Television in the UK has a 9pm "watershed"
At 9pm you can have mild-to-moderate swearing, and after 10pm you can pretty much say anything you want
Certain channels are more cautious and the BBC will tend censor the most offensive language such as the C-word, but this is a Channel 4 show who tend to push the envelope more when it comes to swearing

Eraser/rubber - it's only a rubber if it's a piece of rubber (or something like it) used to rub out pencil strokes. If it's a thingy used for, say a blackboard or a whiteboard, then it's an eraser.

Yeah... I was an exchange student at a high school in Kansas when I raised my voice and asked if "anybody had a rubber I could borrow", during a history test at last school period on a Friday, stressing that I "really needed it bad!"
The spontaneous shock and laughter around me made me realize I, just perhaps, had said something I shouldn't have.
I was sure the teacher was about to send me to the principals office, but he stopped and asked what I meant.
When I explained it was "that thing to correct errors with", he smiled and said "no, rubber is more intended to prevent errors, here we call what you need an eraser. You just asked for a condom".
    When you're 17, that's a lesson you never forget 😉

For the physical object that you rub over pencil, we would definitely call a rubber. When it is electronic, maybe we're more likely to say eraser.

When Jimmy said "Don't say the Angry Bird is quite old" to Micky, he was referencing that Mel B had been grumpy all through the recording of the show and was being no fun, he was saying "Don't say the angry bird (woman) is old when you're sat next to Mel" as a joke, like he was saying Mel was old and angry.
Mel B was/is a judge on Americas Got Talent or one of those garbage shows, so you may have seen her on TV somewhere, idk.

They use both terms (eraser and rubber). Same as in Australia and New Zealand, although they more typically say 'rubber'.

  • @micko11154
    @micko11154 Před rokem +3

A 'rubber' is called a rubber because it's made of rubber and you rub it on the pencil marks, letters etc. In this show on a digital screen, a 'rubber' would not work, so, it is obviously an eraser. 😁
    Cheers!

Some live shows have teleprompters, some use cue cards, most don't use anything. It depends fully on the show. There is a trick that not many know about teleprompters: they are far away... The camera and the teleprompter can be several meters away from the newscaster. There are two reasons for it. The closer the camera is, the more it distorts. If it is two inches from your nose, it can not see your ears... Your face becomes distorted, it bulges outwards. But if the camera is further away but zoomed in, it can see the sides of your head and it flattens your face to be more natural (very, VERY far zooms can look unnatural but that is tens of meters/yards). In real life you got two eyes that mitigate with this problem but camera has only one "eye".
When it comes to the teleprompters... if it is far away we can not see the person reading it, their eyes do not move a lot from side to side.
So they both are placed far away, and this requires expensive optics and VERY stable platform.. That is why the TV cameras are so huge and why they are placed on very heavy platforms. If they were light then the long distance would case the picture to shake from the tiniest interferences, like.. just someone walking near the camera.. But, it is also good idea for everyone who uses a camera to try to place it as far away as possible and then optically zoom in. For reaction content... it might be a good idea to use large display but further away so the eyes don't have to dart around, but that could also be a bit jarring to have "dead eyes", i don't know. When i was in school for this, we didn't have a thing called reaction channels.. or podcast.. or youtubers like we do now..

HEY. YOU GOT A BOTTLE !! ABOUT TIME !!
If it's the thing you hold in your fingers it's called a rubber. If it's on a computer screen it's an eraser .
" Angry or Flappy Bird " !? What are they ?
In Micky's act he mentions the fact that he used to be a bit of a " tea leaf " ( thief ).
After 9 pm ( the watershed) you can pretty much say what you want .

  • @MetalMonkey

We do call erasers...rubbers but some also call condoms rubbers....context is key. A rubber would be to rub out pencil and is made of rubber, but they are writing electronically so you would erase or delete it.
7:47 (Jimmy) Don't say the angry bird is quite old............In the UK Bird is slang for woman/girlfriend.
10:50 There's a music round for Mel B (She was a Spice Girl in case you didn't know) and there's no Petty Theft round for Micky, he grew up in a rough area.....why do i think you still don't understand?!
13:30 In 1984 Band Aid had a charity single called Do They Know It's Christmas and Bono (U2) sang the lyric "Well tonight thank god it's them instead of you" that lyric was changed for the re-release/updated version in the 2000's. That's what the question was about, what was that lyric changed to.
That song was a year before USA for Africa - We Are the World. They're both the same format, multiple famous singers in one song.
This is not a prime time show........I think it's from 10pm to 12am once a year at the end of December. I haven't seen it for years because i haven't got tv channels.
I feel like i'm explaining to a 5yo but maybe that's what you need because you're still learning about British/Irish stuff
