Part 1 of 3 Interpol - live on 'Morning Becomes Eclectic' - KCRW Studios - Feb 19 2003 Setlist: 1. NYC 2. Roland 3. Specialist - Interview 4. Say Hello to the Angels 5. The New 6. Obstacle 2
From various interviews I watched and heard. I can say that Carlos and Paul struggled to get along well in studio. Also, touring and Interpol as a whole didn't fullfilled Carlos' life. Daniel, Sam, Paul and Carlos they all went to group therapy because of their problems inside the band. By the time the Interpol (2010) record came out Carlos just felt he couldn't handle it more and said to the rest "this is it guys" and left the current therapy session leaving nothing, but his bass and synth parts to be used in the record, which he claimed it was going to be the "Kid A" of Interpol's Discography. Paul decided later to rewrite the record and ignore almost the entirety of Carlos' recordings. Man that's a sad story...
I remember when they kicked him out, on their forums someone photoshopped a picture of them on MTV2 Subterranean to cover him up with a giant potted plant he was originally standing next to lmao I really miss early '00s message board culture. I think his name was Eric?
Interpol peaked very early huh. Paul's voice was great here, and Carlos was incredible and looked so into it. especially in part 3 when they play hello to the angels.
I remember I saw an interview not too long ago with Paul and he said Carlos is a musical genius and would basically be a big influence on all the songs as far as the structure and chord progressions. He also said he was a big asshole but they sacrificed dealing with that for a while just because he was such a great musician but obviously that took its toll and now he's gone.
Paul forgot to check his panty wardrobe at JFK Airport. Typical ex pat. Fucking broke to the US, makes it big in NYC with Interpol, & forgot to take his thumb out of his ass. I lived in the East Village & met Carlos many times while doing his DJ gigs. Like every talented artist, arrogant, but not an asshole. Success was pretty fast for Interpol, touring take it's toll, alcohol, good drugs, hot lady's, & you got no more bright lights, in the city that never sleeps.. Cheers..
Fuck you know when you go back to one of your old bands and not only brings back specific memories, but also how you felt at a certain point in time. It just happened. 😊 😔 😩😃
oh I know I was thinking about how the bassline to NYC almost felt like a lullaby to me back in high school how many times I drifted off late at night to this album playing over my headphones
No matter what anybody says, this band was never the same, as good as it was without Carlos. The others are very creative and talented, definitely, but Carlos completed them as a whole, their best work was with him, hands down.
Takes me back to 2003 when I listened this album for the first and special time. After that nothing will were and be the same without Interpol. I really enjoy the music of this guys
OMG! This was one of the first things I listened to by Interpol, even before I listened to their album. I watched it over and over and it really got me into them. Thank you for uploading!
Can someone explain to me why Carlos left? Apparently he grew sick of playing bass? It makes no sense to me. He was so at one with that instrument. His playing was always so appropriate. Never too much, never too little. That's a real musician, right there.
dradfromthebu Paul always remarks in interviews, that during elpintor sessions he had no clue, how his part (vocals and guitar) might look like ... until the moment he brought a bass and worked out some basslines. How come, that Daniel didn´t work them out for elpintor as well? Carlos´s contribution on the former albums must have been much more relevant than just styling the already worked out parts a little bit. (imho)
dradfromthebu Daniel may have written a few, but Carlos wrote the vast majority of Interpol's basslines. Saying he only 'stylized' them is entirely untrue and hugely downplays his contributions to the band.....not sure where that myth comes from. And Carlos joined the band as the bass player, it's not like he was the last friend to show up for practice and got stuck on it. I get the vibe that initially playing bass was fine, but if you look at the 3rd and 4th records he was more interested in orchestration and seemed bored with bass. Not to be a dick, but saying Carlos was basically a session play with flair is wrong.
Alex Kemp I'll admit that while I can't remember or find the source that was claiming Daniel wrote most of the basslines, I believed it and have that view also based off of Paul's interview (I'm pretty sure it was a recent El Pintor one) where he talks about the original writing process of the band. He says Daniel basically has the song structures and chord progressions sorted out, and presents them to the band while they all together work out the instrumentation and Paul writes lyrics and works out the vocal melodies. What I mean by Daniel writing most of the basslines is... if what Paul's saying is true, the basslines had to have already had a rough sketch if the songs truly had a layout before bringing them to the band. Think of a lot of the songs off the first two records where the guitars are very sparse or droning. Something like Evil. I doubt Daniel brought the songs to the band simply as single note, repetitive guitar parts. The bass keeps the "progression" in most of the songs. I believe he had rough sketches of the basslines in order to write the guitar parts, and Carlos 'wrote' and stylized them to fit the songs. Again... just my take based off of what the band says about Daniel's importance to the songwriting process. I just think it's a little odd also that people constantly cite Carlos as the most talented member of the band, and that things will never be the same since he's gone. Daniel has always been the driving force behind this band. It's his band, he brought everyone together, and he had the knowledge of the music business to make them a success. Carlos really fucked them over by quitting, and I would understand and respect his personal decision to leave if it wasn't for the assholish behavior he exhibited quite often during interviews. I'm thinking about one I saw where he spent most of the interview trying to be the center of attention after banging his knee on a table...
I know what interviews you're talking about and Daniel bringing a rudimentary chord progression or riff to Paul, Carlos, and Sam shouldn't translate to Daniel writing all Interpol songs and the rest of the guys just playing or slightly building off what he presented. Of course, a given set of chords has a matching key or maybe an implied rhythm that Carlos may have to account for, but that doesn't mean he had any less of a part in writing his bass parts or the songs more generally. Plus, Paul has said in numerous interviews that Carlos' basslines were often the foundation of his vocal melodies and guitar parts. Even if some of Daniel's initial sketches had rough basslines, given what Carlos decided to do with them, it's misleading to say Daniel wrote them and Carlos merely spruced them up. Conveniently you cite Evil, which was one of the few basslines Daniel is credited with. I'm not sure why that would make you think that all songs underwent the same process, though. And Carlos didn't fuck them over at all, if anything he did all involved a favour. If you don't want to be somewhere, leave. They're all adults who lead their own lives, and Carlos chose to leave to pursue other things. Better than staying and half assing it. Do we have too much time on our hands to be arguing about this? Probably.
Hey man, you are pretty versed on Interpol. I have to believe what you are saying, because your reply is well balanced. I missed almost the whole 90s when it comes to music, and I think I know a thing or two, about a thing or two. I lucked up on Interpol while channel surfing on CZcams. I was impressed by their ability to play live and sound good doing it. I turned 58 last year and I'm still playing catch up on a myriad of bands who are close to as brilliant as Interpol. I'm aware that they signed a contract in 2002 with the independent label "Matador Records", but they've been honing their skills since the late 90s, so I can mark them off of my list of awesome 90s bands pursuit. An African American who knows real talent when see's it. peace
makes me wish sometimes for a Thanos snap of the fingers so we all go back to 2003 and can be the first folks to buy their records and get show tickets.....not sure if we would somehow remember to do this but am not a MCU expert on this

Carlos es definitivamente mi bajista favorito, impresionante.
not only is his bass playing bad ass but the style and way he presents himself is fucking bad ass. its dark. we miss carlos!
I love seeing early Interpol performances because you always see Carlos play so passionately. Man what happened?

Probably the best performance of Specialist that I've seen.
Ahhhhh yes, the best
That keyboardist is the best backing vocalist I've heard with Interpol

Hard to argue against that.
Close second to Radiohead

They borrowed A LOT from The Sound & The Chameleons.
Man, 20 years ago. I love how most of the comments in here are about Carlos.
the audio on this holds up surprisingly well for its age!! i love the openness especially on roland i think this beats the 2012 remaster for me omg

What an era of Interpol, peaked so early with the first two albums - utter brilliance
Man this is just good music... Nothing complicated, just simple and in your face! Definitely one of the best bands out there
Estos vídeos son oro. qué talento tienen.
He ido a muchos conciertos pero después de escuchar a interpol en vivo puedo decir que son de lo mejor. Son únicos.

I don't like my clothes anymore
We're spending time and money yeah you're colder than yourself
Now we're moving now we?re taking control

I know what my heart is for
You reach out for blanket I say girl you've got something
I love how you wear it
Now we're spending time and money yeah you're colder than yourself
Now we're moving now we're taking control
Love will get you down
My love's a laboratory
I set all my pets free
So baby you should sleep with me
I make trips to the bathroom
Yeah my friends all have true grit
I am speckled like a leopard
Put a lid on Shirley Temple
Yeah you make sleek kills
Yeah you travel you travel
You park me in your buick
You sing songs into my lips
Well I am speckled like a leopard
Just like a leopard
Trust will get you down
I love the way
You put me in the big house
I love the way
You put me in the big house
If I get there early will it be the right time
Our heaven is just waiting so put your hand into mine
If I get too surly will you take that in stride
Our boat is just there waiting so put your little hand in mine
And speak when you're spoken of
Catch up on your sleep girl
When you wear that body glove
You're acting on initiative
And you're spelling out your love
You shouldn't be alone in there
You could be above ground
All I want is to be the very best for you
All I want is to be the very best for you
Oh this time
There'll be no life of crime
Don't rain on me tonight
Circle around me now baby it'll be ok
Cause we all go downtown sometimes
Somehow baby we'll beat this mess
It's the time fuck the surface to meet the specialist
Time away from me
Will get you down
I love the way you put me in the big house
I love the way you put me in the big house
If I get there early will it be the right time
Our heaven is just waiting is just waiting
So put your hand into mine
If I get too surly will you take that in stride
Our boat is just there waiting
So put your little hand in mine
And speak when you're spoken of
Catch up on your sleep
When you wear that body clock
You're acting on initiative
And you're spelling out your love
You shouldn't be alone in there
You could be above ground
If you're frustrated then go
If you're frustrated then go
Honey bee, we should be through with this,
Your packaged eyes, your vicious lips
You could be young, but you're out of touch
If this loves been done, then what's your rush?
