    I just found all these videos a couple days ago and binge watched them all. I'm working on some recumbent bikes in 1/16" mild steel square tubing at the moment, but I'm considering building myself a track bike after I get them built and have had a bit more practice with the welder. I really like the way you've included the whole process, including mistakes. It'll probably help me a ton. So, thanks. :)

    TX for sharing your experience again. I realised that what makes your series of videos so nice is that you share your feelings together with your learning curve whithout hiding your errors. This gives me the courage on moments where things fail for the n'th time and I have to continue however. Tx Steve

    dig the video. a couple suggestions, when checking your alignment, make sure you check that the dropouts are aligned with the center axis of the frame as well as the vertical axis. i use a large machinist square for this purpose. also, i have a set of Park dropout tools to get the dropouts aligned with each other. when doing track ends check this with the dropout tools slammed all the way forward in the slots as well as as far back in the slots as you can. for welding i use a large #14 welding cup with a diffuser from ToxicFab that allows your tungsten to stick out much further so you can get into tight places.

    hey man im a bike builder myself and i had the same problem with keyholing as you did. what really helps is to focus your arc onto the thicker piece of metal, in this case the bottom bracket, to get the puddle started and then move onto the thinner piece to complete the tack. it should help with keyholing and it will stop parts from warping as much in free moving areas. nice work though love the channel

  • @Gainfulwahwah
    @Gainfulwahwah Před 5 lety

    That´s not bad at all what you are doing. The heat distribution on the tube looks ok, but there is much room for improvement to get to a master level. You can distinguish by the colors of the weld if it won´t stress the material in bad manner. If you can get it to a 1mm redstrip with a bit of blue you reached the master level ;). Don´t know if your chainstay flat metal stuff is a good idea cause your frame will flex offcenter, causing much stress on the flat/vertical stiffer side.

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  Před 8 lety

      +Benediect Santos good observation! It's a cross between a track bike and a fixed gear freestyle bike. I'm building it to have fun on my daily commute. I'm not a good freestyle rider by any stretch of imagination but I do enjoy simple tricks to make the ride fun. I really like the distance between pedals on track cranks so I kept track cranks. Also I'm short so my wheels are 24". I wanted decent stand over clearance for a person my height. I'm 5,2. So when I fail a trick, I can keep my nuts off the top tube.

    Do you more around a lot making the welds to make it not move while not in the fixture?
    Also, how much do you purge? When I started to purge I had some problems not having enough coverage, but turning up the amount made it impossible to weld since the gas from the inside would actually disturb welding the outside, almost like when you notice that you forgot to turn on the gas bottle ehehehe..

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  Před 5 lety

      Yeah its a balancing act to get the purge just right. This particular frame was purged. If coverage isn't good its possible air pockets are inside the tubes. Argon is heavier than air so it settle to bottom of tube. I like to turn the frame around and up and down a few times while its purging to get all the air out. Good luck!

    Another GREAT VID, Steve!! My palms were sweating watching you weld the chainstay/BB shell!! What diameter filler are you using? I have experimented with .045 and .035 diameter fillers for thin material. The smaller filler melts quicker in a small puddle, but I still find myself blowing holes from time to time.
    The test fit with the wheel and the cranks and then the seat stays was AWESOME!! Can't wait to see you riding the finished product.
    I also was not feeling the plate section for the right chainstay, but now I feel like that's what makes this frame totally yours. No one else is going to have a frame just like this one.

    I can't be totally sure, since I'm pretty new to tig welding myself, but I think you might be going a little light on the pedal when tacking? I haven't welded on tubing quite that thin, but I noticed when I've been playing with 16Ga stainless that I'm more likely to melt through when I sit for a couple seconds at low current waiting for a puddle than when I give it a ton of current and get them fused quickly.

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  Před 8 lety

      You're right. I was going to light. A burst of heat is what's needed to draw the molten metal into the gap. Going light makes the steel shrink back rather than flow forward. Thanks for watching!

    • @Rexxis-Arcturus
      @Rexxis-Arcturus Před 8 lety

      When tacking thick stuff to thin stuff, gotta hold the heat on the thick material and allow it to almost wick onto the thin stuff. Keep it up fellas!

    Why do you attach the green tube? 5:20

    • @PithyBikes
      @PithyBikes  Před 7 lety

      Green tube feeds argon (shielding gas) into the tube. The welding torch expels argon at the tip so it shields the surface but it doesn't shield the other side (or inside the bicycle tube). Thanks for watching!

      You might also consider not dropping your electrode out so far and going to a smaller cup. I know that you have to drop the electrode a little lower for a fillet, but the less exposed electrode the better.
