  • There’s new evidence that Sinotruk, a Chinese truck manufacturer partly owned by a Volkswagen subsidiary has done business with the military in Myanmar, which is accused of human rights abuses and sanctioned by the EU and US. Deutsche Welle speaks with Savanna Slaughter, the author of the report about the evidence, what it shows and what it means for efforts to scrutinize global supply chains and investments.

    Traton responded to a request for comment after the production of this video. Their full statement reads:
    “We consider Sinotruk a financial investment with a capital share of 25 percent. Traton has no operational influence on their business activities. Please understand that for this reason we are unable to comment on Sinotruk’s business activities. You would need to contact Sinotruk directly.”

    I am from Myanmar and I am deeply angry hearing that this abysmal project is being revived.
    Myanmar is already a war torn state under the oppressive regime led by Min Aung Hlaing.
    We have famines, power shortages, mass murders and air strikes on civilian settlements.
    The main reason the junta is reviving this project is because China has promised to give junta back a special economic zone they have lost to rebel forces.
    This project will bring devastating ramifications to the environment as well as destroy Myanmar's economy even more.
    Sadly, Myanmar has already become unliveable as 80% of the country now receive little to no electricity, and young men like me are being forced to join the military.
    All my friends have left the country already and I too will leave soon. But, I still want to see my country thriving beautifully one day.

      I see but have you considered this ---> 💸💰💸
      Germany is following the path of money first, ethics is maybe 3th or 4th place.
      Germany still buys Russian gas, but from Kazakhstan or other country's like India that mix it into their gas.
      So do a lot of European Country's btw.

    • @kinngrimm
      @kinngrimm Před 22 dny

      @@CrispyRichter So what can germany do about it when others mix russian gas into theirs and then sell it? Germany and europe has to pay more for gas now which seems not detered, but helped russian gas exports to some extant, not in quantity but in price per liter. Should german now also not buy from those other nations? What do you think the public outcry would then be, not just in germany but everywhere.
      I do agree that germany should look into VWs handling of this situation, but lets not mix up these two stories like the gas as you claim was mixed.
