    With your comment on how Toriyama created the building blocks of shounen that are used today, I will say that Toriyama though didn't exist in a vacuum at the time, there at the same time were other mangaka putting their own series out that future authors would have read too. You have for example Hirohiko Araki who was writing Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Takehiko Inoue who was writing Slam Dunk, Yoshihiro Togashi who was writing Yu Yu Hakusho, Rumiko Takahashi who was writing Ranma 1/2, Nobuhiro Watsuki who was writing Rurouni Kenshin -the real GOAT of shounen-, Buronson and Tetsuo Hara who were writing Fist of the North Star, George Morikawa who was writing Hajime no Ippo, and Katsuhiro Otomo who was writing AKIRA.

      Yes that is true but when your talking about global recognition dragonball is a household name sure other authors are far more better at writing than toriyama but in terms of commodity and mass appeal only a few can match what toriyama's body of work achieved .( ex. ONE PIECE) the stories that you have given are truly subpar compare to the original manga. I have read the original manga, it was really all about the sense of wonder and imaginative aspects of an adventure. Sure some of the old and new materials that are coming out today don't hold up, (maybe-its-aimed-at-a-more-younger-demographic.) but it aint enough a reason why akira toriyama can't be given the title of genius. Sure it can be contested not all of the building block of shonen can be attributed to him but when current manga authors say what inspired them the majority will say Akira Toriyama's Dragoball. When you create something and those who follow you refine the themes and ideas thats how you leave a lasting bright legacy for everyone to follow.

    Also, on the comics side of things you have Invincible, which I would argue is basically what 90's Dragon Ball could have been if Toriyama was a better writer and hadn't been so lazy, and Kondo was a better editor. It is does it in 144 chapters compared to Dragon Ball's 324 chapters. And I'm personally having a hard time trying to see how anybody can argue with any points I would make on it, like the verse of Invincible definitely feels way more lived in than Dragon Ball's verse ever could, all the fights in Invincible feel a lot more dynamic and impactful than Dragon Ball's ever could, and Viltrumites are a lot more fleshed out than Saiyajin are, and at the same time they don't oversaturate the story

    • @lucky_luck5411
      @lucky_luck5411  Před 7 měsíci +8

      Brother the weekly work schedule of a manga artist is brutal to say that toriyama is lazy is uncalled for, i personally think if back then the work schedule during the 80's were much more flexible and have more time toriyama could have executed his ideas better but he was one of the frontline mangas that shonen jump had to offer to make money. Technology also played a role back then, we did'nt have the printing capabilities we have today so schedules were really tight. Missing a deadline was a no no!. If Shueisha could not deliver the manga it will ruin the printing schedule of the printing company, if there is no manga retail stores will lose sales. Please refrain from saying bad things about the character of akira toriyama, we don't know the exact reasons why things happen.

    • @lucky_luck5411
      @lucky_luck5411  Před 7 měsíci +7

      Invincible is a monthly comicbook series it has a writer , a penciler, an inker and a colorist 4 separate people working on one comicbook. Akira toriyama had to write,sketch and ink dragon ball, he even had to create color pages, sure you can argue he has assistants on creating the manga but to be able to create atleast a 25 page comicbook in a week with a coherent story is asking too much, that was all analog no digital coloring, can you imagine the mental load that puts on akira toriyama. Sure Invincible story is more solid and tight but your talking about decades of superhero writing refinemanship. If your going to say akira toriyama is lazy well im just going to say that compared to robert kirkman who keeps getting sued by his co-creators by denying them royalties from the tv show, im going with akira toriyama for the win.

  • @Kakaragi
    @Kakaragi Před 7 měsíci +2

    I'm sorry but Toriyama is not a genius, if anything he's more of a bloke who can draw well, who at the worst of times is a mindless lemming, you just have to look at his interviews in Daizenshuu 2 around the Cell arc.
    In fact just the Cell arc in general just reveals his folly as a writer, I might recommend watching Plague's Gohan and Time Travel videos, but I think it would be good if I pick apart Cell himself here with a comment where I debunked him being a good villain:
    "He actually has a backstory and a reason to be evil."_
    _Really? He has no conflicts or connections, his wants and fears are tied to wanting perfection, which really I don't really understand as it's not like he will die if he doesn't become "perfect"; his motive of "I want perfection because a computer told me to" is so stupid that he might as well not have a motive; and the plot serves his agency! And he might as well have no motive or agency upon obtaining perfection. You see where I'm getting at? Cell isn't a character, he's a plot device, a marketing tool, a punching bag for the characters to measure how much they matter to the plot or just get a moment in the limelight to just seem cool, a corporate character meant to advertise for toy sales, and his regeneration just works serves to keep him in the plot until the plot says it's time for him to die._
    "He had to work for his transformations."
    _I totally disagree with this, if Freeza had the same writing as Cell everyone would die! Because the plot literally serves Freeza the Dragon Balls on a silver platter and he doesn't need to know Namekian to speak to Porunga! And you know, what exactly makes Cell "Perfect" by absorbing #17 and #18, all he does is get stronger and faster which isn't interesting, he did have the forcefield from #17, but he only uses it once and never again, and that's it. That's not to mention that Cell's designs upon absorbing don't really scream to me that he's attained some sense of perfection, outside of his Imperfect form, Cell is just not interesting to look at. And you know his regeneration is pretty underutilized all things considered, think of the gory, grisly, gruesome, body horror fun you could have with it; Cell can reheal himself from it anyway so what's stopping Toriyama from doing it?
    My main problem is that the plot serves Cell, whatever Cell says, that's where the plot goes. That's why he exposites to Piccolo about what he is why he's in the plot thinking that Piccolo can't fight, even though he knows Piccolo can regenerate; that's why he's so strong that he overpowers Piccolo and #17 and #16 and abosrobs #17; that's why he gets Vegeta to let him absorb #18 and obtain Perfection; that's why when Cell uses the Cell Jr.s inorder to get Gohan's anger out._
    "He lost in the same way he mocked Vegeta, ironically."
    _I really find the final fight between Gohan and Cell to be really anticlimatic considering it's a one sided beat down for Cell's side, then a one sided beat down for Gohan's side, Cell then explodes, Cell comes back and breaks Gohan's arm, then they go into a beam clash where Gohan, with Vegeta's assistance, wins in just one chapter. Are you kidding me?! SSJ Goku vs Full Power Freeza took seven chapters to complete in comparison!
    This is not mentioning that Gohan barely plays a major role in arc itself which really and it doesn't exactly feel that he deserves the final fight. If I had my own pick for who should've gotten the final fight, I would've picked Trunks! He's the one who started the arc off after all, so let him be the one who finishes it! And he actually has his own personal motive and agency at stake too.
    And you know why even mention Vegeta, he's badly written too! For example, around the beginning of the arc Bulma suggests to try finding Dr. Gero's lab to stop the threat before it even happens in the future, and then Vegeta threatens to kill anyone who tried that which causes everyone to fall in and agree to not to find Dr. Gero's lab, with no question. You see what I mean, this is literally a plot device does which is why I call Vegeta one, that's not to mention that Vegeta' doesn't really have a motive or agency other than "Saiya-jin Pride". A plot device by definition is anything that moves a story forward, whether that's for the benefit or detriment of it. And in this case it's for the detriment, Goku's literally the strongest person in the room at that moment, which pretty much should make anything that Vegeta says null and void by default unless he wants to get punched in the face and through a mountain. Should I also mention that it is out of character for Goku to do this? Sure, he has let bad guys go before ~~we don't talk about Freeza~~ but that's not sans them being defeated and he gives his own reasoning for doing so, whether that's good or bad reasoning I'll leave that to your interpretation, but here they don't even know of the threat. It would've been more interesting if there are a splinter in the group between those who wanted to find Dr. Gero's lab and those who wanted to train and fight the Androids_
    5. His comeback as Super Perfect Cell felt like an actual threat.
    _Let me quote PlagueofGripes: Now you can project whatever you want to the scene or make whatever assumptions you need to in order for it to have more weight, but on its own merit it’s a bad scene, the pacing is completely off, nothing that would drive the scene has been established on screen with consistent theming, there’s just not enough context to warrant Gohan’s reaction, again I chalk this up to Toriyama’s writing and the editorial changes combined with a long history of Gohan having little character presence. All these pacing and theming issues persist until the end, the fight again becomes one-sided in Gohan’s favor, this is fine you’ll say cathartic type of scene, but it also has no tension for obvious reasons. Realizing this Toriyama writes the Goku sacrifice, again, noting how unsatisfying of an ending this would be, Cell miraculously comes back from a single cell. This somehow also zenkai-s him along with fully healing him despite the fact that all his other regenerations never did any such thing, excuses and headcanon aside, narratively this is only to ensure he’s now strong enough to pose a threat, that’s the only real reason why this actually happens. Remember though, there was never a real fight, Gohan this entire time never taken any damage, and so we get the Vegeta scene, Gohan is more than strong and healthy enough to deflect or negate this hit, but takes an intense amount of damage from what it looks like a fairly basic attack, again the only reason why this scene occurs is because it is a lazy writing shortcut, it’s done to give Gohan a bum arm and some last minute battle damage to make a final struggle look somewhat convincing. I reiterate this hastily thrown together series of chapters are trying to emotionally manipulate you it did not reach this point organically, it could not be more clear that Toriyama is in a panic and throwing excuses into every element of the fight to try and manufacture two visual set pieces, and again I’m not dumping on Gohan the character the writing here is doing a disservice so let’s stop…_
    "He dies in an epic beam clash."
    _Again, I find Gohan vs Cell to be anti-climatic, along with that beam clash ending in just one chapter_
    "He was a rare villain that fought the other antagonists."
    _Yeah and they ended up being curbstomps, and you know the villains of the Cell arc suck anyway. They don't really feel all that threatening or intimidating at all! And any for any moments where they do feel that way, such as Dr. Gero vaporizing an island or Cell drinking people, that's all that they are, moments, and you just forget about them as soon as you see them continue reading. I'm sorry Trunks, but I just can't believe that some teenagers having fun would bring your future to shit, and that's not mentioning that you said they were #19 and #20, not #17 and #18. Of course the absorbtion mechanic of Gero and #20 is an interesting mechanic to put the characters' chi/ki against them, it's just that it gets easily countered with no way for the villains to fight back and they're both dead wuthin 14 chapters. And I don't care for #17 and #18 either because we don't really get to know them as characters, if anything they're just turned into MacGuffins for Cell and nothing else. And I can't stan for Kuririn having a crush on #18 for how undercooked her character and their relationship are. Another thing that makes their threat fall flat is that, we're just told that they're stronger and faster, which is really boring. Dragon Ball is simply all about becoming faster and stronger, what exactly makes the ceiling that the villains are in so unattainable?! And this is not even taking the Chamber of Spirit and Time into account which is basically a free ticket to surpassing anyone._
    "First villain with copy attacks, and his made sense (Morro is a lame clone of him.)"
    _Attacks that he barely uses, like why didn't he use the Kaioken instead of the kamehameha for example_
    And as of recent Dragon Ball, Toriyama's pretty much proven himself to be a hack in terms of creativity and storytelling, like instead of having us trying to explore the other universes we instead get more of the same story format from the original manga of the next strong guy that everyone needs to take down four more times, with only the Broly movie really working.

      Brother your looking at his body of work at a very technical perspective sure his work today won't be as good as it was during the 80's but the building blocks and foundation of a shonen storytelling he created are use by all manga artist today. Akira toriyama is like 60+, age affects creativity. All of the things that the current battle mangas have they owe to him. If you can take your art to other forms of media, make business and merchandise thats a win, being a creative and having to rely only on your art for your finances is astronomically hard but he showed everyone that it can be done. Dragonball gave people something in common we might not be of the same country but dragon ball sure made me connect more with people now if that aint genius i don't know what it is..?

      Akira toriyama's golden years was during the 80's his first successful manga was dr.slump a gag manga that does'nt need to have a good story structure to work. Basically he can just throw any idea he can think of, but hokuto no ken came out so he needed to adapt to the current market and taste of the buying public. so he created dragonball to differentiate his work to the bloody violence of hokuto no ken, he needed to make a manga that children can read but also retain that dr.slump flavor, there are certain types of rules in place on what you can depict in a shonen jump manga, that's another thing he needed to consider because japanese society at that time is not very open to what we tolerate today. As an artist you have to know business, you must not create a new product that could alienate your current fans that support you. To be able to create new stuff and gain more people to buy-in on your art while retaining and satisfying your fanbase is the height of a successful artist.

      The true genius is creativity isn’t making a story super complex or coherent, it’s sometimes just making your story fun.
      Dragon ball is simply a Japanese cartoon, one especially made for kids and their families to watch cool fights and funny characters. There’s a lot of anime that focus towards a older audience like hxh and stuff like that, but if you’re a Japanese kid watching a random episode of dragon ball on the tv, dragon ball is meant to be somewhat repetitive because all episodes have the same exact crazy feel to their story, and that fight they’re all really waiting for.
