ran on conventional explosives of course. It effectively fired grenades behind it, these 'grenades' made a shockwave that then pushed on a thrust plate, which pushed the craft forward. A somewhat similar thing is happening to your pulsejet except instead of hitting a thrust plate, the dense stationary air is acting like a thrust plate.)

@@fragmissle5932 Pretty much, but with the intention of scaling it up as far as a city-sized spacecraft basically 'putting a cup over' thermonuclear explosives and using enormous shock absorbers to turn the recoil of the cup getting slammed into the ship into a (somewhat) smoother propulsive force. Not the most efficient or safe type of engine, but VERY, VERY powerful, and _theoretically_ buildable with a fairly low level of technology (IIRC they developed a combination of steel and oil coating for the thrust plate/cup that should handle being repeatedly nuked at a certain distance surprisingly well, apparently).

@@05Matz Yeah, IIRC the biggest concern was that considering how often it detonated, that would mean mass producing nuclear bombs in the millions.... Yeah... that's something to be concerned about. Don't get me wrong, they figured out how to do it and it's relatively easy. That's the concerning part.
I'd love to see this engine with a nozzle/exhaust on the end. It would be interesting to see the difference between the non nozzled, a wide nozzle and a small nozzle.

Hey integza, an engine like this (pressure optimised) are best used as prop/shaft engines. It's much more efficient to extract the energy using a turbine rather than trying to push against the atmosphere
Video suggestion: Making a radial engine, would be cool to have an engine with many sparks timed. I don't believe you have done that. I think they look so cool. Maybe even attach a propeller to make a moving machine

I thought of using two cylinders to counteract one an other that would double pulses. further instead of opening and closing a solenoid you could make siphoning fuel source similar to a carberator but with an turbo compressor pushing air in and a reid valve to direct flow. also you could do different nozzle such as on traditional jet engines to further stabilize air flow. cant wait to see the next video! thanks, Ollie

Repeated Denonations without ear protection is probably not good on the ear drums.

Slight understatement lol, the sound from a PDE can be up to 171dB and the quietest they can be is still 100dB+ so even the quietest PDE can cause hearing damage after a few mins without hearing protection and the loudest ones at 171dB would very likely cause serious damage after just several seconds without protection

I'd love to see you do one of those fancy multicycle piston engines. The ones where there's two cylinders that are normal four stroke, and then a third larger cylinder which recovers more energy from the waste gases. I don't remember what it's called.

Try different size exhaust cones keep the angle of the cones between 11 and 14 degrees. You observed and stated the problem when you noticed the mushroom shape of the exhaust stream. Just spread the force out over a larger area so there is more effective use of force. Tomatoes are great in a sandwich with bacon lettuce and mayo.
double or triple the engines to get continuous thrust, you need to time them so they will work in sequence, exhausting from single nozzle. similar to car engine. good luck.

Given everything else engine wise that you’ve created, I’m surprised I haven’t seen a video with a small scale version of the Orion concept rocket. You know, the one that was going to use nuclear warheads and a pusher plate to get into space? I guess consider this an idea for a future video if you haven’t already done something like this?

Hey integza, I've always wondered whether you could make a tip jet setup such as in a few helicopters with small versions of your pulse or other jet designs. You could either use two small jets, or one jet which feeds output to multiple angled tip outlets.

you could use multiple out of synchronisation engines so that there is always thrust coming out of the shock wave engine continuously .
You could pre-mix the fuel in a seperate box. Then make one connection to your actual chamber and break them with a ball valve. If you want to make it really fun, you could take out the blockade, that stops a normal opperator from overturning it and connect it to an electric motor. The faster the motor spins the more often your valve is open and the more pulses you can make

Instead of relays, you could potentially use a rotor + stator setup to time everything.
Was thinking the same. Like a hydraulic motor valve or a cam shaft. A stepper motor or BLDC are very easy to time. But any electric motor will work with Pwm
The limit is the valve itself. Inertia, momentum, and magnetic field strength, among other variables, finding their detent.

You could also use a standard turbo for a rocket using compressed air and a fuel injection system and ignition with either a printed or milled nozzle. Try running the exhaust from the turbo back into the turbo with a fuel sprayer and ignition system? Once the compressed air gets it going redirect some of the exhaust back to the intake turbine a mixture of the exhaust and combustion should keep it going.
That's really impressive! You should try mounting one of you best motors on a car or a plane, or could be nice!
VIDEO SUGGESTION: It would be very entertaining and informal to make a combination of two pulse-jet engines in one machine that alternate their detonations so to provide a constant level of thrust.
I'd be curious to see you create a twin of this engine and combine/program the two with a delay in pulses to oppose each other's explosion all contained inside one unit. 2 combustion chambers maybe?
When engine 1 fires, engine 2 would be refueling and resting. Once engine 1 completes its pulse/detonation, engine 2 would fire and engine 1 would rest and refuel. 🚀
Get the timing right and you might just create your own variant of an "alternating" pulse-jet engine that overcomes one of the problems of pulsed thrust engines and their inability to maintain a constant force of thrust.

Idea for a future video: Since you use compressed air so often in your videos it’d be cool to make a 3D printed air compressor. You could use it to test out some other things you’ve built that require compressed air. It could be electric powered or for a bit more of an Integza style video you could use a gas turbine.

while it would be a fun idea, trying to build your own pressure vessels with a 3d printer is absurdly dangerous and the possibility of a catastrophic failure is very very high.

@@stevecummins324 it wouldnt be the container itself, it would be at the interface of the vessel and the connection that would be the weak point. Im reading now that you can have carbon fiber vessels but i would almost 100% assume that the connections are either brass/stainless/carbon steel in some form. Which would severly limit the viability of 3d printing. I dont see an issue with making an air pump, but a compressor is a different animal.

Might reduce the danger factor and anyway this guy builds jet engines in his garage sometimes without eye protection and awfully close to high-rpm blades so a lil bit of danger if handled well wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.

I was wondering is there any way of making a Sound engine or sound turbine? This is really fascinated me especially since a lot of scientists have been recovering data on crop circles that have a frequency that is left behind.
Hey integza, maybe for your next project try integrating the fuel/oxidizer injector of a pulse jet with a much shorter pipe, then add in a ramjet-style compressor. might help make th system more compact.
I would love to see you try to miniaturize this more and see if you can actually make something fly using this! Even if you can't get it to fly it'd be really freaking cool to see this mobile the rail is cool and a small train powered by jet engine would be awesome!

Hello! I have watched all you successes and failures that have created so many very interesting videos. I have an idea for you to make a better pulse jet engine. During WWII my uncle was in charge of retro-engineering captured V-1 "Buzz-Bombs" in order to discover any of their vulnerabilities. When taken apart he was amazed at how simple and powerful these pulse jet engines were. The first German "buzz bombs" only utilized thin and flexible razor blades in a flap valve grid, followed by a mixing chamber, spark plug, and venturi tail pipe. The readily-available and robust razor blades easily could flex open to allow the fuel/air mixture to enter the combustion camber, and then the razor blades "flapped" shut during the explosion to propel the rocket forward. These razor blades could flex open and closed many 100s of thousands of times without failure! The filling and flapping occurred about 50 times per second and thus "buzzed". This simple design allowed the rocket to carry huge weights into the sky! This design does not require all the engineering complexity and lacks the problems seen with a rotating pulse engine. My uncle told me that his first 'copy' of the V-1 flew 50 miles until it ran out of fuel! Therefore, look up “buzz-bomb” designs and make one so that you can have great success with one of your videos!

Integza, make a Rocket out of Carbon Fiber, but you have to laminate Carbon Fiber and Fireplace Sealant on 3D printed molds like with the Pulse Jet.
The engines, fuel tank, etc have to be made out of the same material.
If you don’t want the entire rocket to look like a dullish grey color, you can paint it to make it look like, I don’t know, a NASA rocket.
As a starter, I suggest you to make solid rocket boosters like the ones on the NASA space shuttle and make the entire rocket propelled by solid rocket engines. Like the Apollo rocket.
You can then graduate to more advanced rockets which use Liquid Rocket engines.
For the more advanced rockets, you can 3D print them and use your 3D printed rocket engines in place of Carbon Fiber + Fireplace Cement Sealant Rocket Engines.

Integza, please can you make a version two of your turbojet engine, I’m making one myself but i need to see how to assemble the parts. Btw love ur videos and like the way you experiment a range of engines but I’d love it if you could revise the turbojet project. Try making an axial turbojet this time.
It might not yet be a very efficient engine, but does make a great machine gun sound-effect for movies. Might be interesting to do a collab with one of them indie movie types
