    Really great lesson. Thank you! B flat has always been a challenge for me. I've started trying to play some basic solos in G from that position, but just moving it up to B flat did sound funky like you said. Never occurred to me to play from the same position from the B flat on the A string!

    Took me a bit to follow what shape is being discussed, but I think I understand: we’re basing the position on the root and fifth of the chord, with the root on one string and the fifth on the string below, but two frets up.
    You build your muscle memory around this and then you learn what else happens in this position. The fifth above the root note is just one string down on the same fret, for example.
    And you can easily transfer this position to whatever key you need to play in. If you’re in C you just find the root on the A string and go from there.

      You got it Mark. This closed position makes it possible to play in all keys and tranpose solos to accommodate vocalist who need to sing a song in a different key.

      Yep. There are a lot of bluegrass songs that suit his voice in that key. I love the sound of a banjo with the capo on the 3rd or 4th fret.

      Hey Dean. I don't own a camera pal! These vidoes are recorded and edited on my Galaxy S10e. I make the thumbnails and manage CZcams studio from the phone as well. Very low budget......

    I’m going to go pick up my mandolin in a second. Did you ever come back to this with more detail on the note by note scale choices for this position?EDIT I’m getting good enough to figure some stuff out. Just put my fingers in place on the position you showed and worked out the scale notes for I Saw The Light.Whoopee.

    Great lesson, Wayne. But either your hands are a lot bigger than mine, or your mandolin is a lot smaller than mine. My fingers just can't span that many frets, so I often have to just use the top 3 strings.

      Be sure your fingers are approaching the fretboard at a healthy angle, this can make a world of difference. Good luck.....

      Good eye Michael! That cabinet came outta my sisters laundry room and I built a frame for it and used it as a floor unit. Guess I should move the handles to the top of the doors at some point.

      That opening song is just a piece of me improvising over a backing track I found here on CZcams. It doesn't have a title and has never been officially recorded in a studio. It's basically me goofin off here at home during Covid. Thx for the comment!

    Nice lesson however, you show the root in the fifth as the starting point, but it would’ve been helpful if you would’ve pointed out the other notes that you are playing around with as well. You got us all started, but did not outline the next steps. Maybe the next video!

    You must have to know essentially everything talked about here already to make use of this lesson. I see a bunch of folk did but all I got was look at my fingers and listen to me solo. The scale positions changed based on the the key and without knowing all the licks and scale position changes for the sharps and flats I am not sure what I am supposed to get other than the power chord shape. I am sure its just me, any help appreciated.

      I've been playing guitar most my life and recently(about 2 weeks ago) got a mandolin just because I want to expand musically. I've learned most major chords already and improvise/jazz around from chord to chord... which can figured out because of my guitar experience. I can say that Wayne's videos (this is the 2nd one I've watched via CZcams suggestions) help nearly instantly if you are an already seasoned guitar player. Thank you Wayne.

      Yep, it was. I've made several different intros and they continue to get shorter. I started this channel during the Covid-19 lock down and it seemed like a reasonable length at the time. Hard to believe we experienced a season when we weren't all in a hurry.....
