The castle is still an important part of the identity of those of us living in Portchester. We're squeezed in between Portsmouth to the east, the larger town of Fareham to the west, bound by the chalk cliffs and downs to the north and the sea to the south, in the wider South Hampshire Connurbation, tightly packed in our little enclave, but there still remains a distinct feeling of place and identity that doesn't seem to exist elsewhere nearby. It is distinct but it isn't seperate, much like the castle's role in our island's history.

Brilliant explanation of everything - Dan Snow is the quintessential historian. I love how he takes the time to point out the graffiti. English Heritage is such an important institution and makes the perfect CZcams channel.

Brilliant video again! Absolutely loving this EH & Dan Snow series, perfect match up! Always lived on the doorstep of Porchester and have enjoyed chasing my kids around the cemetery much the same as my parents did for me when i was a child. The view from the top of the tower is indeed outstanding.

Nice to see Portchester Castle featured. My late mother was Christened in St Mary’s Church within the castle grounds and a Great Aunt and Uncle were married there. I have fond memories of visiting another Great Aunt and Uncle who lived in Portchester in the 60’s & 70’s. It’s been a few years since I last visited the castle but I was very pleased to see how the coastal path had been developed that runs along the edge of Fareham Creek and gives a nice view over to Portsmouth Dock. When I was a child that area was a horrible mess with all sorts of flotsam and jetsam littering the waters edge that had washed over from the Docks, a lovely walk along there now.

Hi Christopher. Yes, you are lucky to live in Portchester. I loved visiting my late Great Aunt there are touring round the area. Not far down to Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard. Love the Neon Valley. Not been down there for a few years now, must get back. My Aunt lived in the house on the corner of Conway Lane / White Hart Lane and Sandport Grove. My mother grew up on Orchard Grove.
