Born from an American mother and an Iranian father (who was from Ardebil city, Province of Eastern Azerbaijan in Iran, and on a work assignment in the country of Azerbaijan).
He did his schools and university in Tehran (Iran), and then moved to the US for higher education where he became a citizen and stayed for the rest of his life.
So, technically he was an Iranian-American with Azeri ethnicity from his father's side.
The fact that he was born in the country of Azerbaijan, makes him a citizen of Azerbaijan (by birth) too.
So, where was he from exactly? Iran, the country of Azerbaijan, or the US?

Born on February 4, 1921 in Baku, Azerbaijan (which was part of the nascent Soviet Socialist republic), Zadeh moved to Iran, his father's homeland (South Azerbaijan in Iran), with his family when he was 10 years old. He later graduated from the University of Tehran before continuing his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his graduate studies.
In Iran live 35 mln Azerbaijanis (They are not AZERI, they are Azerbaijani Turks). Azerbaijani, any member of a Turkic people living chiefly in the Republic of Azerbaijan (10 mln) and in the region of Azerbaijan (35 mln) in northwestern Iran. Azeri does not exist, that is the Iranian lie and ideology to say that Azerbaijanis are not a Turkic people. Because in Iran there are 35 million Azerbaijanis.
If Lotfi Zadeh was an Iranian, why did he want to be buried in Baku, Azerbaijan?

Furthermore, he has identified himself as an Azerbaijani not Iranian or Persian.
