How to make Flat Iron Steak! (That Melts in your Mouth)
* I mentioned I took the steak out 1 to 2 hours ahead of time.*
Update: Take the Flat Iron Steak out of the refrigerator for only about 30 minutes ahead of time to allow it to come to room temp.
If you buy a full length flat iron steak cut it in half.
Rub it down with olive oil and season it with a mixture of
1 tsp. pepper / 1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. garlic powder / 1/2 tsp. sea salt
Put a thin layer of olive oil in a non-stick frying pan and bring it
to high heat and cook the steak for 1 minute on each side.
Reduce heat to medium heat and turn the steaks every minute
a total of 10 to 12 times to reach medium rare. Longer for medium.
Remove the steaks and put them in a shallow dish and cover loosely with aluminum foil and let rest for 10 to 15 minuets.
Slice 1/4 inch thick. (VERY IMPORTANT) make sure you cut the
steaks across the grain (NO LENGTH WISE)
Serve with salad and baked potato! Enjoy!

So cool that one great watches another great 👍🏻
I watched this vid for 90 seconds and instantly loved this dude
I just found him today, and am saddened that unfortunately, I found his videos too late. He looked like a great cook, and an even better guy. My condolences, and may he rest in the afterlife. I know he would want all of his friends to continue cooking and enjoying all the delicacies life has to offer. 🖤
Thank you! Glad you found us. When Steve passed away he had made 307 of these recipes on here now it has over 440. Hope you get to make some of these dishes. 🧑🏻🍳
OH No I so sorry to him family RIP
What happened???’
I still miss him 😢
I'm so sorry to hear of his passing! My husband's name is Steve, as well, and he loves to show me his love for me via the kitchen as well. When we became empty nesters and his health became to fail, he had to get a feeding tube. I saw no reason to enjoy food whatsoever anymore. He hated to see what was happening to me and started fighting to be able to eat a little again. Tonight he made our ham dinner. What a sweetheart. To give back to him, I'm going to try making this! Thank you so very much, Sheila, for sharing your husband with us!
Thanks for sharing your memories and hope you both have a great meal tonight!
❤️
Sheila you're one lucky woman to have had a man who loved you and loved to cook. So sorry to hear of you're loss. Please hang in there, and keep Steve's recipes coming, and keep his channel going, and we'll keep watching, even the reruns. And just know he was a pleasure to watch and a great teacher.
Thank you so much for such kind words!
Steve Hall passed away December 29, 2018 according to the internet. He was 64 years old and died of natural causes. Rest In Peace Steve. Thank you for the many hours of entertainment and the wonderful recipes.
A true master chef.Knows good cuts of steak vs great cuts of steak.Rest easy champ. You won’t be forgotten
Thanks for being a subscriber. Thanks for the compliment for Steve.😃👍
OMG! I’ve never enjoyed watching someone cook steak so much & the compliments to his wife. I was very sad too see after watching the video that he has passed away may he Rest In Peace 🕊 ❤️.. definitely going to go buy a flat iron steak for sure now! And I’m still going to subscribe and watch all the videos I missed. To Mrs.Sheila I hope that your doing well & you are in my thoughts and prayers your husband seemed like a amazing man who loved you very dearly.
Thank you for such a sweet comment! ❤️
Every time I make this meal I will say a special prayer for Steve and Ms. Sheila. See you soon in the sky!
Awe... Thank you. So sweet of you! :)
I love cooking this meat. The first time I saw this video my mouth was watering!! Sadly, in Scotland our entire steak is only about half the size of one of those pieces!! The American's look to have bigger cows than we have!!
I was late to the party with Shotgun's videos but go back and watch different old ones. I love just listening to the big man talk away as he cooks. He is sadly missed.
So sad to hear of Mr. Halls passing.. He lived a very interesting life full of many forms of entertainment and education.. I am glad you have kept his channel going and hope you are well. Thank you Mz Sheila...
Your welcome!
Just tried Flat Iron Steak for the first time and used Steve’s method and I have to say, it was WONDERFUL! I am going to try cooking my ribeyes, using this method. After reading through comments, I am sad to hear that Steve “Shot Gun Red” has passed away. He had a very kind and endearing look about him; Rest In Peace.
Thanks for such a great comment!
Steve left his legacy.... Flat iron steak trebled in price after he and Sheila posted this due to the fact that nobody knew how delicious flat iron is until Steve showed us how it's done! Thanks Steve for so many great recipes. Missed and never forgotten!
Your welcome!
@@CookingwithShotgunRed I've Neva had a sampling of a righteous Flat Iron Steak YET. Bartered Benjamin Notes for my First Flat Iron Steak. Safe travels to ShotgunRed household from AZ.
I'm so sorry that Steve passed. He seemed like such a kind man. Obviously, he was great cook too! If I can find a flat iron steak tomorrow at the grocery store I'm gonna try this out. It looks beyond tasty. I like mine cooked somewhere between the two of ya'll. I guess a little closer to Steve's. "Where a good vet might could bring it back" lol! He sure is missed! 😪 Thank you pretty Ms. Sheila for keeping this channel going! 😘
Thank you Carrie
Steve passed away?! Oh my god! This video showed me how to cook a flat iron steak and how to eat a steak properly since I used to eat it well done all the time, Thank you for the cooking knowledge, It is something I will use the rest of my life RIP Mr. Hall
Steve would have loved to know he changed your life in a good way even if it was in a small way. :)
I’ve been watching many of his videos but never read the comments. Had no idea that he had passed on. So sorry for my late condolences
Randomly found this.....Can not wait to try!!!! So excited. Love the way he did his thing
Just saw this video yesterday, 3/5/2023 - ABSOLUTELY 👍the best steak!! As good as the tenderloin I have occasionally but low cost meat!!! I was afraid of flat iron steak but no more! Cheap and delicious cooked this way! So sorry to hear he is gone. God bless his family. 💝🙏
Hello Rita! Glad you love this recipe for this Flat Iron Steak. We appreciate you watching this channel! 👍😁
shotgunred.com
I can't believe he passed on! I really wanted to let him know how he turned me onto cooking a flat iron steak his way; IT WORKS! I've had it twice now and love how I don't even need steak sauce. God bless you for continuing on and God Bless Steve's soul.
Amen
Never ever cooked a flat iron steak this way. Mine always came out much less tender. First time I get the chance I'll try it Steve's way and hope mine comes close to his accomplishment.
Thanks David! :)
Amazing how love of food has brought us together. Steve’s enthusiasm towards all of us was infectious. His life made a difference, and will be remembered, Sheila he was always thinking of you and so de we.
Steve will be missed big time! He was such a wonderful cook and entertainer!!
This is so perfect, thank you for keeping his videos alive.
I miss this ol' boy. His recipes may not always be "authentic" but they sure are good! As for the flat iron steak, a darn good cut for the "common man" (and woman). The flat iron in the pan is the best way to prepare this steak. Thanks for the video!
This is the first time I’m making Flat Iron steak. This recipe looks absolutely delicious.
I will give a toast to Steve, may he rest in peace.
❤️🍻🥂
Thank you!
First of all, my condolences! I just discovered your channel today and reading the comments, heard of the sad news. I just cooked the steak and I have to say, it is absolutely delicious! Thank you Steve for your vibrant energy, your enthusiasm and your expertise. This is how I will always cook flat iron steak from now on.
Thanks for such a sweet comment!
Just used this recipe, and it came out fire! One of the best steaks I've ever had.
Fantastic! 👍😃
That looks delicious! Im gonna try it on cast iron.
Today I've watched 11 of you're CZcams tutorials and this one got my curiosity. I've seen iron steak many times at the butcher's and have never bought it. But boy are things changing tomorrow. I can't thank you enough for introducing me to a more affordable cut of meat. Awesome tutorial 👍🌷🤗
Thanks for watching Rita! Hope you find a'lot of video's you like to make!
I agree, I am going to get it also. I am going to make fajitas using this cut. I can not wait and I think family will love it.
I was never any good at cooking a steak, I always stuck to broiling. My flatty is resting right now and can’t wait to tear into it to see what I’ve learned. Thanks!
The good certainly do die young. RIP Steve, you'll be sadly missed.
Beautiful cooking, may your cooking and recipes stick around 💜💜
This looks absoluty fabulous!
So I just ran across your site. I used your method, with a couple of Angus sirloins. It was Brilliant! Thanks for doing what you do!
You’re welcome! Steve unfortunately passed away December 29th 2018
@@CookingwithShotgunRed yeah, I read that in the comments after I posted. Very sad News...it's awesome that he's still able to impact people's lives ❤️🙏 🥩
Sad to say I only now came across this channel. That steak looks amazing, flat iron is one of my favorites too and your seasoning is the same that I use minus a dash of red pepper flakes and a bit of lime. I know your cooking for the legends now my guy, in the big steak house in the sky! R.I.P Steve. You are missed.
Thanks and welcome! Steve sure loved to cook! He would have been excited to know how much you care! about this channel😋👌 shotgunred.com
I just cannot get over how tender you made that steak . It looks so incredibly delicious. I thought it'd be harder to cook that steak thank you for sharing that recipe I'm going to try it !
Your so welcome!
So grateful we still have your videos!! Miss you so much!!!
Thank you Linda
My kind of cooking! From the mushrooms to the country bobs, exactly how I've made it before. Great cooking, great video!
Good job on that steak I'm going to go to the store and buy one of those flat iron steaks and try your recipe thank you very much 👍🇺🇸
Hope you enjoy
That looks delicious! And he seems to really care about Sheila!
The one minute per side suggestion was a god send! I could never figure out why my steaks always came out wrong. Thank you so much for this, I'm making flat iron again tonight.
You are so welcome!😀
It's 8 turns over after 1 min. each x.
Instead of 8 minutes all at one side..
He flips it over every minute that must be the reason that it becomes tender
Thank you for this! Such a fantastic cut of meant, full off flavor and very tender
Glad you enjoyed it Richard!😀👍 shotgunred.com
I agree, one min sear per side is enough. And yes, they all say 2 to 3 min. per side.
Wonderful! Beautiful!!! Yes my mouth is watering!!!
Thank you 😋
So sorry for your loss, Sheila. The videos are so great - thank you. RIP, sweet Steve & the best to you, lovely Ms. Sheila.
Your so welcome!
I just found out Steve passed away, RIP.
Hi Shemp! Guys called me Curly back in the day. I even have a novelty Cal Drivers ID. Sad about Steve...he really is theman, myth and legend. The genuine article!

What a pleasure. He is a wealth of knowledge...👍🏻👍🏻up..
Will be doing this next week
I’ll be trying this for the first time; I learned that I can cook turnips, peeled, and they taste like potatoes- am doing the Dr. Berg’s Keto method now. THanks so much, subscribed! Sorry for your loss, all our losses- Blessings!

That’s Steve for you!😂
Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I just found him and he's already gone! I hope you keep up the chicken channel. I made his chicken fried steak and it was the best I've ever had. It's one of my favorites and I've had plenty through the years. I've got a lot of recipes to catch up on!
Yes you do and you have about 399 more to go! :)
Great video, thanks Steve and Sheila!
Glad you enjoyed it! Steve passed away Dec 29th 2018
Very creative and will try. Thx.
Most welcome 😊👍
I bought my first flat iron steak yesterday and searched for a recipe to cook it. I usually grill my steaks but I may try his fry method instead. It looks so good and tender. Sorry to hear about Steve's passing. My condolences Shelia.
Thank you!🥰
Hello from East Tennesee! My partner made this steak last night and it was the best steak dinner ever. We love flat iron and have them often, but this was the best one...hands down. I love that he continues to inspire and bring joy to people. It is such a beautiful way to celebrate his life ❤
That is awesome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much for this video! Just made a flat iron steak and it by far is the best looking one I’ve done! I’m really sorry to hear Steve past but am glad he shared this with us!
Fantastic! So glad you used this recipe!😋👌 shotgunred.com
I love this guy. Just some solid home grown recipes.
Glad you like them! shotgunred.com
He mentioned paying 5.99 a pound for this steak (in 2018). I just bought a flat iron today, 2021, for $17.99 a pound!
Tip: A few sprigs of thyme, a couple cloves of garlic and a sprig of rosemary in that butter you added to the pan, gives it a wonderful flavor!
Four years ago Kroger had them buy one get one free! $7.99 PER POUND! I have not found Flat Iron steaks at Kroger often in the past year and when I do they are $12.99. But yea, flat iron steak can be very tender and arguably the best flavor.
Try a Chuck Tender steak, and try to get it thick cut.
You are killing me! I must try this, if I can find one at this pandemic we are in! Thank you guys!
Thanks Carol for being a subscriber
Steve's Cooking method is the best. Works great on all cuts.Sorry to hear about Steve. God rest his soul.I'll never forget him.Great guy!!!

Wow, thank you! Steve passed away Dec 2018 😢
Had a flank iron steak in the fridge for a week.... never had this cut before. Cannot wait to try it soon. Hopefully tonight.
Yummy gonna cook this. Thank you x
You’re welcome 😊
Came across video by by accident when I was looking for something else. So glad I did. I will definitely be trying his "Flat Iron" steak recipe. Really looked good. I would have to get a least (2) that weigh at least 2 to 2 1/2 pound each. My gandson who will soon be 9 years old can eat at least a 1/2 pound, along with at least 1/2 pound of famous sauted mushrooms. I use Cabernet Sabranon (red wine) and butter. RICKEY, WARNER ROBINS, GA
Thanks!
Your welcome!😃👌
Wow I can’t wait To make that steak tomorrow, I’m loving the mushroom sauce. 👍❤️
Sounds great Judithla ! :) Thank you for watching!!! :)

It's a chuck steak with a more "romantic" name.
PERFECT!
Thanks David! shotgunred.com 😋👍
Thank you for this tutorial! I’m just learning to cook (much, much too late in life) and this was perfect.
Glad it was helpful!
@@CookingwithShotgunRed I cooked up my flat iron steak according to your video. My first time making it (or any steak). I ended up with a tasty steak. I think I cooked it on high for too long BUT it still wasn't greatly overcooked - just well done (where as I like it more medium - I'll know better next time). It was good and now I know i can cook it! Bonus: steak dinners for four nights! Thank you!
I just saw in the comments about his passing Please accept my condolences.
I'm making this tomorrow. I can't wait.
Let us know how you like it!
It's adorable the way he loved you, Mrs. Shelia
Thank you! :)
Sorry for your loss Sheila. He had a wonderful personality.
My hubby loves flat iron steak when we go to one certain restaurant. I'm going to try this. Thanks.
Hope you enjoy
It’s 2023 on May 15th, and I just learned Steve Hall Sr. passed away. 😢 I recently started watching Steve and his recipes are so down to earth real, nothing fancy nor weird. But his coleslaw dressing recipe is off the charts great! Ms. Sheila my condolences and to his beloved family. Wish I’d known about him sooner and when he was alive very passionate about his cooking. God bless you and Steve’s family.🌹
Thanks for watching and you’re sweet condolences. When Steve passed he had made 307 of these recipes. He was down to earth for sure.
