    Thank you. Good tip about adding additional clay for a larger pot. I do cone up and center down but, as I am new to claywork, I will stick with that until I am more proficient. I want to watch you succeed with your kiln building plans. Thanks for the videos.

      Thank you. It will succeed. Center the clay however it works for you.

    I have only recently found your channel but must say I have been enjoying it greatly. While I am a studio potter at our local community college I make my income by teaching chemistry at the same college. I wanted to say that you are an excellent instructor and I really appreciate the time you take to make these videos. I am looking forward to trying out your bowl throwing method soon. Thank you.

      Thank you very much. That means a lot. I think often about what I do and why I do it when it comes to technique so I guess that comes out when I make videos.

    I love to watch you throw, and I learn so much just by observing! It would be great if you would video an entire half-day's worth of throwing...and then post it on CZcams. I'd really enjoy just watching for several hours, as though I was fortunate enough to be a visitor in your studio for half a day. I know CZcams encourages short videos, but a really long one would be a nice change of pace. I hope you'll give this suggestion some careful consideration. Thanks!

      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 5 lety +2

      I’ll definitely consider that. I don’t know what the time limit is on CZcams, but the other hinderance would be the file size that it would take to record for that long. Maybe I would do a CZcams live event

    I usually come down wrong and create a “skirt” which inevitably puts it off center and with a bubble too. I’m done coning this week and will try this. I’m not working yet with more than 1.5 lbs. thanks!

    Thank you for the tips, I learn something every time I watch. Is there an advantage to a standing wheel as opposed to sitting? Or is it just preference? I hope your high school teacher is around to see your success he would be proud.

    Very informative video for so many people. How important is wedging clay? Machine wedge or hand wedge which one is your preference and why?

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 5 lety +3

      Thanks! I definitely prefer using a pug mill. Wedging is quite a work out and very bad on your wrists in the long run in my opinion.

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 5 lety +2

      Plenty of clays from commercial manufacturers are fine right out of the bag but I still pug mine.

    Looks like your wheel is like mine. I think a Pacifica. How did you make it to where you can use it as a stand up wheel ?

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 5 lety +2

      That is a GT400. Right now its is on blocks and a couple bricks. They sell leg systems for them but currently everyone is out of stock, even Axner (owned by Laguna - who makes the wheels)! That is a new wheel to me but I have used the same style wheel for years elsewhere.

    Okay, so I no longer wedge my clay because it comes off of a block. They came from a box that came out of a pug mill and it's not necessary. In my opinion, I have not had anything cracking months and months and months. . The only time that I wedge is if I'm reconstituting clay, I don't have a pug mill obviously.
    But I don't understand unless you're using. Porcelain all the time how you can't cone? The stoneware that I'm used to is too damn hard to stiff not to work up and down a couple of times. There's no way I could pull anything. There was not sup and dog and made kind of a homogeneous. Consistency by Coning up and down. . You mix your own clays. So I'm thinking maybe you mix them to the perfect smooth texture that you like. From the start. That makes me want a pug mill so bad, LOL.

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 4 lety

      Even though the clay in the bag was plugged, as it sits it gets stiffer on the outside than inside so I love to use fresh pugged clay when I throw.

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  Před 5 lety +5

      Probably needs new belts. Not 100% sure. I bought it used and it was that way. But it works fine. I hope that’s not all you got out of the video. Haha
