Forever young, met him in his college years at LSU. Watched him play a few games, incredible man and basketball player. Watching him on TV does doesn’t come close to seeing him and his teammates out on the hardwood floor. Definitely Gods gift to us for only a short time. Best ball handler ever and purebred shooter.
When Pete was young and not dealing with injuries, he was incredible. Too bad 1970's NBA was rarely televised so most of his highlights are the same ones over and over, but imagine, he did those tricks NIGHTLY.
Former LSU coach Dale Brown once went through all Pete's college games and found that had there been a three point line back then...instead of his 3 year avg. of JUST 44 points a game...still the record...he would have averaged...57!
seeing red on the bench made me think, somebody should ask him what it was like to coach pistol in the 84 old timers game, but he's not around any more. one of the great minds and story tellers of basketball. Glad there's still a lot of footage like this and interviews out there on the interwebs though.
Pistol Pete was the best there ever was and ever will be. He averaged 44.2 points per game in college and was probably the best shooter and defiantly the best ball handler.
If only they had the know-how and technology of today. He never recovered from his knee injury in 78'. Hobbled around for a couple more partial seasons, that was it.
Yeah, he was not the same. And it happened when he was peaking. Maybe a little different, but Mark Price had a similar injury. He gutted out a couple more decent years, but the "burst" was gone.
Dolph Schayes holy mackerel. On one hand I wish they still played these games.. on the other hand too many of those old timers were getting injured so I see why they stopped them.
They mentioned Earl Monroe. He was called at one time Earl the Pearl Monroe & was a super showman as well in his prime. Earl with Baltimore Bullets was smooth, did a lot of head feints, spin moves & pumping the ball, sometimes underhanded.
Two best ball-handlers of all-time: The Pearl & the Pistol. Jerry West once said: "Maravich & Monroe are the only two guys I'd pay to see play." That's fast company!
@bullzman23 I'm looking for it as well. Out of that entire group, I think Barkley would be the most interesting to watch to see if he still can play like a 6'10 guy in a 6'5 frame.
What I saw of the passing skills Of Oscar Roberson late in his career was not as flashly as Pistol Pete or film clips of Bob Cousey but was effective & the Big O at one time had the all time assist record. I don't know offhand if O played longer.
Forget that, they played together for a year. Imagine if Pete could've gotten healthy and stuck around an additional two or three years. Maybe Bird would have had four instead of three championships.
@@dwannbrown2565 sure, maybe it would have been cool, but come on, Pete's retirement after one year on the Celtics definitely is one of the biggest "what ifs" in my mind. Even if he in time only ended up as a sixth man like Bill Walton, the Celtics might have ended up that much more scary.
@@johnmannino3100 MAYBE OR NOT!! I WAS TALKING ABOUT EXCITEMENT 4 THE LEAGUE!! I AM NOT A CELTICS FAN!! NEVER WAS!! BUT 4 WATCHING THE THRILL OF NBA ACTION, BIRD IN HIS PRIME AGAINST 🔫 PISTOL PETE IN HIS PRIME WOULD'VE BEEN A CLASSIC LEGENDARY BATTLE!!
@wonderbread1 yeah, i don't think MJ would play, but guys like Magic, Pip, and Robinson have done that shooting stars challenge, so maybe they'd be game.
@bullzman23 That would be awesome! The problem is those guys wouldn't do it. The big paychecks have killed the spirit of the NBA. I seriously doubt Jordan would play. Magic might. Larry Bird maybe, but he is really out of shape. Barkley would if they offered him free Krispie Kreams for life. lol I don't know, it would be great, but it will never happen.
I don't want to see the "old timers" play,,, see them stumbling around with pot bellies and skinny, gimpy legs, I want to remember them when they were studs and truly great players

Pistol Pete; the best basket ball handler ever.
💯
Awful close, at least.
Two of the greatest of all time who didn't play with "Great Teams", Archie Manning and Pistol Pete Maravich.
One Player that all pros respect

He had Love of the game. Then he transitioned to Love Of Our Lord.

You the man, you’re a legend for uploading all of thees. Old school games. Improving my game one video at a time!!!
Dolph Schayes holy mackerel. On one hand I wish they still played these games.. on the other hand too many of those old timers were getting injured so I see why they stopped them.
Right, David Thompson and Norm Nixon tore up their knees in this game (later, of course).
the big o really is the BIG o here, looks like pete was the only one who didnt let himself go
He is probably throwing no-looks to God when they play against Wilt Chamberlain. RIP Pistol.
Still a point a minute man!
If SportsCenter had its Top Ten Plays back then that Havlicek/Maravich play would stand out above the rest.
It's weird to see Pistol Pete shooting on those break away rims that came in the 80's which they didn't have yet in the 70's .
"Hal Greer grabbed my right knee" LOL...RIP Pistol!
outstanding job Thanks
ANOTHER CLASSIC
They mentioned Earl Monroe. He was called at one time Earl the Pearl Monroe & was a super showman as well in his prime. Earl with Baltimore Bullets was smooth, did a lot of head feints, spin moves & pumping the ball, sometimes underhanded.
Earl was fricken awesome ... with the Bullets and the Knicks ... great shooter

Greatest backcourts in NBA history: 1) West/Goodrich, 2) Frazier/Monroe, 3) Curry/Thompson, 4) Isaiah/Dumars, Magic/ and anyone else!
"Old Timers!?" Pistol was like 36 when he played in this game!
...And still retired four years.
The irony is a team that started play after his death retired his #7.
They should bring back the old timers game.
great vid - still had a totally serviceable jump shot.
you said it man that would be insane.
he could have still been playing in the NBA in 84. sad he had to retire
It was good that he retired a little bit because his heart problem could have killed him
Fun to watch
id love to see pistol at his prime vs koby..
Number 17 sacrificed his life just to make that pass to Pistol Pete
@bullzman23 I'm looking for it as well. Out of that entire group, I think Barkley would be the most interesting to watch to see if he still can play like a 6'10 guy in a 6'5 frame.
If you could upload this game, that'd be great. I wish they still did this. I'd love to see MJ, Pipp, Magic, Barkley, Isiah, etc play again.
@bullzman23 They had to stop it because people were getting hurt, these guys forgot that they were old.
1990? no, probably 1986...I would have loved to see him play with Jordan (in his early years)
At least they have something like it in the All-Star game today. Im talkin bout the Shootin Stars Competition.
Pete !
John Havlicek.
ya i want to see michael and magic and bird and others it would be unreal
Yeah I would love to see David Robinson, Hakeem, Dumars, Wilkins, Drexler, too.
@Convisis he wasn't really an "old-timer" though. He was 36 when he played this game and was only 4 years out of the leauge.
Because the last old timers game, 2 of them blew their knees out so...
like an old timey Lamelo Ball
